Been playing with jigheads for past couple years. Got tired of my tails getting ripped off by the yellowmouths.I have gave friends and family members several of these to test out and after about 2000 jigheads made and several hooks later we found one to hold up to reds and big specks. Problem I find with most jigheads is they have too short of hooks. So when the speck bites the action part ( tail ) , hookset is missed. So with a longer hook when they go to bite the tail you get more hooksets . Also this hook doesn't rust as quickly. Anyone else make their own jigheads? I have played with this #2 hook and in 1/8 and 1/4 oz it works very well.

made a trip before the storm last sunday with a couple friends and thought I would share, cant wait to get back at it.

Ok had to post this report, this is what fishing is really about....making a kid smile. Great day on the water with family and friends, great weekend at Leeville with 2 limits saturday most 14-17 and one man limit sunday got ran off early cause of storms. White plastics were the key for us.

May 07, 2012 at 6:12pm

Went sunday with a friend to show his buddy around they bay. Hit bird island,case-tete...and got chased by storms back into leeville. Did good overall specs were on in the morning but died off after the storm came in never hit past little lake though. Went back out and played in the bays and both boats filled the ice chests. All in all good trip. Lots of large whities out there. We had at one time 6 dolphin killin us at the islands ...was fun though. Pic is from our boat...think he might have had more fish....hmmmm now that aint right..

Wife was bugging to fish so took her and kids to leeville to play this morning. Kids didnt wanna fish so they kept themselves occupied on boat. Hit the islands and found throwbacks at philo. Hit some well heads and found some 16+ on bottom and under cork. Ended up with a nice mess of mostly 17 inch trout ...they got aggressive around 10-10:30 and started popping braid lines with 20lb leaders. Ended up with a one man limit between wife and I and only had a 13 inch from philo in box rest were 16+. Baits were chartrause twin tail shrimp and minnows when they went slack to start em up again.

July 10, 2011 at 5:48pm

Made a trip to the island this morning to play fish the surf and let the kids relax at the beach. I couldnt fish all the area I wanted to at the park due to someone drowned there yesterday. My prayers go out to his family in a sad situation. I did get spooled by something as I was bouncing a norton sand eel on bottom. Snapped 30lb power pro. Had a good time and kids had a blast. Was packed on day use end . Seen some nice boxes of trout came off topwater this morning .

Just wanting to know what kind of jighead everyone using...and why? I have become turned off of the commercial ones I used to buy in stores due to short hooks which in part is why we loose tails and ends of our baits. I have been making my own using a eagle claw 630-2/0 hook and it works well ...dont loose many tails or end s of baits ripped off....they bite hook instead. Works well on big reds also. Everyone I have gave some to have had good results.Always looking for pro's and cons of other jigheads. Oh and the cost is nice too costs me 8.00 per 100.

Just got back from getting my sons deer back from Derek Plaisance ..he did a good job on his deer and did good on my european mount too.

Made a trip to hopedale this morning despite 20-30 mph winds. Wife said she wants to be on water regardless. Started at lake Ameda first time in there and could tell water really low. Went toward one shoreline for a point and found less than a foot of water quickly (thank god for tunnel hull). Decided to scrap that idea and so went exploring ran entire bayou loutra and played on the east side a little . Found clean water and a so so bite but either way just a day to run the boat test new gps and make sure water pressure gauge repair was good. The rock dam had 2-3 ft waves. All in all didnt see much action out of anyone but its better than sitting at home.

April 16, 2011 at 9:12pm

Wondering how many people still make their own jig heads and weights? I have been for years for friends and family...powder coat jigheads and all. Costs me about 8 bucks to make 100 jigheads. I do 3/8 and 1/4 oz...1/4 oz mainly for specks. Weights for reds and surf fishing.

April 10, 2011 at 12:23pm

I never see any camps for rent or sale in hopedale. If ya know of any e-mail please.....thanks in advance.

February 06, 2011 at 10:04am

Whats your new years resolution?? I have decided mine would be to fish more....my wife supports it also. I dont think I fished enough in 2010. I learned new areas like hopedale and delecroix. So starting Feb 1st I will start my goal of fishing every other weekend . Like all resolutions it wont be perfect but hey its something to look forward to. Hope everyone had a safe new years eve and see ya on the water.

Ok I need some help..my buddy has a place he hunts and he has trespasser issues. He knows who it is and has pics. So does he go to cops and have the guy arrested or cited for trespassing? Be nice and talk to the guy? Granted the person has stolen and it is on camera. So he is a theif too. Cant get too much into detail cause the theif can be reading this. What would you do?

November 17, 2010 at 9:52pm

November 08, 2010 at 7:06pm

Took my son on the youth hunt last weekend and he found him a doe. Now that shes out the way he is concentrating on bucks. Love it when it comes together for the kids. Looks like every hunt I do he will be there....no complaints.

November 03, 2010 at 6:37pm

Havent fished leeville in a while. Got there sunday morning at 9 with wife and kids. Didnt fish hard just went to a new area and played. Found clean water and wife put some specs in the boat. I got to try my new Okuma trio 40 rigged with 10 pound test. Caught a nice 27 inch red and that reel is nice ...tried it on a few specs too. Ended with 30 only 4 whities. Most specs were 13-14. They liked chartreuse gulp minnow. Whitebeans saw your boat at terrys but didnt see you. Looks like specs in the bays still if you can avoid oil spill response boats everywhere. Specs in clean water 18 inches under cork.

