Made the 2 hour trip Sunday morning, got in my fav spot right at daylight. Son in law came for the slaying.
We found very clear water, a roaring 'knock you down' surf, a stiff SE wind and jack fish in close feeding ---- trout were almost non existent.
Was surprised to see such clear water with a strong surf, but it was there.
We fished from daylight to 9:30 catching one trout. We saw/talked to 20 others that had a grand total of 4 trout.
Not all reports are good, so if you missed yesterday morning getting up at 2:45 a.m. trekking down to the beach, making a mile walk in the sand carrying your gear, catching no fish -THEN getting a speeding ticket on your way home------, you missed nothing.
If you made the call to NOT go yesterday- Good Call.

So I'm sitting home in Gonzales watching the weather/tides/winds for the last week thinking this past weekend had to be great for Elmers/Grand Isle beaches with North winds and good / moderate tides. Literally Sunday at 5:00 pm made up my mind to try it this morning.
Got to my spot before daylight and by the time I had left , had met 6 other fine Louisiana gentlemen that were all much younger than me . We all limited out and were culling down before my departure at 9:45.
North winds @ 2-5 mph (great for this area) .
Water clarity was stained then turned clear (incoming tide) Did I mention the water was COLD? There were some shrimp jumping, a great sign !
Just about all the fish came on sinking twitch baits then shut off for a bit, then started on plastics any color as long as they were chartreuse .
Really enjoyed meeting these young men, promising to know Louisiana is still cranking out Sportsmen like these guys.
Only in Louisiana.
Have fun, be courteous to your fishing neighbor .

Any details? He didnt appear sick in any way, spoke w/him in the spring at Lamar Dixon. Always liked his reporting style. Curious as to what took him from us. He was only 59 years old.

Team Jeansonne this morning consisted of my son Stephen and myself launching from Sweetwater. We stumbled into Black Bay being greeted with 2-3 ft seas (NOT what was forecasted), party cloudy skies & ~5-7 SE winds. The 100 live croakers in the baitwell made the trip just fine.We saw only one boat in Black Bay/Breton Sound this trip. Heading southeast for another 25 minutes past Stone Island, we set down at a favorite spot where we dropped the anchor at 6:41 a.m.

At 7:41 a.m. we picked up with 50 nice trout & one red. Trout were 16-21 inches . And we left with 100 live croakers. ALL fish were on plastic paddle baits in white/chartreuse tail or avocado/red glitter paddle baits . Hate it when they do that. What do you do w/100 live croakers? We gave them to 3 guys back on high ground just launching.

Great day to be on the water as by 8:00 winds were dead and water was slick.

Making Memories with my son that we will both remember for years. He says he caught more & bigger than me, and we all know how that goes. Great day.

Black Bay water is the color of Gulf water. Beautiful. Past Stone island south 3 miles is where I turned around. Not much shrimp/bait fish. Caught 22 trout all on plastic ...17-22 inches. Kept 1 red and broke off 8-10 more . When the bait shows up (any day now) this area will be on fire. Happy Fishing.
Side Note: My beloved Lonesome Island isnt even a blip on the dept finder any more. My other pre-Katrina rigs- all gone. Its like fishing a new area for me and best buddy.

Not really much to report from this morning's trip. While there were several people on the beach fishing,it looked like just about everyone had caught a few but no limits did I see. 3,7,10 fish stringers mostly. Live bait and plastic.
The boats braving to come close enough to anchor just outside the 2nd sand bar did catch fish, however it looked spotty, nothing fast & furious. And small-ish fish.
Absolutely zero wind from 5:30 till I left at 12:00 noon, surf was rough & water was stained.
If you didnt go you didnt miss much. In My Opinion.
Which means you know they're gonna set the surf on fire after 12 noon. Right?
TS Cindy didnt hurt the beach and actually cleared it from lots of debris.
Thats why they call it fishing.

June 25, 2017 at 5:16pm

After a 10+ year absence from surf fishing I returned today. Been studying the tides/wind forecast & saw today was to be 3-5 mph NORTH till ~ noon, yesterday was about the same. With a full moon & great tides I entered the water at 6:10 am today.

Later the day went the better the bite once the tide switched to outgoing. We switched over from paddle baits to top water at ~10:00 am (you HATE top water for trout, right?)

