One of the most used canals in Lafitte is now posted with blue barrels across the canal. This canal is used by fisherman and others when you want to enter a area called 2 Pilling canal. It is also a back way to lake Salvador when you have a strong south wind. I see no lights on these barrels if someone hits them could be a bad accident. This canal has been opened for many years and sure has a strong tide flow.

Every where you go you see billion being spent on land recovery in our Louisiana marsh. From Joe's landing South you have a area that was filled in for a subdivision several years ago. This runs for about half mile and has the best Roseau canes you ever saw and willow trees as tall as oaks. Would be a great idea to find out how this guy did the job that we are spending billions to do.

I was fishing Christmas eve with my two sons and one caught a red fish. Using the formula like the article did about the big red ours was 68 pounds. With grand kids and Christmas we had to let him and the record go. Nice fish the fisherman caught in Venice

Seems like now when I go fishing more noise than in downtown New Orleans on a Holiday. Air boats by the ton and pro drives by the millions. These boats make a lot of noise and I am a old fort with a hearing problem. Then you have the Air force training right over the area. We are only a few miles from the gulf why do they have to test over Lafitte is a question I would like to know. Guess we will all need some type of ear protection soon.

Please note you have seen very few post about a bass being caught but when they start to bed you will see post after post how easy it is to catch bass. Grew up as a kid that loved to fish City Park and they closed the park during the bedding season. I have seen people snag them off the ness many times. So glad that for many years we as kids and then young men with kids had city park for some great bass fishing and the closing was the main reason.

Last Friday with 9 grandkids and 3 sons we went fishing in Lafitte. While fishing for trout my son hooked this red and about a half hour or more he landed it. The boys did the math and came up with 68 pounds of red fish. With 9 hungry kids and Santa on the way no time to get official with scale etc. So we put him back would like to have seen his ture weight. Been fishing for over 70 years and biggest red I ever saw.

December 26, 2016 at 11:36pm

Red fish are hitting shad like bass in the Lake Salavadore area. Plenty of boats and reds use a heavy spoon so you can get distance to school.

Years ago they pumped lake mud into the area between interstate and lake. Driving home this week this area now looks great with grass and trees and no water. Seems like this project worked well if land is what they wanted.

August 30, 2016 at 7:17am

Good news and bad news of bass fishing. Good news the shad spawn is on and bad news never the same spot. Two at time when you find them.

If you take a boat ride around Lafitte you will see all kinds of coastal restoration projects from rocks, to walls and now a drag line is working across from C Way Marina. This a good idea but it is also the middle of the storm season why was this work not done in the fall then you have had all summer for the grass and trees to grow so if you get a storm damage would not be so bad. I see all the hype about the reefs but seldom if ever see any reports of people fishing and catching from them. To make my case one was built in Sulphur Mind years ago and don't think anyone even knows where it is now. This use to be the best winter fishing spot in the coast but started to fill in. Now do you think it better to take a drag line and keep that deep hole and use to the dirt to build a ridge or built a reef that holds no fish and no one knows where it is der.

July 18, 2016 at 7:56am

I was trying to cool off today after fishing an took a boat ride to the intercoastal area between Perot and the marsh is growing like the jungles of S. American then you go south and looks like the start of desert with dirt showing up all over the shore line. DER WHERE DO YOU THINK THE SALT WATER IS.

If Congressman Garret Graves' bill one day becomes law and the Gulf states will manage their red snapper fishery the price tag for Year 1 in Louisiana will be $10,039,000, according to the LDWF. I am sure with that kind of cost you could outsource it for one dollar less lol

July 08, 2016 at 10:18am

As i fish around Lafitte I see a ton of coastal restoration projects but little are no news from anyone on what is going on. Last week I saw a drag line across from SeaWay working. They seem to be working on building some type of ridge as the mud is being pilled high. What is the over all plan does anyone know even heard a rumor last week they plan to put a golf course in the area lol

Taking my 3 sons and now 9 grand kids fishing was always a problem as I had to run the trolling motor and was unable to watch the kids. Now with the new trolling motor those problems are in the past. The new trolling motor picks up and lowers and you can do all actions with a remote. Now I stay in the back or drivers seat and run the boat and can keep kids in plane view for any problems. This trolling motor is price less when fishing with kids.

I moved to BR about 43 years ago and was made fun of by most of the local fisherman who were all bass fisherman. Said my equipment was a joke as you need 5ft 2 rods for accuracy in bass fishing. These same guys now almost all fish saltwater about half still hold bass number one.

Last week we had the grandkids over and took them saltwater fishing and it was every cast with live bait. Then the kids wanted to catch those big bass we had been posting. It did not take them long to understand bass fishing is so different than saltwater. One casting and equipment is more important in bass fishing. The kids worked at using the Shimano reels and caught some great bass.

As a retired guide the average fisherman gets turned off on bass fishing quick as the grass and casting can get old fast. TB is now getting a lot of talk about how great fishing is you can bet the good days will come with a lot of casting and time on the water. Saltwater is the way to go with fisherman and grandkids that want to catch fish. PS The grandkids after some boring times learned to like bass fishing after we got on a great pattern of catching boy was I glad.

