Portion of western Terrebonne marshes reopen at 6 p.m., state offshore waters close immediately

A large swath of the Terrebonne Parish marshes that were closed to all fishing because of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill will reopen today (May 26) at 6 p.m., but the closure of state offshore waters between the eastern shore of Marsh Island and Freshwater Bayou was reinstated effective just before 5 p.m., the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced.

The latest reopening includes inshore waters west of Bayou Grand Caillou’s eastern shore.

The waters were closed May 22 in response to a number of reports of oil in the area, but to date no oil has been found.

The waters from Marsh Island’s South Point at 91 degrees 45 minutes 48 seconds west longitude west to the eastern shore of Freshwater Bayou at 92 degrees 18 minutes 27 seconds west longitude were closed after confirmed reports of oil, the LDWF reported.

These actions are in keeping with the procedure laid out by LDWF Secretary Robert Barham in an interview with LouisianaSportsman.com.

The agency also reported that shrimping season will open at 6 a.m. May 31 in a portion of Zone 1 to include:

· Pass Manchac east of the railway bridge
· Lake Pontchartrain
· Rigolets Pass
· Chef Menteur Pass
· Lake Borgne
· The portion of Mississippi Sound north of the Biloxi Marsh and west of 89 degrees 11 minutes 15.5 seconds west longitude at Isle au Pitre.
