I've got a quick question for all the deer experts out there. Does anyone know if deer would eat raw rice?

We've got a member at our camp that can get his hands on a bunch cheap.

Took my 7 year old on his first hunt with a gun, and he connected on this doe at 45 yards with his .44 mag. It was the greatest feeling in the world for me and my friends at the camp. We have been practicing all Summer shooting and on shot placement. On the afternoon of the first day of the youth hunt, Owen put it all together and made a great shot on this doe. She was taken in Simsboro, LA.

Does anyone know if the shooting range is open at Sherburne? I wanted to bring my son out to get a litttle practice with his .22, but didn't know if it was open after the high water.

I'm planning on renting a camp in Grand Isle this summer. What is the best month for catching Specks in the surf? We will have a couple boats with us, but I really like catching in the surf, even if we just drive the boats up to catch them. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure how many of you cook backstrap like this, but I thought I would share a delicious way to eat it.

I sliced it into steaks about 1 1/2' thick, lightly sprayed them with olive oil, applied sea salt and fresh cracked pepper, and then grilled them just like a filet mignon until medium rare.

We ate them with a baked potato and I swear I thought I was eating a petite filet!

Guys and Girls, I need some advice. I hunt a small piece of property owned by my grandmother in Lincoln Parish. We have a pipeline that runs through it that we have hunted on for years. My uncle built a permanent box stand (cemented in the ground) in 1991. It is 150 yards from the stand to the property line. 3 years ago, a 'gentleman' leased the neighboring property and built a stand within 50 yards of the property line in direct site of our stand. He is now telling us that if we shoot towards him while he is in the stand, that he is going to call the sheriff's dept. I agree with him that it is unsafe for us to shoot in his direction, but he has put himself in harm's way. Are there any laws or courses of action that could be taken to remedy this situation, or should we just continue to hunt and shoot that direction?

Going for the Bodybuilder13 look. How did I do?

November 01, 2010 at 8:57am

I just put the purchase on an H&R 44 Mag Handi Rifle with a 22' barrel. The reason I picked this caliber was because I have a 6 year old son coming up and have read that the recoil is not bad. I figured I could kill two birds with one stone and get a gun for primitive arms season and get a gun for my son to use in a few years. I will be topping it with a Nikon Monarch 3x9x40 scope.

It should be in within the next two days. I would like to get any pros and cons for using this rifle and also what ammo would be best. The farthest shot in my food plot is 140 yards.

Any info would be appreciated! I'm planning on using Hornaday 225 grain leverevolution bullets unless anyone has a better recommendation.

Got some more pics last weekend. October 30 can't get here fast enough. I got quite a few new ones of my favorite spike, and a nice 8 point has been visiting at night.

September 13, 2010 at 3:39pm

Could someone please score and age the buck with tall spikes for me. He'll make a nice addition to my trophy room.

No seriously, I just wanted to share a few pics I got off the camera today. These things are addictive. Huntr you were right, I've seen pics of deer I would have never known were around. In less than 2 weeks I have gotten over 1300 pics of deer. Of course most are the same deer over and over, but I have quite a few pics of diferent does with fawns.

August 13, 2010 at 9:13pm

Went and pulled the cards out of the cameras that we put out two weeks ago. We got some really good pics of does and fawns. We only got one pic of a rack buck so far. You guys were right, these things are addictive. I can't wait to go check them again in a few weeks.

I killed this 4-point last weekend. It had 3 on one side and 1 on the other. He was a good sized deer for our area(160 pounds). Do you guys believe he should have been taken out or did have potential to be a "good" buck one day. I didn't officialy age him, but I did take a look in his mouth and by his teeth he appeared to be 2 1/2.

After seeing the reprt by blooddeep_gator I decided to post some picks of the box stand we built. My son is 5 this year and I want to get him involved in deer hunting, so with the help of some good friends we built a stand big enough for the whole family. We built it on some family land in Simsboro, La. It's 4x8 and 8 feet tall on the inside(in case we need to do jumping jacks to stay warm). BTW the corn feeder to the right is 80 yards away and the food plot/shooting lane in the front is 150 yards. This is carved out of a very thick pine thicket that was clear cut 7 years ago. This is the first food plot I've ever attempted. It came out pretty good thanks to the advice and tips from other guys on here. Thanks

Quick question for you guys. How long do you think shrimp will stay good on ice? I caught some monday and I'm going to Shreveport Thursday and wanted to bring some to my family on ice. Do yall think they will stay good or should I head them and freeze them?

August 12, 2009 at 7:03pm

Quick questiob to all the chefs. I'm boiling some shrimp that were caught at Rockefeller yesterday and need to know how long to boil, soak, etc. that will make them easy to peel. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. The wife has friends coming over, and I don't want to dissapoint. Thanks.