June 21, 2016 at 2:31pm

Guess I must be one of the old forts that catch more fish today then any time in my 70plus years of fishing. I can remember when we did not have a trolling motor. We just purchased the new one with all the bells and whistles and one of the main features is the anchor button. Just hit the button you boat stays in place. This is so great when you catch a fish or when the grandkids have a problem. Today I got on a school of bass and put the button on anchor and it was so much fun not having to worry about the anchor or power pole.

June 10, 2016 at 6:00pm

Braid was the answer to that over run on spinning rod and reels and great for cork and free lining live bait. It also cast great on my casting reels but it is a pain with a stopping jerk. Happens when you try to get extra distance or after you catch a good fish. I have tried oil and wetting line still get that over run not a true back lash but a reel problem with light baits also. I have tried them all. It cast a mile and can pull a red or big bass out of that grass like noting else. Seems like in fishing this is always a good and bad picture lol.

Two endangered whooping cranes released into the wild in December were shot and killed last month south of Rayne in Acadia Parish.

I grew up when everyone used live shrimp. Then we got the Shad Rig and the plastic game started. Most people don't understand the word is live. One never use a jig with a live shrimp. Let the shrimp swim and if you have it rigged right a shrimp can keep away from a catfish. You can keep the shrimp live by keep the water cool use a frozen bottle in the water. Next use water that you get your shrimp in never put water around the marina in your live well. Gas and fresh water kill them fast. When you reach your fishing area then put your live well into action. Next use a net and never use your hands with sun screen or bug protection on them. Keep your bait live and you will catch a lot more fish. This was proven this week end where the live bait boys were killing the trout and the plastic gang were not water was stained.

Agree but back then GCCA was made up of week end fisherman and some of them were very powerful in La. and i remember hearing we know who to use as lobbyist to get this passed. Guys like James Wilson worked so hard and meeting were held all over the area. The gill netters were not to nice to some of these fisherman. I feel now that the only way to get his done is our vote as the power boys seem now to have the key to the gates. Our vote can take that key away from them then the posted signs will come down. Thanks for your effort and I am for you 100 percent. PS My meeting was at the bait shop on the old river road in Kenner James is now fishing in haven but he was a hard worker for the fisherman.

I will take picture and give GPS numbers. Where is the CCA and the local fishing show host and best of all our elected official that look out for us. You would think the marine dealers and bait shops would be all over this in the media.

Best we have spend millions in that area building a wall and rock dam to built up this land. If this had not been done this posted area would now be a lake.

Think it would be a waste of time unless you want to run about 20 miles South fish all the time and never see a shrimp boat with his nets in the water.

Until about 5 years ago I though I knew every thing about Bass fishing. Then I started to watch the pro's on youtube and have caught more bass in the last 5 years than the 75 years before. Bass unlike Spec. are always in the area we fish. These bass pro's have shown me how to catch them in ways I never tried. Never to old to learn and as a kid never though I would learn how to fish from my TV lol. PS It is a little hard on my pocket book but believe me worth every penny if you like to catch bass.

August 13 at 1:24pm

So right Rocknet about the bass fishing. In Lafitte we have never had bass fishing so good and bigger than ever. The John Curtis rodeo seldom has a 2 pounder to win this year almost 5 and this is not your top pro bass guys lol

July 05 at 2:26pm

Maybe catch and release works. Only last year the Bend was rated number one right. Then the gang showed up to fill the freezer during the spawn. I heard roamers of camp owners catching several limits a day. Now TB is no longer in the top 10 of bass lakes. I think facts and results speak for them self. There are no camps and cleaning stations on Sam Rayburn and it jumped to number 4. But there will be sportsman that say no way catch and release works right.

July 05 at 2:14pm

I just paid 1.82 for gas. These same idiots said we would be paying 10 dollars and run our in a few years lol

July 05 at 2:09pm

The boys called it up on cell phone it est weight was 68 pounds which would have been a La. state record. Took almost an hour to land

June 20 at 10:41am

Does catch and release work and does pressure hurt bass fishing. Last week the Bass masters elite held a tournament on Sam Rayburn and every contestant over 100 had a limit with a 3 pound average. Sam Rayburn is a lake that has no camps on the lake and no cleaning stations. I have friends and sons that fish it all the time an catch record numbers of bass. they say little pressure and no one keeps bass almost a catch release lake. Camp owners and guide from TB are going to Sam Rayburn. I think these facts talk for them self

May 29 at 7:41am

No better place than TB when it is right with spring weather great catch. My son lived on the Bend when he coached at Many HS. After the spring it gets hard in the summer it is so hot and then after Thanksgiving it can get down right Alaska like.

April 13 at 12:26pm

Again we see the new idea catch 5 fish and then look for the kicker. TB winner even said he would not go to where he caught some big fish and would fish the place he knew he could catch fish.
