Bad weather & high winds = no reports... so putting this out there!

Requesting ANY AND ALL input both positive and/or negative relative to the Minn Kota Saltwater/Riptide (Ulterra?) I-Pilot (36V w/60' shaft) with ALL THE BELLS/WHISTLES (handheld remote vs foot control AND the Auto Deploy/Stow features). I do realize that with these troll motors in 'anchor'/Spotlock' feature that the bow will always be into the wind and should stray from side to side due to both tide and winds.

ALSO...what about the 'Auto Deploy/Stow' feature?

We troll the MRGO, Trestles, Rocks, etc and wondering if having the foot control would give more 'hands-free' time as compared to constantly positioning with the remote!

We realize that the guides for the most part like the handheld remote due to the fact that they are assisting their client s and keeping them on the fish.

ANY/ALL INPUT WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED...John Castelluccio, Jr.

ORIGINAL QUESTION----

MY ORIGINAL QUESTION: Which tidal conditions, incoming vs dropping combined with wind direction of less than 10 mph IS BEST for fishing the surf, whether from boat or standing the surf? Are tide predictions for Caminada Bridge combined with moon phase ALL are players in fishing Elmer's???

Hoping for lots of experienced suggestions/answers. Thanks, John C.

I purchased (2006) my custom made all aluminum and SS trailer from Sport-Trailer Trailer Co., located on old Hwy. 90 in Bay St. Louis, MS. Someone hit my trailer in the Bonnabel parking lot two weeks ago...damaging the left metal upright-guide pole and the U-bolted bracket! I made an appointment with the owner of Sport-Trail Trailers-Kevin Desalles and brought it in yesterday morning. A new bracket was welded on, BOTH metal uprights were replaced, LIKEWISE ALL four of the U- bolts, nuts and washers. They inspected my trailer, tongue assembly (under, around and over) and found a stress fracture in the step-up next to the fender and welded that. Accompanied Kevin into his office, he handed me two t-shirts and AND he apologized that there was not enough time (11:00am employees' lunch time) to lift my boat off the trailer so as to chemically-wash my trailer as a courtesy . I was gratefully surprised at what he 'charged' and a handshake. SPORT-TRAIL TRAILER CO. is doubling it's size AND will be the 'official' trailer manufacturer for BLAZER BAY BOATS located in Pensacola, FL

Took my boat into Pontchartrain - shakedown for trip to Grand Isle this weekend. Noticed GPS unit with flashing message...\'HIGH VOLTAGE INPUT\' and then noticed my Yamaha instrument gauge showing 17.4 - 17.6 volts while running 4000 rpms. Stopped boat put motor into neutral and instrument gauge showd 13.6 - 14.0 volts. I was seriously concerned that the over charging could cause the battery to explode and/or damage something else---instruments, gps, motor, etc. I called a few mechanics and one asked if battery was bad or very old...NO! Battery is less than 2 years old and I charge it on trickle charge after every trip. Now I am wondering if I have overcharged/damaged the startup battery. My motor is a 2006 Yamaha ZR200TRX HPDI. Does anyone have any input and/or related/similar experiences??? Thanks, John Castelluccio, Jr.

The few marine mechanics I have talked to including lawn equipment repairmen ALL AGREE...STAY AWAY FROM E-10 FUELS. Most marine/lawn care engines are not equiped to handle ethanol through rubber hoses and/or rubber/plastic components of fuel systems...especially all older carbeurated engines! This also applies to compressors, generators, welding machines, etc...!!! With ethanol fuels, not filled tank---the more room for moisture/water and octane loss. Less wear/tear on trailer because of less weight DOES NOT OUT WEIGH a blown engine trying to burn/compress water in the cylinder/piston heads. If you have a four stroke engine, depending on horsepower---you are 'always carrying around' 40lbs to 150lbs more weight than older engines and/or 2 STROKE HPDI engines! John Castelluccio, Jr. ps...if you are fishing the Hopedale/Shell Beach/Delacroix areas...you are passing five non-ethanol stations excluding the 3 marinas which all sell non-ethanol fuels, though $.20-$.30 more per gallon. Westside of river...passing at least three non-ethanol stations. IS IT WORTH THE CHANCE!?!?!???

