Looking for a place to set up my hog trap. I lost my lease last year and would like to be able to trap hogs. I keep one then donate the rest to those in need. My trap is a rooter gate style 4x4x8. I live in Ascension and would like to be in the general vicinity to be able to monitor as needed.

Thanks

Hunted this past Friday. I decided to check the hog trap after the hunt. Found a sow in there. She weighed 105lbs. Re-baited the trap. With the cold weather some more should find their way there. I use a rooter gate style trap (multi-catch). I have had as many as three in my trap about the size of this one.

Made the evening hunt last night. @ 4:05 two does came out. I tried looking through the scope to see them and did not have a good shot. By this time one busted me and they took off. 5:10 a 6pt came out from the same trail the two does did earlier. Got him in my sights. Dropped him in his track. Shot him in the neck and it hit his lungs, then the rest of the body. Barely tore his stomach open. Enough to stink things up.

I've been watching this one for a few weeks. Just need him to come out during the day. Any size on the width of his antlers?

I bought my 2005 Honda Rancher 350 2wd ES new. I need a new set of tires as these are originals. I will be changing them out hopefully after deer season. What is a good tire that is more aggressive than the original, but not too aggressive. Just want something with more 'bite'.

Got this guy on camera. He looks like he's on his last leg.

We found 3 fresh scrapes along a food plot today. They were withing thirty yards or so all together. Is there a particular strategy to hunting a scrape. Anything to avoid etc...Help is appreciated!

My brother in Oklahoma is in need of Round bales of hay due to the drought that has been going on all summer up there. Does anyone out there have some to sell @ a reasonable price? I can put you in contact with him to discuss the particulars.

Thanks!

Haven't seen any reports from Brandon Carter. Is he still guiding?

February 28, 2011 at 7:52pm

I went to top off my feeder and swap my camera card and look what I found! Are these two dogs fighting each other or fighting over something. This is the second time I have seen both of these dogs.

A good friend of mine from Oklahoma and his buddy are looking to go on an alligator hunt this fall. Is there someone I can put them in contact with to schedule a trip? Any help is greatly appreciated!

How old do you think this deer is?

January 22, 2011 at 5:12pm

To the gentleman that has the bloodhound in this area with an orange collar, I let your dog that was caught in my hog trap out. He took off out of the trap when I raised the door. PLEASE keep him and your other dogs kenneled or penned up. There are others in this area who are not as nice as I am.

I am hunting tomorrow morning. Here's my dilema. The wind first thing in the morning will be from the SW and then swinging around to the NW by 8 am. I've got two stands in mind. One is a stand that faces due West with a feeder out in front of me and the second is a food plot that faces two directions one way to the North and the other view to the NE. Do you hunt the wind that is there @ the moment or what the wind will do? Help here is GREATLY appreciated as I am trying to pay more attention this year to how I hunt.

November 17, 2010 at 6:18pm

So here are my options in the morning. NE wind and stand choice of cut over with stand in SW of cut over so wind is blowing in my face and feeder out in the middle of the cutover. SECOND: Box Stand over food plot(small), with views from north on our left and south to our right, THIRD buddy stand just put up today over a food plot in the shape of a way with the stand facing NE, so again wind will be blowing in our face. Any guidance is greatly appreciated! This is the first hunt for my 6 1/2 year old son. We are brining plenty of Gameboy games...LOL..

Has anyone used sweet feed for deer instead of corn, bran etc...? What about using it in a feeder?

When is the special youth hunt in area 1 this year?

October 25, 2010 at 7:10am

Ok. So our lease was 'select-cut' this year. The owner said she would get us a dozier, but the guy that runs the lease did not want to take advantage of it for fear of running up the cost of the lease. We did some of it cleaned up with a tractor/bucket. I planted two food plots (on in my area and one additional for club). Now he's bringing in a dozier to do some work and exchanging the work for a place to hunt for the person. Now the place he has picked out is the place I planted for the club. I told him that it the season has already started and not too fond of traffic since I bow hunt. I'm pretty p!$$ off if you ask me. It's a small tract of land and we don't shoot much. I think the dozier work will be good, just not now. What's your opinion?

I want to buy my 9 year old a rifle. Is a .243 pretty standard @ that age?

I bought my son a Tikka 7mm08 two years ago with a Nikkon Bushmaster BDC scope. I was looking a a .243. Everyone at work talked me out of it and I am glad. Great rifle. I even use it from time to time. Good luck with your choice.

A comment titled: Rooter Gate Trap in response to a report titled: Hog Traps

I bought the rooter gate trap that Tractor Supply sells. Saw one in San Antonio a few years ago. Could not find anyone that sold/made them around here until TSC set up. I finally caught my first three hogs in it. 3-90lb boars. Worked well. Only advice that I have if there is other feed near they will not come to the trap. I took corn off of my stand because they were tearing everything up. Set up the trap about 100 yards up the trail, left it open(baited) for a week and then set the trap. Whammo! I now have a refrigerator full of pork. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I hunt in between 10 and 63 and have done so for six years now. This has been the worst to date. Have not even seen a deer while in the stand. There are still plenty of acorns on the ground. Last year we should have shot several deer, but only harvested two due to poor shooting on a members part. (3 hunters/240 acres).

He needs about 60 bales to get him through. He has about 40 round bales left. This will not last long as there is no green grass for the cattle to eat.

That is a bloodhound to the left. The same one I caught in my trap two weeks ago. After they left, the deer came in. It gets frustrating.

A comment titled: Protien feed in response to a report titled: Deer Protein Feed

I used Antler Max with WaterShield, which is a moisture resistant protien feed. It is about $13 for a 50lb. sack. For that reason I mixed it with corn. You can find it at some local feed stores around Baton Rouge.

I hunt off of Gilead Road. On monday afternoon, there was a buck chasing a doe. Literally right behind her. Wish they would have stopped so I could squeeze off a bullet, but they did not check up.

I was looking @ the weather channel's app on my iPhone. I noticed there was a difference when I got into the stand. Never trust a weather forecast. LOL. I got there it seemed like right after the rain ended. I hunted a cutover that is new this year. Did not see a thing. On to Oklahoma next week. Hopefully we'll be productive up there. Taking my 9 year old to some family property.

I have used baking soda on a rinse cycle for about two years now. It works. Also they have a scent/uv dye killer in the camping section in Wal-Mart for about 5 bucks or less that I have had success with. Also on my way in I will take a small branch off of a pine and rub it on my clothes. Good luck!

Well we ended up going this evening. I woke Luke up this morning and he didn't want to go, so I did not force it. This afternoon he wanted to go so off we went. The wind was dead and we hunted the cutover. No activity at all, but the best time was had by dad who has his six year old with him!

I haven't bought a rifle for him yet. I was either going to let him use my 30-06 or shotgun. depending on where we hunt at in our lease. We'll see what happens.
