Dehydration a lurking summertime danger

Capt. Jason Shilling with New Orleans Style Fishing Charters cautioned that anglers should not dismiss the heat with a hot-headed attitude that they’ll do anything to catch the fish.

“We get a little warm in Lafitte during July,” he said. “It can get steamy, but the fishing is usually good that time of year. If you want to stay on these fish during the heat of July and August, you’ve got to keep proper hydration in mind.”

Shilling recommended replacing most of the soft drinks in your boat with water and keeping an eye on how much you are sweating.

“People don’t realize that when they quit sweating, they’re already dehydrated,” Shilling explained. “As a charter captain, I’m constantly reminding my customers to drink water. If you don’t have that constant reminder, it’s easy to forget and go too long without water.”
