This picture is of a pond on our lease with Salvania in it.
This stuff showed up 3 years ago that we noticed. It was there one weekend and all drained through water control a few weeks later.

Last year it took over 1/2 the open water on our lease.

This year it has gotten about 3/4 so far.

I have never seem something like this before. We poison, put weevils, push some with homemade rakes hooked to boats and the little we do either is not fast enough or short lived. I mean it was on the lease next to us one year, then ours the next then 5 or 6 leases around area now. You can go one weekend and have a pad of this floating in a pond and go back 3 weeks later and the pond will be slap full.

Just Depressing to see this take over. OH and last year it seemed if you had this in even just 1/4 of the pond, the ducks would pass and circle and circle and leave.

Need some advice on rabbit hunting. I have about 15 acres where I live. Some of it has about 3ft thick grass. There are rabbit holes all over. Little trails cross crossing throughout and rabbit poo all around. I walked it 2 or 3 times trying to jump rabbits but haven't seen any. There is woods nearby that's holding coy dogs which I assumed May be killing them but I still see a good bit of signs. Patches of bushes with holes in it , holes in ground, poop, tracks. Just haven't actually seen rabbits. Any thoughts. I hunt ducks majority of the year and never really rabbit hunted much. So any advice would be appreciated.

Awesome hunt today. More birds down. Should be good last 2 weeks. Been doing pretty good lately just have to work a little for them.

Need some advice from you guys. I hunt a lease and some public land. Lease has been hit or miss. Did really good last weekened on public. This past weekened and today we saw a lot of Greys flying high on both property's. Blow duck call and they keep on moving. Don't blow call and they keep on moving. Duck weed growing in ponds. Seems like all good conditions. We put out 2 to 3 dozen decoys on lease and had only put a dozen on public trying to save wieght in pirouge for the long hike to this remote area. Do you think it's just normal or need more decoys when windy and cloudy like last 3 days? I've been a hardcore duck hunter since I was 7 or 8 years old. Always hunted marsh and never really used more than 3 dozen decoys. Just wanted to see others opinion or if any face same thing. Not sure if it's new birds comming in riding wind, old birds going from one sanctuary to another, ducks preference if pond size on those cloudy windy days, or if I'm just doing something wrong. Any thought are welcomed.

Its crazy how the last 4 or 5 years ive noticed not a single teal in the marsh before teal season, however opening morning we normally get a slow limit. But if you ride around after about 9 am you will not see a single teal sitting on the water or flying anywhere. I guess they just pass through at daybreak which they are notorious for. Anyway a hunt with or without a kill is still way better than work.

September 09, 2013 at 7:15am

Man saturday the big flocks of green wing were comming right in decoys. 1rst flock we got exited and dropped 6. after that we starting trying to catch side birds. We ended morning with 4 man limit by 8:00am. 2 greys, 1 green head, rest teal. Next day we shot 6 birds 2 people. WOW what a differance wind can make.

Is attakapas good for hunting waterfowl. Its the closest area from where i live in vermillion parish. There are alot of public land oppurtunities from morgan city to mississippi but not much from vermillion to texas. I will start hunting public land until i find another lease. My family just bought some land near catahoula lake up agaist dewey wills. I will try that as well but i would like to find something closer for week day hunts.

October 25, 2012 at 11:05am

lost lease this year to a company who was willing to pay alot moreso they could take there customers. Lease holder also hunted with us along with another lease he had. His other lease has been great last few years and ours not to great. Well last year we had a phenominal year and his other lease sucked. So now he wants the lease to himself with the company. Probally stay there till there rich A#$#$ have a bad year then move on to another poor person lease and have them booted. It was good while it lasted. I will start looking very hard towards end of duck season for a lease next year. I guess that is how it goes.

October 23, 2012 at 4:39pm

We just recently bought some property up agaist dewey will WMA and are building a camp right now. Should be complete mid november. I was wondering if ducks casn be killed in the flooded timber there. I will try to hunt that as well as deer until i can get a spot in the Lake if ever possible. Any advice on hunting ducks are deer on dewey wills. Dont need specific spots, i will scout a bit as i can. i will be more prepared next year once camp is finished and we dont have to drive up there every morning.

