Just ordered a 17x5 semi-vee Hanko hull. Was looking for info on troll motor size. Would a 12 volt 55 pound thrust be large enought or should I go up to the 24 volt 70 pound thrust? Any thoughts?
Just my 2 cents worth. New boat coming I would certainly not want to be under powered. I would definitely look towards 24 volt 70lb or more. You can always run it slower. Hope this helps.
Just for perspective,my 18' Kenner center console has a 24 volt,Motorguide 75# trolling motor and sometimes fishing extreme tides in Lake Pontchartrain on the bridges requires full throttle to keep from being smashed into the bridge pilings.
i don't believe the extra weight of the extra battery will hurt, i have a 71lb 24v on my 16foot and it works really well, I have to throttle back in a no wake zone
My buddy loves his motor. Says it run about 42mph or so {always somebody faster}. It is great on gas as he runs the bay a great deal on very little fuel. About 200 hours on his so far with no trouble. May have just killed it for him with that commect. LOL.
