Labadieville man pleads guilty to September sea gull killing in Home Depot parking lot

Bertot receives $1,210 fine and one year of inactive probation, LDWF says

A 29-year-old Labadieville man pleaded guilty in Eastern District Federal Court in New Orleans on Dec. 10 to illegally killing 49 sea gulls in the Elmwood Home Depot parking lot.

Jackoby D. Bertot was cited by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in connection with the September incident, according to a press release.

Bertot was accused of speeding through the parking lot into a resting flock of sea gulls shortly before 10 p.m. on Sept. 2, the release states.

Bertot pleaded guilty before Judge Daniel E. Knowles III and was ordered to pay a $1,210 fine and serve one year of inactive probation, according to the release.

Violations of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act carry up to $15,000 in fines and up to six months in jail.
