Dave Moreland holds undergraduate and masterís degrees in biology, and spent 30 years working with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. After serving 15 years in the field, Moreland became the stateís Deer Program manager in 1992. During his 12 years in that position, Moreland worked to manage the statewide deer herd. He collected physical data from harvested deer, performed nutritional studies and helped monitored the stateís deer for chronic wasting disease.

He closed out his DWF career by serving as the agencyís Wildlife Division administrator, overseeng all work of staff biologists.

After retiring, Moreland began Outdoor Roots to provide such services as wildlife consulting, wildlife surveys, habitat surveys, seminars and workshops. He also is an active outdoor writer.

He is a member of The Wildlife Society, the Southeast Section of the Wildlife Society, the Louisiana Chapter of the Wildlife Society, the Louisiana Association of Professional Biologists, the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Associations and the Quality Deer Management Association.

Moreland has written six books, and has been published in numerous journals and magazines. He also is an associate member and official scorer for the Boone and Crockett Club, the Pope and Young Club and the Longhunter Society.
