There's a launch in Golden Meadow and right next to it is a big hole created by the pump station for the levee. Great place to fish. Also you can fish inside the levee too for freshwater fish(and salt). The park is where you fish inside the levee. Fish on the bottom. Cool spot. Go to Oceana restaurant and order the speacial. You won't regret it.
my bad. I'm using my wife's POS puter. It's so slow and jumpy, I just go with what it lets me do. You gave great directions to there too. I never knew the number of that road. I know it as 'the back road'. I know the store as 'chik-ins' He was a great football player. I'd fish on the bottom though. Did you see the part where I fish in that canal in the park too? Thats a great fishing spot too.
There are several pumping station in the area and they dig out a big hole where the fish come in the very cold weather. You can fish off the bank but there is always a big crowd when the fish are there. Fishing along Hwy 1 now is a like a 20mile fishing pier as all the traffic uses the super hwy. Fish all the run outs that cross through the old hwy 1.
Thanks for the info CapJS! What do you think about tomorrow? I'm off tomorrow and friday but I noticed that the wind will be coming out of the Northeast on friday and thought the fish wouldn't be too active. But tomorrow is a Northwest wind. Do you think Hwy 1 will be productive tomorrow? I have caught saltwater fish in a loooong time thats why I'm so anxious to go! And since I'm coming from Baton Rouge, I really want to make it worth the drive
Hey jls thanks for the info man. I didnt get a chance to go fishing yesterday but I'll be dog'on if I dont go tomorrow! I'm either gonna go to Bayou Blue, Hwy 1, or by that park in Golden Meadow. They are all about 2 hours from my house in Baton Rouge so I really want to make the trip worth the drive. I heard that chumming usually gives fishermen better luck at times. Do you guys ever chum? What techniques do yall use?
caught@ one of the point in shippin canal
Nah i never tried it b4 I've heard of it Just never did it, W/warmer Dayz but still cold mornin I'd wait tll bout 9-11 am b4 i get there that way be lil warmer and fish seem to bite better after sun gets up lil ways. You have Boat??? If so go put in@Golden Meadow Landin by the Park, When ya come out from Launch make a left gona go just lil piece then you make a right then another hard left head down that canal till u get to the 4 way its lil ride not far, if you take right there u'll go into lake a left will take you to shipping channel there are somne good point down that way, If ya bank fishin hit the Pump station by launchlet me know how ya do
when i chum inside marsh its a totally different animal then offshore chumming. off shore you dont have to wait as long for results by inshore takes a very long time because its held in the canals and there are a lot less fish exposed to it and unless a fish passes accross the scent trail he wont detect it.
i find a good point with water moving then i go about 50 yards down current and start sprinkling a few shrimp heads every few feet then after getting back to the point i anchor and about every 10 minutes i'll toss a small handfull of shrimp heads (5 or 6) out the back of the boat a few feet away.
sometimes it can take up to an hour to work but after that you shouldnt have trouble getting your limit of reds and drum.
be warned you bring everything in so lots of small croakers and the unavoidable catfish will come in as well.
the key to this method is the scent trail is carried by the current and the fish follow it to the source (you) then to keep them around they feed on the smaller fish feeding on the chum like little croakers and minnows.
the biggest mistake i see made by those who chum is they leave too soon and the fish start showing up as they are leaving. start chumming and have a few beers, balance your checkbook, reorganise your tackle box, but it takes time to work.
anything you catch right away was already there and chum isnt the reason you caught them. the fish you chummed will show up slowly as they follow the smell until they find you.
if you like to chum then at shrimp season ask someone you know who shrimps to fill a couple of 5 gallon buckets full of little fish for you to use as chum but so they dont float you need to cut them in half or tirds thru the guts. this is why i mainly chum when i have a free source for getting chum.
i also take advantage of shrimp season by buying trash shrimp (100 count or over) and freeze them in gallon containers to use as chum. i do the same with shrimp heads when i de-head shrimp and ask my friends to give me their shrimp heads too.
i find a gallon of chum is usually enough because if you chum more then one spot then you moved too soon or you dont have enough time for the second chumming to work.
keakar........... I thought about gettin some Shad then Freezing them in a 5 gal bucket or 3 gal bucket then drill holes in Bucket&lower in in water off side Boat, Should Work well or use some bait shrimp I've seen some for lil more then $1 lbs now that would work well let ummm defrost lil&get Stanky Here Fishie Fishieeeeeee
a bucket with holes in it aint right, for shallow water chumming because while that might let some of the smell out but not much else.
you want little food bits out there to keep the minnows around as well as tease the fish in with crumbs.
remember your trying to give em a little bit of something for them to hang around or they leave.
if you want to grind up the chum you can use it to fill ice cube trays and have little chum chunks you can toss out or you could use the bucket with holes with that kind of chum by freezing meatballs of chum at the size you like.
warning note: never put cocahoe minnows in a food processor. you end up with a black slimey goo that stinks worse then roadkill lol. maybe it was good chum but i dumped it all so i wouldnt puke lol.
Golden Meadow.... In Golden Meadow there 4 lane highway 3235 take it into Golden Meadow OBSERVE SPPED LIMIT!!!!!......After u in get in Golden Meadow you'll see a Park on right side Go lil further down there lil Convient Store called T POPS,Right there there bridge crosses the Bayou after you cross bridge look to right there parking area you have to walk from there to Levee , Once you Walk over levee there Boat launch, To the Right there pumping station anywhere to the right the Launch you can fish, catch ummm on shrimp or minnow more likely shrimp Poppin cork 18 inches - 3ft deep depends on what area you fishin the Pump Station Hold some good Specks in cold weather