Today, Thursday, while in Chalmette (Pellegrini's Barber Shop) observed many, many boats being trailered OUT from lower St. Bernard...possibly the marina operators advised those in sheds/slips to remove due to liability issues?!?!

I totally endorse the preceding statement and stand by the statement...I (we) will do so everytime while in a boat (yours/mine) whether moving or not!!! John Castelluccio, Jr.

A LAW IS A LAW...'...rules will be broken...'!!! Pay the price. THE difference between the PFD labeled Auto/Manual vs HIT: The Auto/Manual deploys after a wafer type disc (alka selza?) dissolves and it deploys---this is the reason manyinadvertentingly open while instorage after constant exposure to water even constant wave spray and even washing with a hose PLUS it can be deployed manually IF YOU ARE CONSCIOUS after going overboard (either fall and/or ejection).

The HIT is hydrostatically based by pressure NOT BY BEING WET. SUPPOSEDLY, after the device is under water for a mere two seconds (a change in pressure)...it then deploys.

A classic example of the HIT PDF's being worn is the PDF's worn by crewmembers of the series DEADLIEST CATCH...constantly wet for hours at a time and no deployment. The only time I saw one deployed was when a crew member (Lenny) was knocked down/floored by a hugh wave, he slipped on deck and was pushed while underwater from starboard to portside...the HIT PDF deployed.

YES, I agree they are expensive...$239.-$259. on line! Since developing Vertigo from an auto accident in 2006, my daughters bought me my first HIT vest...very comfortable! Now my girlfriend has been making many trips with me to Black Bay, Breton Sound, etc...she asked me after gearing up at the dock and putting on my HIT...she asked me if I had another and said 'NO' and then she hit me with...Do you love yourself more than me? THAT PUT THE VALUE OF MY LIFE AND THOSE I LOVE INTO TRUE PERSPECTIVE...I NOW OWN THREE HIT PDF's and keep them in the boat at all times. I insist that all who fish with me wear them...John Castelluccio, Jr.

Check the LWLD website to see if the ban has been lifted...BUT, for the poast several weeks...crabbing from Elmer's has been prohibited by the Louisiana Wildlife Dept. DUE TO SEVERAL TARBALLS COMING ASHORE. We all have to thank BP for using 'Correxit' to hide the unknown amount of oil they spilled---which this State will suffer from their irresponsible acts for many more years to follow...John Castelluccio, Jr.

First time posting here. Was in Gus' Tackle Shop over the weekend. Overheard some converstations about fish being caught in the Lakeshore area. Went this morning, fished from 6:45AM until around 11:00AM...caught 11 very nice trout on the Hybrid Flurry "Full Throttle", SWA "Opening Night" and even on the Salt and Pepper. Went solo, launched at The Dock and only burned maybe two gallons. Nice and easy trip. Saw three other boats in the canal and very light boat traffic!

Contact 'B&J Seafood' on Paris Rd. in Chalmette, LA and/or 'Today's Catch' on E. Judge Perez Hwy., Chalmette, LA! You will probably have to pass both when driving to Delacroix.

EVERYBODY has their BEST BOAT!

Consider Avenger Bay Boats originally ('Team Avenger' Custom Bay Boats in St. Bernard Parish, relocated to Venice, LA and NOW located in South Carolina as 'Avenger Bay Boats'! Many charter-guides in Lafitte, LA ran these boats in the late 1980's to present; likewise charter guides in Venice, LA from 2006 to present. I received mine (226 Dual console) completely custom-made to what I wanted from several given options! Today, these boats have been updated to modern expectations...'fit and finish.