Still killing limits near vermillion bay. i dont get in marsh till 8 or 9 and hunt till 12 or 1. We are killing a few ducks in ponds with blinds but i have been doing great in ponds/pot holes/ and wide mudboat ditches with 4 decoys at most. I had 3 guys with me friday. i put them 200 yards apart in grass next to mud boat ditch that is about 100 ft wide. Got there at 8 and all 4 of us were done about 11 with a total of 8 green wing and 16 greys. Ducks are still here. you just have to change your tactics up.

We have a lake that no one on our lease ever wants to hunt because they say it sucks. The last 2 years i go there on last weekend and sit on a edge of the lake whereever the coots are hanging at. We limit out last 2 days last 2 years using same tactic.

i need help with my dog. She picks up all my ducks in water. when a duck falls in grass she will go where duck is and sniff right up to it but will not pick it up. Any advice on how i fix this would help.

This morning i shot bird that fell about 50 yards behind blind in grass. she jump out blind put nose down and ran right to a certain area and stayed there 2 or 3 minutes then came back with nothing. My buddy came with his dog and his dog took a little longer and wound up going to same spot my dog sniffed at for those 2 or 3 minutes and picked up a bird. This happens often and i cant firgure how to break her of it.

August 02, 2011 at 6:13pm

Any body see the new steel shot thats comming out. Spectra shot. BBs are colored. I mean like blue, green, black, yellow and so on. Purpose of color is to see who killed what when you hunt with a few people. Also its supposed to be as good as black cloud. Soon will see about that. Seems like a good idea. You can even get LSU colors. The things they come out with.

A comment titled: Re: Salvania in response to a report titled: Salvania

Well it kills all the vegetation under it, all fish leave area or die if they cant leave being it sucks all the oxygen out the water, and it plugs drainage canals. So maybe there is something good about it as mentioned, I just haven't seen that benefit yet. but we are all entitled to our opinion.

Yea, it seems the only way is as you mentioned about a storm killing it.

Everything we try is slower than the rate it grows.

This will be 2nd year we put weevils so hopefully it helps more.

A comment titled: combination in response to a report titled: Dare To Compare ???

I think is a combination of many different things we cant control and some we can.

I hunted a lease with my uncle from when i was 10 till 31 years old. The last 5 years i hunted with him i also had a small lease with some friends.

My uncles lease was phenomenal. We always did great and when we didn't it was really not that bad. I mean a great lease. He had been there for 32 years. In the first 10 years they killed mostly Mallards, Green Wing, and few other species. Last 20 years they would kill mostly greys and maybe 5 Mallards a year if that with some years none. But still did great because of all the Grey Ducks.

My little lease was a 2 maybe 4 bird per blind lease with many scratch days during the time i hunted with my Uncle.

His last 4 years on that lease got worse and worse till they were averaging 3 ducks per hunter when he was beat out by higher dollars. And those guys are saying this year was even worse than the last few.

Crazy thing is that my little lease got a little better every year while theirs was declining.

This year was the best year we've had on this lease to date. 5.65 average ducks per hunter.
Ive had my best hunt of all time on this lease last year. 3 people in one blind 9- green heads 3- mallard hens 2 pin-tail drakes 3- grey ducks 1- teal. We could have shot more mallards that day if we were outlaws but they were awesome to watch come in like they were.
Uncles Lease was 2000 acres 8 members
My lease is 783 acres 6 members
Both lease are hunted about same amount of people and days give or take.
Uncles Lease My Lease
Year 2007 1200 120
Year 2008 1023 196
Year 2009 1156 156
Year 2010 864 398
Year 2011 743 750
Year 2012 620 645
Year 2013 under 300 765

With that being said i think its a combination of things why some don't see ducks they used to and others do or why numbers are lower. Biggest i believe is human intervention which we are all culprits of in some way. Look how many weirs, dams, canals, mudboat ditches, locks, diversions,etc... we have now. This is changing our scenery and changing water, food, salinity, etc... from one area to another. Once great areas are not so great and few not so great area have benefited to become better. But i think overall and long term these things will contribute to coastal Louisiana having to go further North to hunt ducks. But hey god works in mysterious way, and things can keep changing like always. Sorry for long comment, but i really get into these things, its our area that we grew up in that we want our kids to enjoy the same things about outdoors we did. Anyway im no biologist or engineer by far and the above are just my thoughts.

