Lake pontchartrain fishing

Reply

Alright guys the plans were to go down to the duck lease to go fishing but there has been a change. me and iron man will be fishing closer to Baton Rouge on Sunday morning. we have two choices either fish the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway or head to the Rigolets. which one do ya'll think would be better for us to fish? we are new to both areas. that is we have never been to either. It seems like there are some good reports coming from both areas. We will be fishing out of my 17 foot xpress with a 90 yamaha. this is the bass boat model. do ya'll think it is safe for us to fish out of this boat in either of the places? the weather is looking good for sunday with 0% chance of rain and all sunny, but it doesn't show the wind. I am kind of leaning towards fishing the lake because you really don't have to go searching for structure just fish the pillings of the causeway. Honestly im kind of lost on what we should do. well thanks in advance and im just looking for a little input on which place would be better for us on the first time and if any of ya'll have any tips on what baits to use when fishing in either places please share they will be more than welcome! thanks guys and god bless

winds
as of now they are calling for 5-10 out of the north, you should be fine inside the 4 mile marker and there is plenty fish inside 4 miles to catch on the north side, but things can change, I think its going to be a good day after this front blow through on saturday.. I will be out there after 12 noon sunday, just pick your days if it lookd rough from land it is really bad from boat. good luck

Live bait.
Any live bait, shrimp, pogies, finger mullet, crabs. Net some if you can. Fish the pilings and oyster beds 20'-30' deep and move the bait along slowly, use a small sinker. The tidal flow will be very slow due to neap tides this weekend, so you'll have to move around to find the fish.

Rigolets
You've got the perfect boat to fish the marsh in the Rigolets. Read some of my reports from the past couple weeks and it will give you a good idea of where to fish.

please don't fish Lake P
Flies, please don't try to fish the Causeway in that boat. If you wanna fish Lake P, launch at Bonnet Carre, and fish the mouths of the bayous that empty into Lake P from the Labranche Wetlands.

BUT NOT ON A NORTH OR EAST WIND!!!

I'd much rather read your reports on here than read about you in the Times Picayune.......................

Not so much
Yea I wouldn't fish causway if I were you... Dangerous and aggrevating for a first timer. Go somewhere that your confident in putting some fish in the boat

Be careful
Be careful Flies that lake can go from smooth as glass to rough, rough! and very quickly. That lake can get scary! Personally I would not go in a bass boat cause of that Ive been out there in my dads Deep V and been tossed around. Be careful.

rod of choice---------Castaway Skeleton worm rod Heavy

Shorelines
Fish the shorelines, around the causeway or outta LaCombe, from what ive been told the trout have made into the lake, so shoreline fishing should be on fire..