I went as a solo trip but quickly made a new friend where we shared baits/equip. Louisiana has a way of doing that. His wife out-fished him while she was in the water, babysitting on shore most of the day.

My limit of 25 kept w/up to 3.5 pounds, average fish was 17-18 inches. Culled from ~ 75 to keep those mentioned. In all my years of fishing Elmers/Grand Isle I have seen the water this clear only twice & today was one of those times. Amazing to see your fish before they hit the Top Dogs in any color as long as it was red or pink.

Good luck, be courteous when you go and make new friends. Life is short. Louisiana is truly blessed.

And, Oh ! God Bless Our President Donald J Trump.

First time back to Black Bay since pre-Katrina to fish, so its been a long time. Hardly recognized the area, none of my fav islands were there. Some of my fav rigs gone, etc.
2 of us ended with keeping 36 trout 14-19 inches long, all on artificial. 2 reds. Wind picked up at 10:15 so we called it a day.
Water was chocolate milk everywhere. Lots of driftwood ,be careful when you go.
Did not see one other boat while on water, had the bay to ourselves.
Sweetwater Marina -very nice people and very accommodating.

Looking for Dry Dock Storage on Hwy 23 between Buras and Venice. Closer to Venice the better. Looking for a 6 month lease, enclosed area for 22 X 9 ft bay boat w/ trailer. Electricity furnished would be nice but not a necessity.

If you have info please post or email me directly at: Sowtrout@cox.net
Thank you, much appreciated.

Question about Reggio area if anyone knows. Havent been to this area since before Katrina. 2 questions:
If you launch at Reggio Marina (is this still possible?) can you still run to Terre'A Bouffs thru Bayou Juanita?
Will be in a 24 ft Champion Bayboat. Thanks for any input.

Anyone out there that has an H&R Handi Rifle- how much did you pay for the gun only-and where did you get it?
Bought the Buffalo Classic last Sept., hunted with it this season and have decided I want the Handi Rifle instead. Looking for a fair price to put on my Buffalo Classic, and would like to know what a Handi Rifle costs new.

Looking for a replacement winch to fit the Bad Boy buggy. Currently have a Ramsey ATV 2500 on it ,but it has bit the dirt. Took it down to find gook in the end cap with the brushes, the armature is rusted and the gear section is locked up. Looks like this winch was a piece of garbage for only being on the buggy for 2 years.
ANYWAY- Looking for a new winch and not an expensive $500 job.
emails or postings appreciated to help with my quest.
thanks

If anyone has this scope I would appreciate any feedback you can give. Thanks in advance.
Yesterday I bought the H&R Buffalo Classic 45/70 , today I bought the Cabela's BDC (Bullet Drop Compensator)scope designed for this rifle. It is a low end priced scope in 3X9 and 40 mm objective. The salesman at Cabela's stated the scope is designed for this gun with the Hornady Lever Revolution 325 gr bullet, HOWEVER- when you read the brochure that comes with the scope, it says the BDC dots are preset within the scope for 500 gr. bullets.
Has anyone any experience with the Hornady 325 ammo AND has this scope? If so, what have you found with the BDC and your actual experience with bullet drop as compared to the BDC. Knowing this may be a tall order, but hopeful there is someone out there that can shed some info. Thanks.

October 06, 2008 at 6:28pm

Just picked up a new 45/70 to use in Mississipi during the Primitive Weapons season (and more, maybe). When I left that state and stopped deer hunting several years ago you COULD NOT use a scope on a muzzle loader. What are the regulations now concerning the use of a scope on a primitive weapon in Miss.? Before I jump off into buying another scope I need to know the above.

Also, for those familiar with this caliber, at what distance can you stay accurate with reasonable certainty? Is 100 yards the upper limits, or 150? What bullet weight would you recommend?
I would suspect 100 yards to be the upper end of my hunting range given the place I will be hunting, but would like to know the performance out to 150 yards-just in case!?!?
The new gun is an H&R 45/70 Govt.in the Buffalo Classic 32 inch barrel
Thanks for any and all replies.

The end of an Era ?? Hardly not, but due to health opportunities I am forced to sell my 7 and 8 pound trout hauling Bay Boat to a fortunate soul that has the distinct advantage of using a boat "broke-in" to catching monster trout. Once on anchor at the correct spot, you'll automatically have the attention of the sows.

