the deer in old area 6, now area 9 did not rut at the usual time. we hunt near cow island lake. the rut usually happens the last few days of the year into the new year.
does anyone have a report (date) of rutting activity they observed this year in this area?

i have a 250 acre lease that has been in our family for 40 years. we butt up against two other lease with no problems with these clubs. on the other side, we butt up against public land. i set up a 2 man stand for me and my 6 year old son before hunting season, well on my property. after hunting 2 weekends ago, i rode my 4 wheeler down a cut that we made down the property line that butts up against the public land. the cut was made about 12 years ago, but you can clearly tell that its a division. it was done with an industrial size bulldozer. while riding, i found a permanent blind on the public land with a 30 yard shooting lane with a food plot planted on my cut tree line dividing my lease from public land. i then realize that his shooting lane is pointing directly at my new ladder stand for me and my son. its about 50-70 yards but its a straight shot. he is also pointing straight in the direction we hunt ducks which is another 200 yards. this area has heavy growth, and i dont think either one of us knew the other is there. however, he knows that he is shooting onto my lease. i will not make a stink about the permanent blind as i like my camp the way it not burnt. but i now can not use my stand, as i fear myself or son getting shot. is it illegal for him to be shooting onto my property? any shot made in 180 degree direction will be a shot onto my property. what should i do?

whats the lowest water level at butte la rose gauge that a bass boat can get into ruez pit or mama's pond just south of benoit?

June 16, 2012 at 4:22pm

i saw an add on this web site the other day for a new spinning tackle product. it clipped on the rod just before the reel. you then clipped the line on it after casting, and it added action to your lure during retrieval. anyone know the name of this product?

looking for water reports in henderson from thursday. was the water ok after all the wind or is stirred up? fish report would also be nice but not necessary. if you report the water condition, please indicate if north or south of interstate.

April 21, 2011 at 2:09pm

what gauge to read to know when the water stops topping the flood gate at henderson. what is the water level?

April 14, 2011 at 2:55pm

moon phase seems to have a lot to do with fishing conditions and apparently so does the where the moon is located at a particular time....
anyone know what the super moon will do for the fishing this weekend?

are the bream biting yet in lake martin? i want to take my 5 y.o. somewhere close to lafayette to do some easy fishing. i am not looking for eating size fish, but something to ease him into fishing. i am sure we will do more eating than fishing any anyway.
i have never fished this lake before. can you use bass boat in there?

March 17, 2011 at 10:04am

are the bream biting in henderson? not sure if the water rise has muddied the water and slowed the bite. i dont fish there much, but i would like to bring my 5 y.o. fishing. i am looking for a place to fish suspended bream over tree tops or something like that. fishing the over hangs wont work with a five y.o. if so, what portion of henderson ie bigeuax area, near mcgee's landing, north of interstate etc...? give me the gps coordinates to your honey hole! just joking.

we are in lafayette, so if anyone else has a suggestion for easy bream fishing. let me know.

March 14, 2011 at 10:15am

i agree with you that there may be something wrong with the boat. we do get up on top the waves, but we have to back off after a while to rearrange our internal organs. :) however, most of the comments on this thread say that trim tabs 'helped'. it dont see anyone really saying that its a comfortable ride. i just want the person asking the question to consider this before dropping a small fortune on something that he might regret if it performs like this particular boat. it does ride solid though. my sea pro sounds like its gonna fall apart when beating through waves, but it (the sea pro) rides dry and very well. the blazer bay is a rougher ride.

A comment titled: ride in one first in response to a report titled: Blazer Bay 2220 Feedback

this is a big investment. i fish in my step dads quit a bit at cocodrie. its a great looking boat, and the interir set up is great!however, i dont like this boat. trim tabs help, but it is the roughest riding boat i have been in with a 'V' bottom. if the waves are more than 1 foot, we cant go fast or you will regret it. most of the time, we are going 9-12 knots not to get pounded.
i have a sea pro, and i can run 50 mph where he is having to cut way back not to get hurt. i had to have back surgery after to taking a hard wave in his boat, literally. not saying not to get this boat, but do your homework first! you dont want to regret your decision if cant perform.

A comment titled: humor in response to a report titled: Neutering a dog

i was trying to add a little humor to get my point across. all to often people go to the internet for medical advice and make the wrong decision. your question is valid, the answer is not as easy as yes or no. Testicles cant be put back after removal and to ask an expert at fishing or hunting medical advice may not be the best idea.

A comment titled: gun in response to a report titled: Which gun?

my boy really likes to hunt squirrels. his first gun is a cricket .22 awesome gun. we fight over it! its also really safe because it has a hammer like the old penball machines that must be pulled back before it will shoot.

coming to this website for medical advice is like your wife going to a pimp for gynecology advice. talk to your vet and save this website for fishing advice

yes it can by using propylene gylcol. it has to be diluted properly. not gonna attempt that on a fishing website, see your vet. however, i cant express enough that this stuff is not working!

