Clovelly Oil Field offers best of both worlds

The particular area that produced all these limits of speckled trout for Capt. James Wilson is a part of the Clovelly Oil Field. The canal that comes out in the middle of Little Lake is a part of it, but the other part, where we fished, is the south end by Brusle.

“That’s where all the oil field canals are down there,” Wilson said. “This time of year, it’s a good area because you can duck into the canals when it gets cold or when there’s a lot of wind and still catch some trout.”

These canals tend to get better the colder it gets, and they are some of the few canals around Lafitte that have water 6 to 8 feet deep.

“When it gets cold, those canals are a natural spot to go fish because the bait will congregate in that deeper water and the trout follow them in,” Wilson added.

Depending on the weather, Wilson either starts in the backs and works out or starts at the mouths and goes farther out into the bays.

“During cold weather, I like to go to the backs and work my way toward the mouth,” he said. “And during warm weather, I start at the mouth of the canal and work my way back out into the bay.”
