Hey who rattled your cage. I was stating that a buddy got gas from a ( ethanol free ) station and it had ethanol after testing. I will test some around my area and if I can find one thats truly ethanol free then I will post it cause I dont want that crap in boat either. Now from what I am told and I work in the automotive industry and have to deal with fuel issues all the time so I have a little experience. I was told that all fuel shipped to louisiana has ethanol....how true that is well only sampling can tell. Now the list published on this site might be good but I will see in my area and I will let ya know what I find. I can care less on Missippi due the fact I dont fish there or by fuel for my boat there.
"Justwant2fish", what do you mean "all fuel shipped into Louisiana is ethanol"?? Just about all of the fuel used in Louisiana is made in Louisiana. There are some companies, namely Shell who has elected to sell only ethanol gas in Louisiana and other states. But, Marathon Oil in Garyville, which is now after it's recently completed expansion, the second largest refinery in Louisiana, makes ethanol free gasoline. So does the Murphy Oil refinery in Chalmette and the Exxon/Mobile refinery in Chalmette also and the Placid Oil Refinery in Port Allen. The EPA regulation exempts small refineries (those that process less than 155,000 barrels/day crude and employ 1,500 or less employees from the ethanol regulation). The EPA only requires refineries to sell 8.25% of their total gasoline sales as ethanol gas in 2010. This is posted on the EPA's web site. You are having trouble finding ethanol free gas in the Baton Rouge area where you live because Baton Rouge is in an EPA "non attainment area" (out of compliance with ozone levels), which requires the use of ethanol gas. The Baton Rouge area is the only area in Louisiana when I last checked it that is an air non attainment area.
You say you work in the automobile business and therefore know something about fuels. I worked as a chemist in oil refineries, so I also think I know a bit about fuels also.
You didn't "rattle my chain", but I just wanted to set the record straight on the ethanol free list on Louisiana Sportsman. Have you even read the main ethanol free page?
i agree with cajun pete!! he is only going with the info we give him! you can't just go by stickers!!! you have to call the owner or distributor to know for sure! i found one station without stickers, here in thibodaux, but called the owner, who also was the distributor and guess what, it was ethanol, but he didn't put stickers!! after i talked to him, he put stickers, because i told him i was going to report him, if he didnt!!! he told me the wind must have blew the sticker off?? and i told him all 8 pumps?? like pete said, just because a station has 100% fuel today, doesn't mean they won't have ethanol tomorrow, its up to them!! thats why you have to keep checking often!! DON'T JUST GO BY THE STICKERS!!!!!! some people mite be giving him info, because they don't see stickers on the pumps!!! WRONG, WRONG, you have to ask, period!!!!!! AIN'T HIS FAULT JUST TRYING TO HELP!!!!! AND I SAY THANKS PETE!!! don't see anyone else trying!!!
justwant2fish, i don't think cajun pete has a problem with you testing all the stations on his list, its just the way you said it, burst your ethanol free bubble, its like you are blaming him personally, which aint right!! i hope you do test all the stations, this certainly would clear up any wrong info he got and i think he would appreciate the help, and everyone else also!!!!! can you tell me where to get an ethanol tester, cause i would like to test my fuel too, just to make sure, thanks!!! REMEMBER, you can test it today and it mite be different tomorrow??????? thats why i want to start testing my own gas!!!!
The process of testing is very easy and effective.
Go to the hardware store and buy a graduated plastic container ounces. Begin by draining off some fuel into a clean container and putting 10 ounces of water into the graduated container. Use 10 ounces so the math will not be difficult.
At this point, add the 10 ounces of fuel and shake the container up a bit. Set it aside for about ten minutes or so and observe the parting line between the fuel and water.Remember that fuel will not mix easily with water but alcohol will. The number of ounces, with each ounces equaling 10%, of additional water indicates the percentage of E that the fuel has.

Oh boy dont feel like typing repeats. Yes jigrig thats the same test we have a fuel test kit that test for alchol ect as well as ethanol but still same set up. Now on the all fuel shipped to louisiana welll I put the disclaimer thats what IO was told but like anything else believe in half what ya hear and less what ya see. I wasnt slammin his ethhanol free gas post I was simply stating that I hate to bust your ethanol free bubble cause as consumers well I think most gas stations lie. Testing is the only way to know. Seems everyone got offended like I was slammin his post if I was I would have posted this on his post.Like I say I dont care who i offend by posting my results and of course i can only check those close to me maybe someone else will check those close to them and we can find really which ones carry good fuel. I am doin this to HELP...........so what you gonna do to help? Right now I am gonna help myself and go fishin for a few days and relax and maybe get some nice reds or specs....not picky then let my buddys know where I caught em so they can get some too. But I will pick up my samples on the way home and keep my reciepts so I can say good or bad.

I just posted how to test for E. It doesn't take a $25 test kit. That's my help.
I'm not to much concerned with E. I've learn to live with it.

OK guys, I'm sure we're all trying to find a way around the ethanol mess in our own way. I am just trying to do my part on a totally volunteer basis. I am not getting paid for my efforts I can assure you. "Savage", thanks for your kind comments.
"Jig" suggests a testing method, which while crude, will work. It is based on the principle that any ethanol present in gasoline, will dissolve in the water layer if water is added to the gas. For those who would like to purchase a test kit, Fuel-Testers makes one that seems to work pretty good. It sells for $24.97 plus $7.00 shipping/handling. The link is:

I'm working on another paper for the Blog section on "ethanol gasoline test kits". But, spring work in the yard and garden have delayed me.
When the heck will the trout start biting?
Justwant2fish, NO ONE made any claims that the stations on the "Ethanol Free Gas Station List" may not have a station that was originally reported as ethanol free but later converted to ethanol gas. If you read the ethanol home page, I ask fishermen and boaters to let me know if a station on the list has since converted to selling ethanol gas SO I CAN TAKE IT OFF THE LIST! I've already had to remove about 10 in the last 6 months. The list is only as good as people feedback to me. Before fueling, you should always look for the "Contains up to 10% ethanol" label on the pump (it's Louisiana State Law that each pump MUST have this label if it is selling ethanol gas), and if there is not such a label, still ask the gas station manager if they are in fact selling ethanol free gas.
Testing is also strongly recommended if in doubt. The list may not be perfect, but it is far better than we had before.........NOTHING! Why don't you try to help the cause instead of trying to disclaim it??
Good luck on testing all stations on the list....there are almost 150 stations across Louisiana and some in Mississippi.
