I want to rig some jugs for gar fishing and wanted some opinions on hooks: treble, j hooks, circle as well as sizes. Plan on using shad or live bream. Thanks for any tips.

To hog hunters hunting the Pearl River WMA, please be advised that there is private land bordering the WMA that is posted. Please respect the private land by not running dogs or hunting on it. Retrieving dogs that leave the WMA as well as not knowing the boundaries between the WMA and private land is not considered an excuse for trespassing. Those found on private land will have their registration numbers recorded and turned into the proper authorities.

My father has always wanted a Model 12 and we got him one for his birthday. It is 3 inch Heavy Waterfowl model in 30 inch full choke . It was made in 1959 and I don't think he can shoot steel through it. He really would like to use it for ducks. Looking for some advice on other non toxic loads such as bismuth that are softer than steel and won't damage the barrel. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, BF35

Will be in Grand Isle on the 17th and 18th. Was wondering what the surf fishing and crabbing has been like lately. If anyone needs to fill a spot for a snapper trip, would love to jump on if possible.

Hoping some of you gun experts can give me your opinions. I am looking to buy a pistol, have narrowed my choices down to a Glock Model 17 or a Browning High Power both in 9mm. Really like the Glock, but it does not have a safety while the Browning does have a safety. The Glock is hammerless which I like, but the Browning has a single action hammer mechanism. Really don't know much about pistols, plan on taking the concealed carry course once I have made my purchase. Thoughts on these models would be greatly appreciated as well as recommendations on gun dealers in the BR-NO-Laf. area.

Thanks,

All,

Tried to get this going a few years ago but ended up moving out of stat, back in LA now. Was thinking after the season, everybody who wants to, try to meet up somewhere and put the names to the faces over a few adult beverages and tell stories, lies, make plans to hunt the next season, etc. Obviously we are scattered througout the state, but we could do one in several areas of the state. I used to work at a bar when I was at LSU and could possibly swing some drink specials for the ones in the BR area. Let me know your thoughts.

Looking into purchasing a used White Water Bay Boat. I know they don't make them anymore and that is a concern. Wanted to hear anyone's opinions good or bad, and hopefully someone knows why they are no longer in production.

Thanks in advance

I read Sunday that it does not look like the LDWF will get any money from the general fund. It seems like the Dept. has been strapped for cash for years. Wanted to know how all of you felt about increasing license fees. With the cost of gas skyrocketing, not to mention the cost of guns, fishing rods, camo, etc. I wouldn't mind an increase since I am going to continue to hunt and fish. The license is the cheapest part of the whole thing nowadays. Would like to hear some opinions.

Thanks,

Couldn't hardly sleep last night for watching The Weather Channel. That front coming through has and will be dropping
5-10 inches of snow from Tulsa up through Chicago. St. Louis is getting hit pretty hard right now. All of the snow on the ground should push the ducks our way. Hope everyone has a productive weekend as we put the first split in the books. Heading to the camp this morning around ten. Please post reports about how your hunts went and be safe out there.

With all the talk and excitement of duck season just around the corner, I wanted to share some info. that could affect our best friends and trusty hunting partners. Took my 9 year old Lab to the vet for her yearly shots and physical and to have a "bump" on her back leg checked out. The vet stuck a needle into it and checked the drawn fluid out under a microscope. It appeared to be a mild form of cancer. Had it surgically removed two days later and sent off to a lab to be biopsied. Came back as cancer but this particular type is unlikely to spread if removed and if it redevelops it is usually in the same place. Molly suffered no ill effects of surgery other than a few stitches and two weeks of no swimming or serious work. Stitches come out tomorrow and she will be ready and willing when the season opens. Moral of the story, if you notice a lump or knotty area on your dog, especially older ones, have it checked as quickly as you can. We got lucky, had it stayed in there it could have spread and only gotten worse. We invest a lot of time and money in our four legged hunting partners and members of the family and they deserve the utmost care we can give them.

Hoping someone might have a rainfall total from yesterday and today in the Ferriday-Jonesville area. Have a duck lease in that area and would like to know how much rain that area has received. Hoping to save some money by not having to pump water on the fields, diesel is still pretty high.

Heading to Grand Chenier on Oct. 12th. Not familiar with that area at all. Was wondering how the trout, redfish, and crabs were biting? Also need to know if the 15 speck per person limit is in effect in that area. Any advice would be appreciated.

Was curious as to what kind of conditions the marsh in SE LA was in with duck season approaching. Wondering what the effect of the storms coupled with the low rivers may be on what the ducks feed on down in the marsh. Any info. or thoughts would be appreciated.

A comment titled: AJs in response to a report titled: Venice ajs and snapper?