Just want to give La. Sportsman Magazine a big thumbs up. Earlier this month, I did not receive my issue of the sportsman. I saw it on the news stand and figured there must be something wrong. I waited and waited and still nothing. I got on this website, found the contact information and sent an e-mail. The next day I had my magazine in the mailbox in an overnight envelope. It cost them $4.95 to send a $3.00 magazine. I really did not expect such customer service. I just want to commend them on their service. THANKS!

Need some advice. I recently built a boat blind that came out very well using EMT, C-clamps, and fast grass. The only problem is when I'm trailering the boat or riding with the blind down, the grass doesn't roll up very well. I've seen some other pop up blinds that have some sort of net material behind the grass and the grass is tie wrapped to it. Then you can kind of roll the net up without tearing up the grass too bad. If anyone knows where I can get some of this net, or know of anything else I could use behind the grass please let me know.

Guys I need some help. I got two sacks of crawfish I need to keep alive till tomorrow. Wife won't let me take the shelves out of the fridge like we used to do in college. What can I do to keep them alive in ice chests? I put ice in the bottom of a 150 qt chest, put down a burlap sack, and then put the sacks on top. They just don't seem very cool. Should I put another layer of burlap and some more ice?

I know I read it on here before, but I can't find the old report. I caught a nice bunch of crabs yesterday, came home and boiled them. But as always alot of the legs and pinchers fell off while they're boiling. What can I do to stop this? They just look alot better when you serve them if they have all of their appendages!

Has anybody else seen the lottery application on Wildlife and Fisheries website to fish a couple of canals on the White Lake property that was "donated" to the state during the Foster administration. What a load of crap! Send in 5 bucks and IF you get picked send 30 more and then you have the PRIVELEDGE to fish on property that we the taxpayers supposedly own. Oh and you can't launch your boat on White Lake property either, you must find another boat ramp. I can almost understand the Lottery Hunt over there, but this really takes the cake. Anyone else have any opinions about this situation or am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?

I have a Nikon Prostaff on a 35 Whelen and have had no problems. So I'm pretty sure it can handle a 444.

It's a LONG walk. Some people put their stuff on a wagon and hoof it, but I would strongly recommend a 4 wheeler.

A comment titled: Well Put in response to a report titled: Opening Day

My 9 year old killed his 2nd deer ever last weekend. I have never seen him more excited. But what I'm most proud of is his respect for life and responsibility. I taught him at a young age that we don't kill anything unless we eat it or we have to. He doesn't even kill wasps or spiders.

Anyway, the deer he shot was not dead and was laying there bawling like they sometimes do. When we got to it he started crying. He told me he was sorry for crying. I told him that I have never been prouder of him and it is a natural reaction to be sad to have to finish off an animal, but it's all part of killing our own food.

I know friends of his that are all into video games and want to go around the neighborhood smashing and killing all the bugs and animals they see. I'm afraid if people don't get back to our roots, we're going to have a pretty sad society in just a few generations.

It's legal to use in La.

I know you can get it at Gulfway in Kaplan. I think you can also get it at T&S Milling in New Iberia. There's another place in Abbeville to get it, but the name escapes me right now.

A comment titled: weight in response to a report titled: Crossbow help

You probably want to use 125 grain, because you need to keep your total weight above 475 (I believe). If the total weight is too low, you run the risk of breaking a string. The is all the info you need to know on crossbownation.com

Oh, and you'll wanna stick with mechanical, my brother and I use the Schwacker and they cut tremendous holes.

The cottonmouth is ovoviviparous, which means they have eggs which hatch inside the mother and then the mother gives live birth at a later time. That is why there is no placental connection to the mother.

I've been checked at Rockefeller a few times and they have always been professional. I'm sure there are a few bad ones out there as with any profession, but I also think it has a lot to do with you being amicable and polite too.

A guy I work with ordered a utility trailer from Proride because of the low price and just like all of you, he was promised a delivery date that was not met. As a matter of fact, he was told it would be ready on 2 more occasions and when the time came, guess what? No trailer.

He finally got it about a month late.

This seems to be a recurring issue.

Man, he got some teeth on him!

I cooked the backstrap off a 150# boar last night and it was awesome. I smothered it in a gravy and even my wife (who is picky) thought it was good. I don't know if it made a difference, but I cut the straps out as soon as I shot the pig. The meat was still twitching when I threw it on ice.

There was a guy out there last year using some of those nets and he was killing the crawfish.

He was walking in the canal that runs along side the road and had them set by the trees on the other side.