For all those that wanted to know when I put my boat up for sale, it's in the classified on this site.
It WILL NOT be placed on """"that other site """""

I've made 5 trips to Elmers since May 7 this year, all spaced kind of evenly apart. The first two trips was a slaughter, limits of nice fish up to 4 pounds but by and large the average was 2 pounds. Plenty of sub 15 inch throwbacks.
The next 3 trips totaled 7 fish. I chose good tide days ,light winds (under 8 MPH) and what I thought would be a non roaring surf (4 out of 5 were good)
All trips had great colored water.
If you figure it out, let me know.
Delacroix- my home turf- has been dead too. What gives ?

Where I fish is the places I have done well in the past, and yes I prefer walking to those places.
When birds are diving in the surf, you can stop there.
I can not talk to fishing the pier at night as I have never done that. However I hear it is a great place during certain times of the year.

Plastic paddle baits with 1/4 and 3/8 ounce jig heads
Best colors are white/chartreuse tails, white, creole shrimp (Matrix Shad brand) and plain chartreuse.
Avocado with red glitter is a time tested good bait for specks in the surf (for me ,anyway)
I have seen people use the old style shad rigs -2 baits rigged on one leader- and often catch 2 at a time although they do seem to be smaller fish.

Top water baits (when the surf is mostly calm) are good in any colors of red or pink, chart again is good. Top Dogs are a popular brand for this

Sinking or suspending twitch baits in red, chart,or hot pink are also good. Mirro Lure is a major brand

I always wear a life jacket when fishing the beach as insurance that I come back without swimming to a near by rig first.
Hope this helps.

No, it was in Edgard on Highway 3127 . 55 MPH posted speed limit. Not a home/business in sight for 10 miles either direction. Improved roads. Cleared shoulders. 1:50 PM on a clear day .
Its a money trap.
Not an excuse as I was clearly above the limit, but thought I had my cruise set at 55, but instead it was 65 (actually 67)
Its only money, I'll pay the ticket. But Edgard can stay behind the times far as Im concerned. I'm rerouting and will go the longer route of 8.5 miles from here out.
In Golden Meadow you can almost see the 50 limit with homes

Cast it out , immediately start twitching it with a sharp rod tip 'twitch'. Nothing big. Try it in clear water where you can see it a couple times, getting the hang of it is easy.
It runs 1-2 feet deep if retrieved correctly. My experience is 100% while IN THE SURF.
Should be dynamite around the legs of your fav oil platform as well. Hint Hint

Soon as the winds subside to sustained under 15 for a couple of days and the seas are under 4 feet, I'll let you know. Not looking too good for the next 5 + days.
Its that time of year again when we get the beach bug.
Using my spare time to go thru tackle, beach cart, etc. Should be a great season.

Remove the Mississippi River levees from Myrtle Grove area and southward.
The marsh will rebuild, New Orleans will never flood again.
Feds should buy out the landowners involved, make the entire area a National Wildlife Preserve.
Problems solved.
None of our current problems started until we built levees. Why did we build them south of Belle Chase ? Population density there , and south of there, doesn't warrant the negative outcomes we experience because of the levees.
DONT remove the levees & by 2050 there wont be any marsh in this area, and only a battered road to what was once Venice.
Controversial to say the least, but in the world according to ME ? I'd bulldoze the levees. Should have been done long ago, in my opinion.
Please,no emails. Its just my opinion.

What part of Texas were you in?
I'd guess 135-140. Its very hard to hit 145+ with an 8 point. Thats a very nice deer nonetheless for anyone in any area.
Once you have it scored please reactivate this thread to let us know the real score. Thanks.

When I post reports I always give a general area. If you want more specifics, send me a check by mail..NO ONE has ever brought me to their fav spots, its always been the other way around. If you cant find trout/reds in La with a boat, me helping you wont work either. It aint hard.

If you have a smaller boat (22 ft & under) take Dead Woman Pass or Flatboat Pass to the Main Pass rig area.
All I have heard about Main Pass is getting stuck. Same with Pass a Loutre' , you must go very frequently to know the safe routes. I have a camp on Pass A Loutre and its challenging for me to navigate it .
