Geohagan Canal stacking up with winter reds

After joking that he might rather stay home and go hunting, Capt. Eric Dumas with Living a Dream Guide Service (985.705.1244) says there’s actually some pretty good fishing in the Pontchartrain basin this month – as long as you temper your expectations.

“If you like catching a bunch of reds, this is the time of year to do it in all your dead-end canals,” Dumas said. “Also the cuts over in the marsh will hold reds. As long as you’ve got some moving water, the cuts will be pretty good.”

Dumas pointed out places like Geohagan Canal right next to the Rigolets Marina as being one of the best and most popular places to fish. Redfish and trout will stack up in this long, straight canal, and its protected nature makes it a wintertime hotspot.

“You can get in there and throw your plastics on the bottom,” Dumas continued. “I like to stick with the Opening Night and Copper Head Bay Chovies, and I just barely crawl them on bottom most days.”

When it’s right, Dumas said he expects to catch as many as 50 redfish and up to 20 trout, although in two entirely different locations. The redfish like to hang along the bank toward the back, while the trout like to stack up in the deeper holes in the canal and in the big, open pond to the east just off the canal.
