Almost 2,500 fish were caught and released during the recent International Women's Fishing Association's Louisiana Slam Tournament held out of Venice June 10-12.

Merrily Simmons, who primarily fishes Florida but knows her way around the Venice marshes from fishing many redfish rodeos, captured the first-place gold disk. Simmons anchored her win by catching 22 bull redfish on the last day of the event, which draws anglers from across the country.

Florida's Aledia Tush took second place, while Lisa Everett of North Carolina won third.

Twenty-four IWFA teams fish the tournament, with the lady anglers being guided by Louisiana fishing guides operating out of Venice Marina.

Guides who captured first-, second- and third-place prizes were Peter Young, Kayse Bourn and Richie Taranto Jr.

Anglers are limited to fishing with 8-pound Ande line, and could catch redfish, trout, flounder and bass.
