To all of us strange people that still go to 'The Pointe'. You don't need to go far. Go from 1st to second lake and turn right. Fish that whole shore and run through third lake down to Battleground to finish in reds. The trout are nice and everywhere. No WLF enforcement, but doing research on your catch. Beshels store is back up, no fuel, but beer.Tell Robert, Duttie, and Brian 'Hi'.

Has anyone heard from or knows what is going on with Capt. Solar? I enjoy his book so much when I can't fish.
Thanks

I have an ad on the site for a boat, motor, and trailer. I have had 6 calls, 6 discussions with directions and 6 no shows. What happened to common courtesy? I am completely disappointed in the 'me,just me' generation and will be glad to be gone from the planet when they only have each other. I remember the post of a guy that saw fish all day long on his new fishfinder and did not catch one. His question was should he return the fishfinder. Many will understand what I speak of and many will ask did he get full refund?

I was out fishing near the Conservation Camp in north Bay Gardene Sat around noon. Out of nowhere an armada of ten boats approached. Party barges with port-a-cans,flat boats, push boats, rental boats and you name it. Some beached and ran on to the east side of the island. Four ventured into a broken through area of the island and got stuck. My partner and I reeled up and watched for 45 minutes as they threw mud ravaging the area and killed our fishing. They left as quickly as they came. Does anyone have any idea what this was about or what they could have possibly been doing?
Thanks

Anyone heard on Tony or Jimmy getting back to selling live shrimp?

September 24, 2010 at 9:42pm

Does anyone have any knowledge or Plaquemines parish contacts as to how long they intend to keep the diversions open on the east side? it seems to be more fresh every trip. Thanks for any info.

Guys,
The US Coast Guard now offers a free check of your boat. It is called a VSC, Vessel safety check. They go over your boat bow-stern and you will not fail. They will give you pointers for free on how to make your rig safer. You will get a sticker to go near your reg numbers. With any luck the LDWF will see that you have had a CG inspection and will only want to see fish and jackets. It takes about 20 minutes and these guys are great. Please e-mail with any questions. This is a great opportunity for all.

Just wanted to let everyone know that if you need any fiberglass or gelcoat repairs in the Baton Rouge area. Call Mr. Bill Beatty at 225.791.0666 He is in Denham Springs. If you decide to tackle the job yourself, he can give you information and will sell you the necessary materials. He is very talented. I saw him transform an inboard into a twin outboard. Very honest, dependable person. I just bought supplies from him and he came to BR to save me the drive.

Does anyone know of a source for a good duck bill for a pushpole that will not corrode? I'm looking for one that might be galvanized,or stainless. I'm just tired of these cheap ones. I've cold galved and they just don't last in a salty environment. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Had a great weekend fishing Pointe a la Hache. Caught some really nice 18-20 inch trout. If you have never tried Bait-Buddies, you should. After about 4 hours, dropped in the tablets and you would think you had shrimp on cocaine. They were jumping all over and hard to put on a hook. Picked them up at Academy. Good price and well worth it for a long day on the water.

The WDF has a shrimp closure for 7/11. As much as I have read their site, I'm still lost. Can anyone tell me if I can legally pull my trawl to catch some bait at Pointe a la Hache and Breton Sound? Thanks!!!

July 09, 2009 at 6:36pm

Fished Pointe a la Hache Friday with live shrimp. Ran out to Stone Island,10 boats on the south side ,no bent rods.
Went to the west end and got on a slow bite. Pulled in 6 trout around 15-17". Another boat pulled in nearby, caught zip, and left. Ran back to Belle Island, picked up a few. Total catch 14. The river is still up and the water does not improve until Belle. Had some good reports from Bay Gardene, but otherwise, everyone burnt gas riding, from spot to spot passing those that left where they were going. The fish were nice and a good indicator of a great season to come, once the river drops.

Can anyone tell me if the Manchac Lighthouse is still standing? Did it survive the storms? It has always been one of my daughters favorite places and I would like to run out there again. Any help would be appreciated

It seemed like anybody that had a rod showed up at Beshels in Pointe a La Hache Sat.am It was a great day to fish and I think most people caught a lot of trout. The hard falling tide caught some out plowing marsh. Gustav has made some changes. The reason I'm posting is that the Coast Guard offers a vessel safety check which is free. They inspect your boat and give you a sticker which is good for that year. They will come to you or you can meet them half way. This is a great service. When WLF pulls up and sees that the Feds have checked you they will probably just want to see your fish and you will really learn how to become a safer boater. http://www.safetyseal.net/GetVSC/ is the link to the site. I had my boat inspected Friday by Ken Munson of the Coast Guard Auxilary. I passed and was given some great ideas on how to make my rig even better. He was very reasonable and knowlegable. I highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity.