A comment titled: Mallards in response to a report titled: What is the Strangest thing you have seen while Duck Hunting?

Man a couple weeks ago me and buddy had a flock of mallards zoom in right above decoys. Both shot and dropped 2 greenheads. Dog picks them up bring them in blind. Dead right!!! About 10 minutes later 1 of them got up and pretty much ran out one side of blind about 10 ft and into the water. GONE.. About 2 hours later when we were about to leave my dog kept going to grass at water line where duck went in and we kept looking. I remember about my grandpa telling me mallards will bury themselfs in the mud. Grass in our marsh is like pads of mud so I had the idea to pull grass back. When i looked down i thought i saw yellow mixed in with mud. Stuck hand in and sure enough, i come out with my greenhead. How wiered is that.

i have a mudbuddy and my hunting partner just boughht one also. Both 36hp. I love them. Im looking at sport v for my next one. I like all 4 surface drives. I just rather mudbuddy because the design looks cleaner. As someone just said it looks like more attention to detail was taken. Again i like all of them. I think they are all pretty cool.

A comment titled: MALLARDS in response to a report titled: Post some of the best duck hunts you have ever been on!

2010-2011 Season. Wensday January 5

All my lease members were busy and could not go, so i invited my 2 little cousins. Before shooting time we had 6 or 7 pair of Mallards come into decoys, and i remember saying man after shoot time we wont see anything. Boy was i wrong. We shot 9 greenheads, 3 hen mallards, 2 pintail drakes, 2 greys, 2 green wing. This is the only hunt i have ever been on that we limited out on Mallards. After we killed our limit we watched mallards come in to the decoys for almost another hour. The funny thin is, that we normally kill mabye 10 or 15 mallards the whole year if that. It was a great day with good people. Something that i will always remeber. I lost my phone about a week later with the pictures. Just amazing and memorable.

A comment titled: Thats SAD in response to a report titled: Thieves at McDonalds in Chalmette

Last year i stoped at a gas station in abbeville next to burger king. I had a icechest of drinks and food and another ice chest with bait with a few rods and gear. We were going spend weekend at the camp. Went inside to pay my gas. I left store and later arrived at the dock to realize no more icechest and no more poles. Should have stayed with the truck i guess, but same as you i have never had anything like that happen to me before so i didnt even think about it. By the way, the store had cameras but they were not working at the time. Go figure. Anyway, i think we all agree that times have changed when you have to pay attention to your things constanly to make sure they stay yours. Again sorry to hear about your situation, and what goes around comes around.

A comment titled: You Right in response to a report titled: Lost Lease

Yall are right. If i had good land for hunting purposes, i would want to get most money possible. So your right that you cant blame the land owners. It just sucks sometimes. The guy that leases to us has 3 or 4 leases just for ducks not including deer leases. He told me to my face that famous comment that duck hunting is for the rich and i was lucky to have it while i did. In the back of my mind, i agree but i was paying 2200 dollars a year for a membership in a marsh area with 6 other guys. the problem is that in 2 years it will double and in 4 years it will triple. I talked to a landowner in lake arthur who told me he had been leasing his property to a guy for 15 years. 200 acres for 5000 dollars at the end. Another fellow that hunted with the guy turned around and offered the landowner 15000 a year. I know what i would have done so i dont blame the landowner. So from this point forward thats what that land will go for and then the lease next to it and the next and so forth. So mabye i just need to make more money or go on 2 or 3 payed hunts a year, since the last thing i wanna do is find another hobby after doing this since i was 8 years old. Thats life. Sorry guys, im just ranting on blowing off steam.
