I plan on buying my daughter a new bolt action youth rifle. I would like to hear from people that actually have one what they think of their gun. I already have a rossi so no single shot recommendations. Does anyone have experience with the HOWA model Academy has. I want a gun she can hunt with the rest of her life now that I know she loves to hunt.

We are trying to put is a septic take at our hunting camp ,but I'm really confused. I have people telling me that you can't install your own tank I have to pay someone to do it. Also I called DEQ and they were not much help they said that they require at least a 750 gallon tank. Has anyone else dealt with this. We have a small camp on upland type terrain. Also does it have to be a true septic tank or can it be a several hundred gallon plastic tank.

We are trying to get water at our camp ,but drilling a well is to expensive. Has anyone ever drilled their own well or have any other suggestions. We do have electricity.

We may have to change the name of the hunting club to the Barbie Hunting Club after this weekend. We had three girls hunting, all killed their first deer. A 6pt and 2 does. All killed with Rossi .243 youth rifles. Needless to say it was a great weekend for us. My daughter is 8 and shot her does at 91 yards. My friend's daughters are 12 and 13 one shot her buck at 40 yards the other killed her doe at 80 yards. We hope we don't have to paint the posted signs pink!

I had posted a few weeks ago about problems getting a youth Rossi 243 to group. I finially figured out the problem. The end of the forearm past the stock screw was making contact with the barrel causing the gun to string the group. I put a small plactic sleeve about 1/4 inch thick over the screw and then tighten it down. This way it keeps the barrel and stock from making contact. After I did this the gun started grouping. I hope this helps those with the same problem.

I was trying to sight in a rossi youth .243 today and had trouble getting the gun to group. I thought it may be the scope and changed that to a scope I knew worked and still had to the same problem. I noticed that the barrel gets extremely hot after a few shots. After the gun cooled it shot to a different point. Has anyone had a similiar problem? I was planing on shooting it again Sat a couple of times then letting it cool and repeat the process with a cold barrel.

The rut is over on my lease and I had my meat for the year. So my family went to the smoky mountains after christmas. We saw about 70 deer of which 10 were good bucks. I got some good pictures of 5 of them. I love to watch deer and I thought someone else would like to see some of them.

January 05, 2006 at 7:40pm

Has anyone tried shooting a Barnes Expander MZ bullet or the newer spitzer version out of a CVA Optima. I've heard that depending on the gun manufacturer they may fit either to tight or too loss. Also has anyone shot either a deer or a hog with one and how did they perform.

I have tried to to plant sunflowers in our summer plots 2 acres the deer mowed them down as soon as they sprouted. So unless you don't have many deer or you plant a lot they will be gone.

A comment titled: not the corn in response to a report titled: Watch to feed?

This year our region has a very heavy acorn crop. Deer don't feed on corn very well when they acorns. I talked to several friends in different clubs and they are all having this problem. When the acorns are gone in a few weeks the deer will get back on the feeders.

A comment titled: distance in response to a report titled: Fixed the Rossi

I was shooting the gun at 50 yards. Both places my daughter will hunt the shots will be within that distance. I wanted to up her odds. I agree that the barrels are #$@!(@ for the.243. Even with the fix I still don't believe the gun is "tack driver" ,but after I fixed it the first 3 shots were touching then it started to open up some. I think at 50 yards you can expect to keep the shots within 1 inch of center. I love the .22 barrel and it shots great. The thing I like about the gun is I can train her on the .22 with the same trigger and action ,but with no recoil or muzzle blast. Like I said if she keeps hunting I will get her a serious deer rifle. As far As exactly how I fixed it . I have a semi rigid plastic sleeve that the hole will just fit over the screw in the stock. I then put the stock back on and screwed it down till tight, but paper will still pass between the barrel. It really just a plastic washer/spacer. I really hopes this works for those with the same problem.

A comment titled: sanding in response to a report titled: Fixed the Rossi

I thought about sanding the inside of the forearm ,but I fixed it at the camp and didn't have anything that would do the job correctly. Thats when I found the plastic sleeve. I will probably sand it down after the season. Also after about 4 shots the barrels gets to hot and the group opens up. So after 3 shots I would put the gun down and leave it about 20 minutes till it cooled. I hope my daughter gets a chance to use it this weekend on a deer.

A comment titled: yes in response to a report titled: HOGS

I called wildlife and fish about the same question two years ago. You can hunt hogs year round with a rifle ,but if small game season is open and deer gun season is not you can not have buckshot or slugs for a shotgun.

A comment titled: today in response to a report titled: rossi youth rifle

Nosler partition were not the answer. One shot would perfect the next shot 4 to 5 inches low then the next shot would be perfect. This went on for 6 shots till I quit.Funny thing was the shot were all inline left to right it just strung the shots up and down. I'll try winchester or remington ammo to see it that help. Has anyone tried a sims barrel vibration reducer.

A comment titled: ammo in response to a report titled: rossi youth rifle

I'm going to use federal nosler patitions tomorrow. I used federal boatails the other day. I'll post Sunday how the shooting goes tomorrow. My little girl gets to rabbit hunt tomorrow for the first time. I've waited all her life for this.

I found a web site that lists tides for Lake Ponchartrain at the Tchefuncta River and Bayou Bonfouca.
www.tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/tides06/tab2ec4.html#108.
From the Parish Road Bridge tide times it is more like 5 hours difference. Hope this helps some of you lake fisherman.

A comment titled: you better like crabs in response to a report titled: any one know about grand isle

We fished the surf Thur-Sat and didn't catch a trout. We did catch some under sized reds. The surf was calm and lots of bait just no fish. The crabs were thick. We caught 54 nice crabs in 25 minutes of a 20 ft line with 10 baits. The only person I saw with any fish in the surf was one guy with about 12 trout he caught at the state park.
