The Wrong Hot

with the ending of the first season, seeing large amounts of birds i had high hopes that the second season the ducks would be hot for the decoys! But, instead i was HOT to Hot for duck hunting that was for sure. Hunting Point Aux Chene saturday morning with the hope of decent amounts of bird in the area i was quickly sadden by the low amounts of ducks, Temp. of high 50's low 60's and the extreme amounts of people in the area (an everyone knows what happens when there if a large amount of people in the are)my hunting partner and i was only able to take 10 ducks (2 teal,7 dogree, and 1 grey) not and impressive way to start the season.... Sunday i decided to make a trip to Wax Lake in hopes to find a good number of quality birds. with high tide in the morning a little cooler air and high winds i thought for sure it was going to be a decent morning. within the first 2 hours of hunting we where able to take five ducks (3 Teal, drake Mallard, and a drake Wigeon)onces again high numbers of people in the area we struggled to get the birds in range or to even think about looking at the decoys the day quickly went down hill. From that point on we did not even fire a shot for the next 5 hrs. needless to say we need a be change on the weather soon!! everyone have a great rest of the season and good luck!!!

Did anybody see a decent amount of birds? Had to be one of the worst second-split openers for me in 15 years! Thought going in the planets had all lined up for us. We had a good cold front the week before, below average winds, decent tides, and good numbers of birds in the first split but barely any birds Saturday and worst on Sunday. Talked with friends from different areas and about the same report. Even Catahoula was way off! How about the western part of the state??? How about Monroe area. I was in Arkansas last week hunting and not much better.

I shot a limit in the basin, but i was by myself, hunted till ten, and made my shots count. 2 or 3 of us probably wouldn't have fared much better. Saw a ton of flight birds (mainly big groups of mallards) flying east and south.

Hunted my place south of New Iberia and saw good numbers of high flying birds but very slow in shooting. Not much shooting around use either. Very Disappointing

Pointe aux chene

I'd say we saw a handful of ducks which were mostly very weary grey ducks. Saw a few migrating flocks of ducks way up high in the clouds. All in all i'd say a very poor start to the 2nd half which i'd mostly contribute to poor duck hunting conditions. This warm, no wind or south wind stuff won't cut it. When we see it frozen over in Arkansas and north of that we'll see ducks but when will that happen? Dosen't look like anytime soon. I'm getting tired of paying for license and they cannot respect us enough here in Louisiana to adjust the season at least somewhat to give us a break. Guess as long as the 'duck hunting guiding industry' keeps thriving in the states above, they will keep it just as is. Any other reports?

The only good hunts ive had were the front days with good north wind...went yesterday shot a few nothing impressive at all...high water, high temps, no wind, no feed....usually park boat and walk to my spot in barely any water..well yesterday water was comin over my knee boots....what a mess...the entire marsh was flooded makes the huntin very tough.

Best days we also have had in biloxi have been windy over cast north wind days with a front. Other than that its a bust seems like its always high tide in the morning !!!

I was considering doing the same exact thing and during the split i bought i pirogue instead. We been staying a few days until noon ... 1 and 2 oclock when the tide drops a little to see if the birds would start flying and it was still dead. It might take an afternoon hunt if you do one let me know how it goes and ill do the same for you. I might make a hunt in morning fishing the day then go back and hunt evening or something.

we all agree that hunting the fronts are better its a fact for the majority. therfore its the cold weather that drives the ducks. problem is it doesnt last, and these ducks wont migrate untill there food supply freezes and dies further north. every year it seems to get warmer and warmer, its not freezing up north till january, so a lil later season or we will have to give it up

The Key

Weather is the key. The entire Mississippi river valley system and the Mid-west needs to go into the deep freeze for a week with 3 feet of snow on the ground, then it'll change over night
