Proposal would create new Wildlife Management Area within Kisatchie National Forest

New WMA would encompass the Catahoula National Wildlife Management Preserve, LDWF says

Talks are underway between the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the U.S. Forest Service to create a new Wildlife Management Area within Kisatchie National Forest.

According to a news release, the new WMA would encompass the Catahoula National Wildlife Management Preserve, which is contained within the Catahoula and Winn Ranger Districts in Grant and Winn parishes.

The proposed WMA would consist of 37,813 acres consisting mainly of upland pine and upland pine hardwood. The area is popular for outdoor activities including hunting, camping and hiking, the release states.

According to WMA Program Manager Steve Smith, the LDWF would be able to assist the Forest Service in management activities including timer harvest treatments, prescribed burning, data collection and habitual surveys.

Public comment is now being accepted, with a decision on whether or not the cooperative endeavor takes place expected next spring. Creation of a new WMA would require action from the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, the release states.
