Reader Report: Rescued rod, new kayak lead Triche to 10-pounder

My name is Connor and I’m a 12-year-old living in Madisonville. This is a story about an exciting fishing trip I recently took.

I woke up ready to go fishing in my kayak I have waited all year to buy. I asked my dad and mom if I could, and they said yes! I love to fish and I wanted to try out this rod I found in the middle of the woods.

I gathered all my fishing tackle and my rods, loaded it up on the truck and my dad drove it to the ‘big lake’ in my neighborhood. On the way there, my dad said that there would never be any bass in that pond. Little did he know, he was wrong.

I started fishing and then realized something. I remembered this new spot I have wanted to try for a long time and I never had a chance to go there. It was a cove hidden behind a cutout at the end of the lake. I went to the cove and fished. I thought I would have caught something, but I didn’t. I realized there was much more activity near the end of the cove where the current was.

The right spot

I paddled over there and put my kayak in a corner tucked away near the lily pads. I casted out my bait and waited. I soon after felt a massive tug on my line and let the fish take the bait, but I had no idea it would have been a massive 10-pounder!

I quickly set my hook and then that was when everything broke loose. I fought and reeled in the fish. It fought very hard and bent my whole six-foot rod tip all the way to the surface of the water. It carried me and my kayak across the lake for 10 yards. It was then that the bass took a massive jump out the water. I started to flip out because I had never seen a bass like this before in my life! I reeled it into the surface and this thing took up three-fourths of my kayak. Then just as I went to grab my net, it swam down very hard and almost flipped me and my kayak. I reeled it in and grabbed it with my ‘dip gripper’ and brought it in.

Shaking with excitement

I was shaking so much with the amount of adrenaline rushing through my body. I weighed the fish and it weighed 10 pounds 2 ounces. I texted my neighborhood friends and my dad that this was no joke, I just caught a 10-pound bass!

My dad was back at the house letting me fish and my friends came first and screamed for me to come back towards the pier. I quickly grabbed my paddle and rushed back to shore. My friends were flipping out as they had never seen a fish that big before as well. Then my dad came and I could see the shock and awe on his face. I had to take a lot of pictures, but I didn’t mind.

I was showing off my once in a lifetime rare catch and then I looked at It. This was awesome. I grabbed it and went to the pier. I wanted it to live and grow bigger, so I took one last good look at it and then released my clamp. It quickly swam away.

My dad was so proud of me and said he would get a replica mount. I didn’t realize how rare my catch was. It was an awesome experience that will last me a lifetime.
