The Red River is like an entirely different waterway than it was just two years ago. Here’s how to catch bass there this summer.
A portion of the inside waters between Red Pass and Empire Canal along the western bank of the Mississippi River were reopened to fishing today, but closures moved farther into the Barataria Basin today after oil was found in the Little Lake area, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced.

Reopened are inshore waters from the southern shoreline of Red Pass at 89 degrees, 28 minutes, 13.4 seconds north latitude to the western shoreline of the Empire canal; north along the western Empire Canal shoreline to 29 degrees, 20 minutes, 00 seconds north latitude; west along that parallel to the western shoreline of Grand Bayou; and finally along the western Grand Bayou shoreline.
This area was closed as a precaution, but no oil has been confirmed in the area to date.
In the Barataria Basin, officials closed waters north of 29 degrees 30 minutes 00 seconds north latitude and south of 29 degrees 35 minutes 00 seconds north latitude from 89 degrees 52 minutes west longitude near the western shoreline of Bay Batiste westward to 90 degrees 14 minutes 00 seconds west longitude near the western shoreline of Little Lake.
All other closures remain in place.
