Postage-Stamp Plots, Year II
Taking just a little time to manage the land you have, no matter how small, can pay big dividends down the road. Where does the time go? It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I first wrote about the postage-stamp plots that Louisiana Sportsman editor Todd Masson and I began to keep back in 2008.
Mercury Matters
Ricky Aucoin regularly hunts in what most deer hunters would call stifling weather. His approach is to try and keep his scent to a minimum and just wait out the deer. It wasn’t what any sane hunter would call a cool morning, with daybreak temperatures hovering about 72.
Water, Water, Everywhere
Julio Basas arrowed this buck in knee-deep water after finding signs of the deer when the water had pulled out. The Morgan City hunter believes mature bucks avoid the ridges next to bayous except during the rut. Julio Basas had seen some big rubs, and knew there should be a big deer hanging around the area. The Morgan City hunter also had seen a faint trail the buck was using — when the water was low enough to reveal damp soil.

Here is a neat video I took of my girl friend’s daughter Allie shooting a nice Doe at our place in south Texas during the Thanksgiving week. This was her first one this season and her second ever.
She was using a Remington Model 700 in .243 cal. This videoing is so cool and a great way to show kids what and how other kids are hunting.

Waterfowl breeding habitat in Canada receives recent boost
Recent rainfall has dramatically expanded available habitat for waterfowl in the all-important Canadian prairies, expanding the nesting period for ducks and increasing survival. Water on most of Canada’s prairies wasn’t abundant a few short weeks ago. It is now. And while farmers and communities are dealing with the wet hand they have been dealt, ducks in some of the water-logged areas are likely going to benefit because of the moisture.
