Went to Lake Verret April 3. Caught a few catfish on night crawlers. Water was high. Put in at Adams landing and the water was 1.5 inches below the top of the pier. Belle River water was clear. Lake Verret water color was clear greeng and not muddy. It was streaked with what looked like pollenn or algie along the south bank. Crackerhead water was clear coffee colored. Did not see any caterpillars in the trees yet. Didn’t stay long after a 15-20 mph wind picked up.

caught a few nice bluegill and a crappie on crickets off crackerhead. The wind was blowing from the north and there were some pretty good waves on Verrett as we crossed over from atakapas landing. we were able to move around and found a couple of beds. I tried them on topwater flies, but they were just batting at it, not taking it. Anyway the wife and i had fun.

OK ladies and gentlemen,
I am just about to turn 60. I fished with my dad when a kid as a young man, but it seem that other life experiences such as a stent in the Army and other reasons (excuses) have kept me off the water for a long time. Too long, in fact. I just retired and now it is time to do some fishing. I have a nitro bay 1800 and a 90 yamaha to fish out of. I have been down to Lafitte three or four times, but have not caught more than one or two. I have been lurking for awhile reading posts attempting to glean information from the wealth of knowledgeable people who frequent these boards. I decided to go ahead and register and come out of the shadows. I am not wanting to know the gps coordinates of your favorite honey hole. I would like to know how to 'read the water' better. When I go out I see a lot of water. My depth finder says the depth is 4 feet. I am looking for advice as to how to look out and find oyster beds, identify shallow water, how to find reefs and drop-offs and even how to find clear water. Any how to's would also be appreciated. I live in Baton Rouge so any areas to the southeast, south, or southwest are within striking distance.

Cheers-

Update for Friday the 13th. Caught another mess of catfish on the south side of the lake. The water was clear green, but with surface trash. I was surprised by a 70 degree surface temp when last week it was 74 degrees. Bell River was muddy, but had dropped to about 5 inches below the dock.

I don't know if I am going to be able to go tomorrow, but I will definitely keep these things in mind.
