Trailing Tales
Sometimes heavy bleeding simply ends and the deer disappears, leaving hunters to flounder about in hopes of tripping over a dead deer. A decade ago, Todd Masson was about as accomplished a deer hunter as Ingrid Newkirk.

To help him change that, I invited him up to a tract I was leasing in St. Helena Parish. This section of woods could never be mistaken for Alabama’s Black Belt, but it held a decent number of small deer.
Mastering Marsh Deer
The author’s son David downed this wide-antlered marsh buck. The smile tells the story for this young hunter. “Not bad for a marsh buck!”

How many times had I heard those words?

Now, here I was looking at a buck that was more than “not bad.” He would score 130 B&C if I could put a Ľ-inch flexible steel tape measure on him.
Permanent Plots
Persimmons Let's face it: Plowing, soil testing, liming, fertilizing, planting and killing weeds to maintain a green field includes exhausting work and often great expense. A green field, like a two-edged sword, can and will attract and feed deer.

Here is a weekend worth of video clips of Bucks moving around during the Rut at our place in South Texas in late Dec. 2008. Nice bucks but no shooter! A lot of fun to watch and video and in another year or two one of these boys will be big enough!
“Let them go so they can grow”.
