BRDuckhunter, not saying you didn't see a orca, because I know they are out there, but last week about 30 miles out of Fourchon I too thought I saw one jump. We stopped the boat to watch for it again and just before giving up we saw a huge black and white manta ray jump completely out of the water. The thing was HUGE!!!! We rode toward it and were able to idle directly above the ray. It had to be 20 feet wide!!!! When it was in the air it had very similar color characteristics to a killer whale. Once again, not saying you didn't see one, but that ray sure fooled me.
That is very cool . I've seen one whale in the wild in my life but couldn't tell you what kind it was . It wasn't a killer whale though . The pictures are awesome . Never thought I'd ever see that off our coast .
As for as this site goes , you should have alligator hide ! This is Louisiana ... Lol Louisiana people are gonna say what's on their mind even if it's right or wrong .
you one lucky man, had to be the thrill of a lifetime and i am sure u will always remember!!! some people pay thousands of dollars to go and see things like this and it didn't cost u nothing!!! bet u thought u would need a bigger boat!!! PS, your site wasn't hijacked, like some person said on here!!!
Not exactly related, but perhaps somewhat as uncommon. Me and my father and a few buddies were on a rip catching dolphin on a beautiful rip when I was about 14 years old, this was around '95, and a big whale shark swam directly under our boat. We fished out of a 1968 '20 Bertram Moppy, and the shark was as long as the boat. Without hesitation, one of our companions, a marine biologist, jumped directly into the ocean and swam alongside the giant fish for more than 5 minutes. It was amazing. I have been fortunate enough to fish around the world, yet there is nothing like fishing in the gulf of mexico, it is pure unbridled biology at its finest. Happy fishing to all and thank the lord for the wonderful blessings he allows us to witness.
I was fishing out of south pass sometime after Katrina I think it was 2007. Two buddies in boat facing opposite direction. I saw a killer whale come up and roll and go back down. My buddies saw the disturbed water but not the whale. I had always wondered if I might have halucinated but now know what I saw----- Awesome
I work on a deep water semi submersible drilling rig in the Gulf Of Mexico (GOM), and can confirm a sighting of whales as of 7-17-2012. I will not disclose the location of the rig, but can tell you that we are about 60 to 70 miles south of Venice, in 6,000 foot of water. The whales were about 300 yards off our bow. After a few breathes through there blow hole, they started to dive. We could see the dorsal fins on the backs, and there big tale as they dove. I do not know if they were killer whales, but I do know they were not whale sharks.
So yes there are whales in the GOM right now. We will be keeping an eye out for them, and will try to get some pictures.

Thank you for getting those pics!! My wife thought I was on crack when I told her that her brother and I seen killer whales in the gulf! We acutally seen them two weeks ago about 10 miles out of South Pass. Jumped clean out of the water twice and then disapeared. When the others in the boat got up and started looking they were like y'all are crazy...y'all seen a spinner shark... Kinda hard to mistake a whale for a shark but I was doubting my self a little! Oh was a great trip too...15 YF, 7 nice BF, limit of big snapper and one dolphin...
