Carencro man dies in boating accident near Whiskey Bay

15-foot aluminum boat struck an Interstate 10 piling, LDWF says

A 31-year-old Carencro man died Thursday afternoon when the boat he was traveling in with his father struck an Interstate 10 piling between the Ramah and Whiskey Bay exits, according to a news release from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Search crews with the LDWF and the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office located the body of Justin Viator in the Whiskey Bay area about 2:30 p.m., the release states.

Viator was a passenger in a 15-foot aluminum boat being operated by his father, according to the release. When the vessel struck the I-10 piling, both men were ejected into the water.

A passing boater rescued the father, who was transported to Our Lady of the Lake hospital in Lafayette with non-life-threatening injuries, the release states.

Neither man was wearing a life jacket, and alcohol is not suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash, according to the release.
