The last few hunts after second split opener weekend have been good days . Had one bad day coupled with low clouds and no wind . That kind of weather makes it tough in the woods .

December 30, 2016 at 3:39pm

5 man limit of mallards in the sweet hole . Finally got water during the split .

December 18, 2016 at 5:30pm

Had a decent opener in the Bottoms. My normal sweet hole on my property is dry and holding lots of deer instead of ducks. My buddy across the bayou from me , his lake is about 4 feet low but holding plenty of water . Low water to no water making it tough .

you want ducks, FIX the habitat here. they do come but dont stay do to lack of resources, either water or food. The biggest issue is food, period. Most ag lands south of the state line are not duck friendly anymore. you show me an area with the sky black with mallards and ill show you an area thats miles and miles of prime duck food in the forms or rice, corn, etc. FOOD FOOD FOOD, weather is a small ingredient in the recipe, without food or water nothing is coming even if the ice age hits.

Opener was like sitting in a hair dryer , Sunday that front cooled it off a lot . Never got above 30 on the temp gauge in the blind . Killed 5 man limit of straight mallards that morning . Didn't see another type of duck . Monday got 6 , then yesterday we killed a 2 man limit of mallards and greys and woodies to finish up . We don't see the pressure around us it's not hunted a lot in our area. The weather flat pushed them out after the warm up to 80 overnight .

They blew out fast once the south wind and 80 degree temps hit Friday night and Saturday .

Well quit griping and either go north to hunt or lobby together and get the farms in south la to quit planting sugar cane and put grain in the ground. There's nothing for a mallard duck in SE la period .

December 14, 2016 at 9:19am

pumping a harvested field isn't baiting . Combines are more efficient these days . Not near the waste grain left as in the past. It's normal agricultural practices . Get out of the marsh if you want to kill anything besides teal and grays . Head north to Arkansas .

December 12, 2016 at 5:48pm

Pumping water into a harvested field isn't the magic wand . Still need the weather to push them .

Field hunting in South Arkansas got hot this week when the front blew in .

More rice , beans , and corn to the north of La than there ever has been . There's your culprit with the mallards.

Our woods are loaded down with ducks in north La. Plenty of water this year. Rice up here holding a lot of ducks and specks to. Tomorrow being opening day we might run a few teal and grays south for y'all.

If it makes anyone feel better 5500 won't touch a pit in NELA . 7500 and up to 20,000 is the norm .

NELA and SE Ark are sitting good with water from that last low. We went from bone dry in our best spot to slap full over night . We still have a long ways till we open on the 21st.

Marsh looks nothing like my flooded cypress lakes or oak flats . Early season dates screws us , late season screws y'all as you say . So it definitely shouldn't be the same zone . You also can't lump NELA into the same zone as the Shreveport area hunters, they like early as well. I can just see us in NELA getting the shaft and having to open early due to the stupidity going on with the commission .

We discuss mallards because that's our bread and butter duck in NELA. We want to hunt late like we always have , our habitat and migration patterns with our harvest reflect a late opener fits us best. I want the commission to leave us in NELA alone and what y'all do down south is y'all's business. Leave us in our own zone so be it but don't make us open early .

I doubt you count any today with the storms. I did see about 60 marsh rockets on a small pond near fourchon this morning as I flew over.

One of my most memorable recent hunts with my dad, he is getting up in age and still has the drive to go. He doesn't get around as well as he did when he was younger but he still can shoot.

all I have to say is leave the east zone dates alone, us who hunt the state line and hunt woods love the last two weeks of January. From Christmas on its pretty good, have had a many of jam up mallard hunts the last two weeks of the season. Far as paired up in late season I wouldn't call large groups or 20-80 birds fogging the decoys paired up. this shows how different the hunting is from one end of the state to the other. which is why late hunting works for NELA and may not for folks further south.

I have no dog in the fight as far as the coastal area but I hope the idiots don't decide to start changing east zone dates the next time it rolls around for discussion. I feel the pain of the coastal rice hunters, some wont even have water or fields ready. Im mainly irritated we didn't get the extra speck.

now that we have a longer split again in the east zone. it allows me to venture across the state line and hunt in Arkansas while we are closed. I just hope the stunt they pulled on the coastal zone doesn't hit the east zone ever. I think nov. 7 is entirely to early regardless of the area. only thing that will be down is blue wing teal and some spoons and a few other non desirables. heck most fields wont even be flooded yet.

the commissioners are all from south la and its obvious they hunt in swla. the one commissioner from North la wasn't even present. The north has nothing to do with the coastal areas. I can assure you us northern boys aren't leaving our leaning post against our favorite oak tree to come marsh hunting. I truly feel sorry for the coastal hunters especially the rice fields in that area. you all really got raked over the coals.