So after seeing the new maps WAHOOOOOOOO. I feel that I have this fishites syndrom that might keep me from goin to work for the next couple days. I wonder how many people will call in sick this following week. I might be one also that this new FISH FLUE has decided to invade my body. Say it again WAHOOO......but yes we need the timbalier chain to open.

Went down to Lafitte for first time. Put in at c&m. No problems there . Went down towards little lake and tried fishing..wow grass everywhere. No salinity at all. Started to cross little lake to go further south. Just islands of grass on east and west side. West side alot worse. Threw back some undersized reds . Ran to the pen to see what thats all about. Kinda cool clear water but no bites. Ran south just sight seeing . Talked to WLF bioligist doin survey and he was tellin me salinity very far down even on backside grande isle. No fish being caught right now due to so much fresh water. I like lafitte, beautiful place but no fish right now. Wife enjoyed running and seeing a new place I enjoyed just beeing on water. I need to concentrate on gettin ready for hunting season and some work stuff comin up this month so I guess maybe Ill plan somethin next month. ( oh yea I was supposed to go somewhere else sat morning but I got put on a leash for bad behavoir)

July 12, 2010 at 6:46pm

Recently areas like east of leeville have opened. Places to stay like Boudreauxs (probably mispelled it) are no longer booking for fisherman due to then have booked months in advance for other companies. Buddy told me about this and I called to verify and its true. So they have gauranteed money for all week not just booked up weekends like summer pattern ....buisness is buisness and they will make more off of that than us.. Makes me wonder when these places will open up for the people who have gone for years. I personally dont see it till maybe next year.Havent heard about bobby lynns or sportsman in fourchon.

A comment titled: strike in response to a report titled: new jigheads

I have always read that speckled trout strike the head of their prey first to kill it but I do not believe they all do. How many times have you seen your tails ripped off? Most everyone I know that fishes saltwater have been through that. As for effecting action, most action is in the tail of the bait so none lost using a longer hook. It still gives the bait alot of room in the rear . I guess to each their own and its mainly based on their preference. I have always liked the round ball on a jighead due to it does not get snagged as much also. Thanks for your input though.

Great advice on the looking in past history on google maps. Keep in mind every time a major storm blows in canals change also, debri, mud ect. When exploring a new area ( new to you) I trim down and go really slow. If I hit bottom I can still trim up and get out. It also helps to have a boat that can go really shallow. I have been in 8 inches in my boat but I also have a tunnell hull. I always have my gps and when I get home I mark depth of canals I explored on my google map and keep it updated . I have noticed in past 2 years one route I run a canal has got 1.5 ft shallower due to silt ect.Just some advice.

We did a quick trip saturday just me , my wife and my daughter...yep girls trip. Did good ran from storms first thing in morning but stayed jumping islands ti'll 10 and then went scouting . wife found some new spots that had trout on em and at 1:00 I was on a very good topwater bite. Called it after the bite petered out and we had 25 or so in the boat. I can say though most fish were throwbacks at certain islands but in shallow water all fish caught were 14 plus. Biggest speck caught was 19' . Did not use live bait I think my daughter caught one on minnows but she usues minnows for crabbing...yea. All in all good day got a couple trips lined up but hopedale calling me next month so gotta do that also.

Last weekend was a great weekend weather held off till sunday mid morning. Glad you liked it out there and its people who help those not famaliar with the area that make it a really good weekend. That area changes alot so only word of caution is watch for those mud flats and obstructions in the water. Have fished Leeville a long time and there is stuff in that bay that is just plain scary. Stay safe is the key.

A comment titled: rifle in response to a report titled: Rifle for my daughter

Ok gotta put my 2 cents in here due to I was in same situation last year. I found my daughter who is 10 a 308 and hers is pink. Had the loads stepped down so cup pressure would not be that high and thats means less recoil. SHe took her first doe that weighed 140 lbs opening youth at 55 yards. I topped it with a simmons 3x9x50 scope so she can have full view at last shooting light.Key was I made her go to the range after I sighted it in at 100 on a bench vise and made her shoot a full size deer target at 50 and 100. She can keep a 2 inch group at 100 so I was set for her to hunt. This gun is a Howa model 1500 and this gun is crazy accurate. Sent you a pic of the gun .

I use to attend CCA benifits with their auctions and all that stuff....well I had a question years ago about the same land law and why cca would not jump in and I got a e-mail from someone from cca that stated they dont get involved with issues such as that. Never attended anything that has to do with them again since. They are a greedy organiziation and are not here for the fisherman just to make money. They wont take a side on anything cause they are scared. Yes they are a texas company and they will not look out for us. If ya wanna get past a gate bring some chainsaws with xtra blades with ya. As for this site I consider it a good site but if ya gonna threaten to ban people cause they knockin CCA then yall no better then them in my eyes. I think everyone should express there opinion and warn others about organizations that are scams. I read alot of posts and I am not easily influinced by others opinions but I take advice and use it wisely. My advice is avoid CCA and support local organizations.

I ahve a 20ft boat also. Have a 5 foot about 1 inch diameter for front and a 3 ft stainless with a 1/2 inch in the back. The smaller diameter hold the best due to better penetration. I have 50ft line on both and they hold great.

I bought the jighead mold frombass pro or cabellas...I forget. I had to modify the mold to fit my hook shank since it is thicker than the mold base.I have alot of lead that I have melted in my lee pot. I made like 500 weights one day when I was bored. I do like making my own jigheads and I have started powder coating them in white and chartreuse.