Does anyone know of a commercial food to feed bass when stocking a lake. A friend is trying to stock his pond and has had good results with feeding them minnows and small bream, which he catches in a nearby creek. They don't seem to want dry dog food and he is looking for a product he can buy to feed them on a regular basis. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A comment titled: Ok I'm in!! in response to a report titled: Overfishing speckled trout

I have fished Pointe a la Hache for over a decade. When I first started, 3-4 miles out, the local partner, that had grown up there, said he would ride his bike to the same area and catch bass as a kid. Yes, things have changed. My favorite, Telegraph point, is long gone and I actually watched the Pelicans fight over it the last few days. The oyster guys, finished it off. You can run over it all day long with your depth finder, but its over.
What I would like to add is that the Pointe is known for quantity, not size. I may, but normally don't limit out on trout. If 40 for two, it is a good day. Depending on the tides and conditions, I target the trout and a redfish limit is easy.
I have been chased by guides from the westbank, and this gets old. I understand they have a job to fulfill their limits. This has happened several times,I'm off in some unknown internet, undiscussed location and they come in on top of my bite. I am not against them doing there job, until they bother me. One guy, I just had to let him run behind me until he ran out of water. Later dude and circled back to my spot.
I think 99% of guides are great people and conservationist. Some of these 'boat runners' are idiots. The current limits are fine. The trout population is good. We have had strange weather to our diminishing estuary and the siphons can not recover from the last 1000 years.
Just my two cents.

Second Lake,Oak River, Battleground Bay. Salinities were way up, water clarity so, so, but the trout are everywhere. More ratred throw backs than specs. No limits, but nice mess of trout and reds. Great time on the water together. Priceless

Thanks guys,..pretty much what I expected. The lack of immenities, is I guess why I like going there. Any signs of Robert or the Harbor master?
My only concerns would be back to the post Katrina days of zero security when nobody was around and all your stuff left at launch would disappear. Any thoughts?.. Guess I'll make some calls.

I heard today that power is restored. May still be having drinking water issues. Beshels is wiped out. Don't know if the launch is cleared. You can get in via Belle Chasse ferry, but also heard land ownership verification was asked. Would appreciate any other information, as I would like to go down there soon myself.

What I like most about fishing the point is the solitude. You are forced to bring what you need because you never know what may be available. Very old school. We have people that run in from Delecroix, we have guides that come from Buras and that's fine with me. The only time we have a crowd is the weekend after the latest Sportsman article. Sowhat. I love the people and the place and always do well fishing. To me, it is a place to go relax, enjoy the time with your partners, and catch fish. I savor the fact that 157 channels at the lodge are not available and they are so hard to see with $200 Costa sunglasses.Guess its just a different bread that thinks gear catches fish, WRONG!!!

Thanks and good story! My standard routine is call Miss Dudey (she did marry Brian after the storm) and get the scoup. Usually get my shrimp at Bait Inc for a start. I usually fish several days at a time. Funny you mention Telegraph. They oyster guys have drug it down quite a bit. The first time I fished the Pointe in 2001, I pulled my first trout (25') at Telegraph and was hooked. After the storm, I actually watched pelicans battle over what was left and over the weekend saw it disappear.

Thanks for the good report, which was the issue in the first place. Are they getting shrimp or just minnows. We had a camp on Billy Hingles place, now we just camp out with the cows. I still love every moment I spend down there, which is why I take offense to unwarranted attacks. Its not for everyone, but for me it is.Spechaser

I'm just curious which owner you are referring to as a drunk. Neal or Don Beshel, the former plaquemines parish councilman. There are two owners, so clue us in to which one is the drunk.

Thanks so much for that report. I fish that area exclusively. Although Stone stays on the top for articles, it has been completely different since Katrina. I always pull up to see many boats with unbent rods and have done better on the other (NW) side which is deeper. I think you are onto something about the early bite. Where do you run out of?
Thanks

Coon,
I'm with you on the 'dreamers'. Great point! The sport of fishing is so much about knowledge. Your catch is in no way related to your purchases. Yes, you need a rod, reel and hook. Sunglasses, clothing and all the great marketable goodies do not put fish in the ice chest. Dreamers keep Academy in business. They have no idea of self sufficiency. I remember helping some friends with gator fishing. We loaded my boat with 15 while they ran remaining lines to get another dozen.I threw my cast net, caught 4 shrimp and and landed two reds waiting on em.Dreamer would be on cell tryin to get back to marina! LOL Thanks

After several more no shows and running the ad for a month, finally found a buyer. I was in Kentucky when I received his call. I explained I would be back Thursday. Thurs pm he called back to get directions and asked what size trailer ball and if a notary was nearby. He said he would be there at 630, which he was. Checked it out, fired motor and made our deal. After a small notary glitch, being so late, he was on his way just after dark. Common courtesy is a two way street, and I guess I'm guilty of giving everyone the benefit of the doubt.
