Shell Beach bite getting better every day

Duck food is in abundance this year, meaning coastal hunters will have to do more scouting to determine exactly where the birds are holding.

Anybody fishing with the king, Captain Frank Moore (504-887-4960) lately has found that Biloxi Marsh, Stump Lagoon and Muscle Bay are absolutely full of redfish and trout right now. In fact, one recent trip produced 160 trout, 20 reds, 5 puppy drum and a couple sheepshead between two boats.

“The fishing is really good at the beach right now,” said Moore. “Despite it being breezy at the beach the last few days, we’ve still been able to stay on the bite even with the water being high.”

Moore has pinpointed that the trout and redfish are holding in the same areas. However, it’s been pretty obvious to him that, even though they’re in the same general area, the trout and redfish aren’t really hanging out together.

“I’m fishing moving water away from the shore for the trout and drains and small coves on the windward side for the reds,” he explained. For the trout, we’re using live shrimp; for the reds, we’re using dead shrimp. But we’re fishing both one to three feet under a cork depending on the area and what I’m trying to catch.”

Moore pointed out that October and November always seem to be the best months for fall fishing around Shell Beach, and he doesn’t see any reason for this fast action to slow down anytime soon.

“And Campo’s marina is open with fuel, live bait, ice and some newly improved back-down ramps,” Moore concluded. “They always give you a generous count on your live bait, and it’s quick and easy launching there with helpful advice from the Campo’s crew.”