A comment titled: opinion in response to a report titled: Anti hunting vet

i too am a veterinarian. Usually when there is a problem, it has to do with a communication error. i also will back the other vets that i will retest before administering a treatment. If you bring a dog to a specialty center, they will re do x rays, blood work etc. it's not to make money, but you have confidence in your machines etc...sometimes test are wrong. there are false positives and negatives. ask any vet, they have seen it. so, it's always sound medicine to confirm for yourself that this dog is actually positive. who knows, maybe the technician was busy and actually mixed up 2 test. She may have saved moe an unnecessary treatment. i will do anesthesia on a positive dog but only after extensive blood work, e k g and weighing options for best outcome.
i will quote anyone on what it cost (in general) to treat for heart worms; however, i make people aware that each case is different and your dog may need other treatments/medications should problems arise.
who knows, this vet may be anti hunting. they are out there. but i think we all have to remember that we need to the dogs well being 1st in our minds.
as far as vaccine cost. the cost of the vaccine is least costly part of the whole thing. As veterinarians, we must pay to take classes to make sure we are providing the right vaccines each year, paying for a person to inventory and order these vaccines. they sit in a fridge that was bought and paid for and cooling 24 hours a day. a syringe and needle, technician to hold the dog for the vaccine, cleaning the room after the patient leaves, workers comp if someone gets bit, and the other cost that the other vet mentioned as well.
i hope this sheds some additional light on the subject. have a great weekend...wear your life vest!

A comment titled: ivermec in response to a report titled: Heartguard heartworm medicine

it's cheap but i would not do it. the active ingredient in heart guard is!??? if you are going to use it anyway, make sure you are using the right one. there are some ivermec products that have extra ingredients that you dont want. also, get with your vet for a dose. most people are giving enough to kill or make dogs have nerve issues. remember this stuff is made for 1200 pound animals not 75 pound dogs!

A comment titled: resistant heartworms in response to a report titled: Heartguard heartworm medicine

I am a vet and know about this problem! we have known about this problem for about 8 years. i took a little while for research to catch up to what we were seeing at our clinics. We now know that there is resistant strains of heart worms. We have identified them. The traditional oral heart worm preventives do not work. For a while it appeared that oral ivermec (cattle dewormer) was working. I know of a trainer giving this to his dogs and 10/13 dogs tested positive last year. This is occuring with all oral preventives. As the original posted mentioned, we thought it was a digestion problem. now we know that it is resistance.
so, there is a product that is 99.99% effective. it is called advantage multi. it also prevents fleas, and intestinal parasites. it does not come off in the water; however, it is topical. the only good alternative is the 6 month shot called proheart. i hope this helps!

A comment titled: sorry in response to a report titled: Treatment for heartworm positive dogs

man, i'm sorry for your problems. if you were giving preventive, you were doing what was asked, so dont feel bad. since around katrina, we have had a resistance to all oral heartworm preventives occurring throughout the US. it truly is an epidemic. i have not seen your dog, so i am making general comments and in no way trying to advise you on what to do, but rather help you make good decisions for your buddy.
i have had clients try to give oral ivomec or ivomectin (same medicine) at all kinds of doses and it is failing. i have had people try to give it every 15 days and it is failing. all oral preventive medications are having problems. i've seen a kennel with 11/14 dogs show positive while giving ivomec. the product to use is advantage multi to prevent infections. when using this product, they cant make dogs even in laboratory setting using 'resistant' heartworms get infections while on this product. good stuff. zero failures in my practice!
there is a protocol using doxycycline daily for 30 days, then waiting 2 months and repeating the cycle to get rid of heart worms while using a heart worm preventive at the same time to prevent new infections. its called a soft or slow kill method. seems to work ok. doxy is hard to get right now. it is one of the drugs that is in short supply. it went from a few cents a pill to 2-3 dollars a pill. not sure how long this shortage problem will last. most clinics do have a supply as they gave us heads up that the shortage was coming.
the traditional method of treating heartworms does work. we have improved the treatment tremendously in the last few years. i do it all the time. most owners dont even notice a difference in the pet while going through the treatment. the dog does have to stay quiet though.
as a side note...i cant speak for all veterinarians but the comment of the vet not having a hand in the price of the treatment so not recommended using ... that was posted is out of line. veterinarians are very caring people. we do what we do because we enjoy using our God given talent, not to become rich. if there is a treatment that works best, that's what we recommend. if its cheaper great.
i think you need to spend some time with your vet with a list of questions and concerns and let him/her make the best decision for your pets health. these boards are great for fish advice, but i would leave the medical advise for the professionals. everything else is just a good guess.
