  • Sandy with her Red on Plastic in the Lake
It has been a month or two since I ventured into the lake unfortunately, but the wait was worth it. My wife and I did a late afternoon trip today mainly for a boatride since it had been so long. Anyway there were a few schools of reds working the shoreline which made for a fun afternoon.

The buck weighed in at just over 200 lbs, a portion of its antlers still in velvet and had an inside beam measurment of just under 14'. Ormond was accompanied by his Father and two friends - David Smith & John Hodges Davis - during the weekend event

Inshore Fishing in Lake Pontchartrain / Northshore in Southeast Louisiana
Made a run down B. Lacombe and into the Lake to try and catch a few fish holding at drains, but water was not falling very fast and did not get any hits. Went out about 3/4 mile into the lake to see if any salt water moving in and found a line of brown water meeting churned green water. Tasted the water and very salty compared to before Lee. About 5 PPT guess from my taste buds. Hopefully.... Read More

Last year at this time was a little different. We caught a bunch of fish in the cove, including this 8.25lb speck. Hope the salty water comes in soon.

Inshore Fishing in The Rigolets / Lake Catherine in Southeast Louisiana
Made a late afternoon trip yesterday to the Biloxi Marsh via Slidell. Went mainly as a scouting trip for birds diving and tripletail spotting. Got to Rigolets Marina with light rain and stiff NE wind, bought 20 live shrimp and headed out to Lake Borgne for the given objective only to be greeted with very heavy seas which looked like they had all day to build. Aborted trip and decided to head.... Read More

Opinions & Responses in Louisiana
I knew sportsman hated ethanol, but did not realize how much the environmentalists hated it. The more I read on this subject the more I see corn ethanol (which is what is in our fuel) has absolutely no support except with the Ethanol lobby. All of the environmental groups are harping on this non-stop, they hate corn ethanol because it does nothing to help the environment, but 5-6 BILLION.... Read More

Oil Spill in Southeast Louisiana
Well it looks like the Government finally settled in on a number for the flow rate for anyone interested in that stuff. They said at the wells maximum flow it was putting out 62,000 barrels/day plus or minus 10%. 70,000 barrels/day is what I had guessed a couple of months ago with a little research and deductive reasoning. Don't know why BP could not do the same.
Anyway a good summary of the.... Read More

Just cooked my last Tripletail from the '09 season. Man that's good stuff.
Glad I can go get some more of them.

Can we get a thread to focus on the mitigations efforts at hand which will help to alleviate some of the uncertainties of this oil spill in an organized fashion? Mike has done a great job in keeping us up to date, but I know alot of us want to know more and have not been able to find up to date accurate information described with precision.

The most important information are the mitigation.... Read More

update-June 15th
This is getting downright ridiculous. Laugh or cry it is your choice. Last night the Enterprise had an alarm trigger a shutdown of operations. Then again today a suspected lightning strike is suspected of causing a small fire aboard the Enterprise, resulting in the temporary shutdown of oil collection operations. The good news is the fire was quickly extinguished and collection operations should begin again this afternoon.

The Q4000 is being retrofitted to burn 5-10,000 barrels a day from the choke line. Operational with luck today. (not the there has been any so far).

Clear leader drill ship will connect to the kill line an provide an additional 5-10K barrles a day capacity. Unlike the Q4000 the Clear Leader will collect the oil and not burn it.

Toisa Pisces (operational end of June or early July) and the Helix Producer (operational Mid July) will each hook up to a seperate new riser connected to a Manifold on the gulf floor and collect about 25000 barrels a day each if needed. This will replace the Enterprise.

Walked outside my house on the Northshore this morning and the smell of petroleum distillates was in the air. I could not beleive it, so went back inside and walked out again and same smell.

Inshore Fishing in Southeast Louisiana
It seems most of the guys in the May issue of LA Sportsman feel the river will be a big factor this year. Is there anything to support this belief?
Most of the areas I fish are pretty much in line with a typical year regarding salinity. My camp on Vermillion Bay has better salinity than most Aprils.
I looked up river to St. Louis and beyond and don't see much water heading our way. So.... Read More