We always did well with Diamond Jigs. Drop them all the way to the bottom then jig them up as fast as you can. As for live bait, we would use a shad rig or sabiki rig to catch hardtails. We would drop them down on a snapper set up. Best success was when we were not tied up to the rig. Once we hooked up, we used the motor to drag them away from the rig. Good luck!!

A comment titled: Rice in response to a report titled: WOW--DU/USA Rice Federation

Rice productin is going up in AR and MO and more ducks are staying above us. I don't see how you can blame the farmer or landowner for managing for waterfowl and leasing the land out for blinds or to a guide service. Duck hunting is big money and they are just taking advantage of it. Willing to bet that any one uf us would do the same.

A comment titled: Live Hogs in response to a report titled: Legalities on trapping hogs (selling live or dead hogs)

You may want to check with the LA Dept of Agriculture. Not sure about LA but it is illegal to transport live wild hogs in TX unless they are being brought to a slaughter facility. Reason being is that wild hogs can carry alot of diseases like brucellosis that can be transferred to cattle and the DOA wants to keep that from happening. I believe oversight transfers from WLF to DOA once the hogs are caught.

A comment titled: Alligator Processing in response to a report titled: Alligator Processing

Try LeBlanc's deer processing in Morganza. I know they buy crawfish and I think they buy alligators. They might be able to do it.

If you want to do it yourself, there is a guide on the LDWF website that shows how to skin one. As for the meat, remove all of the fat you find. The meat under the cheeks is to me some of the best. The legs have a kind of dark meat and was sometimes sold as turtle meat, used it in a sauce piquant with some loin and tail meat. It all came out good.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you draw tags? Applied for Pearl River but wasn't pulled.

A comment titled: Old River in response to a report titled: Old river near Morganza

Look under the weather tab on this website and you can find the river stages and predictions. The fishing really shuts off when the water is coming in though you can catch some catfish in the Narrows which connects the main lake to the Miss River. I went two weeks ago and tried for sacalait and bream, did not do too well. Water was faling but falling really fast. Caught some catfish in the narrows. Lots of other boats there catching as well. Good luck

Grease gun, tire tool, spare bearings, races, and caps for trailer.

Keep all of the tools in a plastic dry box and vacuum seal the flares and bearing parts. Keep everything in the front storage locker along with several bottles of water and some MRE in case out there overnight or a long time. Hope we never have to use it. Have towing clause thru boat insurer.

A comment titled: Narrow in response to a report titled: Catfishin

If you head east (right) after launching you will take a left at Alligator Point and head north. You will be going away from Mondieu Lake and the Ballpark.

The narrows will be a cut on the Raccourci side. Take it easy cause when the water is coming in it has a tendency to build some pretty big sandbars. You should be able to get all the way to the Mississippi River if you wanted. If the water is coming out of the woods, fish all the drains. Google Old River Morganza Map and a map will come up.

A comment titled: Catfishing in response to a report titled: Catfishin

I would try the narrows, the Mississippi is cresting now so the water should be going out. Have been wanting to fish it all spring and summer but the water has been too high. Sacalait, bream, and bass should start to turn on when the BR gauge gets below 25ft. May want to check with the launch to see if it is open. Let everyone know how you do. BF35

Bought a used boat with a Yamaha 90 2 stroke and had same problem. Had a mechanic change plugs, adjust the mixture and cleaned carbs as you did. Might try changing the fuel if it is old and also checking fuel lines for holes cracks since it can suck air in and starve the motor for gas. Mine was a pretty easy fix and has run fine since. Where are you located. Guy that worked on mine is in Slidell and very good as well as reasonable. Will send contact info if interested. Hope this helps. BF35

Never tried beef melt, but think it would not stay on the hood very well. I use cut shad when setting out jugs and that works very well for me. Should be able to get some shad with a castnet. Looking for them breaking the surface and throw there. Good luck.

Grew up on New Roads, live in BR. My uncle used to cook them and I think Big Boy's which used to be the Sonic Drive Inn used to serve them along with a couple of other places around town. We used to go gig garfish at Old River off the bridge over the canal that led to Ole Miss Hunting Club when the water was high. Kinda like it is now. Good times!!

A comment titled: Hoop Nets in response to a report titled: Hoop net help

Most fisherman use cheese pressings or you can buy blocks with cheese and grain fines in it. Lake Ramsey Grocery north of Covington usually carries the blocks. Will need a mesh bait bag. The Fish Net Company in Jonesville has anything you could want as far as net fishing goes. I just ordered a bunch of crawfish traps from them as well as some other stuff. www.fishnetco.com

Just know that you can't use nets below the saltwater line.
