Capt. Eric Dumas is a big fan of Deadly Dudley plastic baits. Bay Choveys are his favorite body style, and he fishes predominantly two colors: slamming sammy and opening night.
“I love them,” he said of the baits. “Everywhere I have been with them, I’ve caught fish — Venice, Cocodrie and Big Lake (Lake Calcasieu).
“I am convinced the material in them is better. I can catch a limit with one. Others fall apart after two fish; they do that to get you to buy more baits.”
For the Causeway, Dumas prefers round, unpainted 3/8-ounce jigheads. For fishing at the other bridges, all of which have stronger water currents, he will often use a 1/2-ounce jig. Both size jigs will have strong 4/0 hooks.
Dumas has often had speckled trout pick up his bait while it is lying still on the bottom.
“If you miss a fish, drop the bait immediately,” he said. “They are going to come back and get it. It’s like they come back to get a bait fish that they have killed.”
