This is Kaleb's first deer!!! His father Joey Gautreaux of Opleousas took him to Thistlethwaite for the youth hunt... Joey was going to have him use a shotgun with buckshot, but I talked him into using my wife's 243 instead.. It truned out to be a good thing... With Saturday being a bust, they went back Sunday. They got in the stands at 12:00pm, and with seeing anything, they decided to leave early.. They got down at 3:30 and started walking out.. While on their out they spotted a deer feeding.. Joey got down on his hands and knees and Kaleb took the rest that was offered to him... With Joey shaking, Kaleb had to calm his dad down so he could get the shot off.... The shot was 130 yards, and with one shot from the massive 243 Hornady Light Mags, it went down hard... The dad didn't get to see the deer drop, so they waited a few minutes and started walking... Well what they saw was a BUCK!!!!! Kaleb's first deer, a 4pt weighting a massive 92# 1.5 years old... This was the only deer taken out of Thistlethwaite the entire weekend.....

Congrats to this young Man..... I hope that it's just the start!!!

Well after 4 hunts without seeing anything but coons,, I broke the ice Sunday evening at 6:20... This spike came in and after 20 minutes gave me a quartering to me shot... I almost got to see him go down, not more than 40 yards away... It's good to finally get one...

This morning I was reading my new issue of Louisiana Sportsman mag... About half way through it I found an article about a guy that did a taste test... He fried some hard head cats on the side of specks... He claims that the people doing the taste test ate all of the hard heads first!!! I can't say what they taste like, because I've never eaten one,,, but I have just for the fun of it cleaned one, and the meat was very red... We feed it to the seagulls and they would pick it up and then drop it... Have any of yall ever tired them???

A buddy and my self caught a few blues in the river this morning.. All on worms.. Started not to go with the river on the rise, but gave it a try anyway.. Caught 30, got rained on, and got checked by the LDWF.. They were very nice about the safety check...

Has anyone tried the Gulp Shrimp for catfish??? I know that they work great in salt water, but will they catch catfish on the bottom.. I was thinking about cutting them up and trying them bottom fishing.. Any comments or suggestions??
Thanks in advance!!

Well boys today was not a good turkey day.. I was at thisletwaite for the youth hunt.. My hunter was the same young man that I guided last year Garrett Guillory... Well last year it was all over at 7:20, with a trophy bird.. Today was a different story.. I guess the weather last night had something to do with it.. We got hammered last night,, wind and lots of rain.

Out of 4 hunters only 2 heard birds on the roost, then they shut up when they hit the ground..
We hunted till 11:30 and broke for lunch then back out till 4:00 with no luck...

Last year we had almost the same conditions.. Cold front moved through, not as much rain but stronger wind and it was in the low 40's

Man what a tough day

April 05, 2008 at 6:40pm

I'm so tired,... I missed my mid-morning nap today!! At lunch I almost went to the truck and got my trukey stool and pilled up next to a tree!!! HA

I bet money that I'm not the only one feeling this way!

Well boys I got to watch another bird die today.. That makes 3 for the season.. Today I had a hunting buddy from work come with me. Lane has never turkey hunted before,,, will I guess beginners luck. We got the birds on the roost, but the hens took them to the west acorss a DEEP drain, so we had to go north for a while, before we could cross.. The last time we heard our bird they were 400yards away.. We made a set-up and within 10 minutes we had a bird gobblen at us from behind.. WE JUST CAME FROM THERE!! Well it started raining and he shut-up, so I shut-up also... After getting up and going back to where we started the morning off, it started to drizzle.. We started heading back to leave.. While I was running the GPS I started heading towards an old spot that I have killed 3 brids in the past. I stoped 450 feet short and gave a HOLLER!!! GOBBLE GOBBLE.. There were 2 birds gobbling... After sidding them for 30 yards we setup.. After a few runs on the call one of the birds left, and the other stayed, but would not come in... So I pulled my favoite trick out of the vest... THE TURKEY WING.. I made a couple of soft flaps on my boots and some draging in the leaves and within 1 minute he was there... A JAKE in all of his glory.. Let me tell ya... He was very proud to be a JAKE today.... I had the bird that whole way, but Lane had trees blocking him.. I keep calling, and the bird would just look at me.. When I would cut--- he would gobble... (i was doing this to make lans heart come out HA).. Well after 10minutes of the bird walking around eating bugs off the yellow tops, Lane got the shot.. After the blast, the bird didn't move,,, I mean not a twitch, nothing....
Like I said it was his frist turkey hunt.... It took us 45 minutes of calling to kill him...

The bird was 13# and sported a 3"beard, with wopping 1/4" spurs... Trophy Jake...
His bird was number 69 taken out
Good Job Lane...

He is hooked now....

March 30, 2008 at 4:54pm

Well guys the opening weekend was great. On friday my long time hunting buddy and I took off to our #1 spot.. We were sitting down 200 yards from the roost at 5:50.. The first gobble was at 6:30, and it came from roost.. After a few more minutes some other birs started screaming for us to go after them.. We picked up and ran to them.. The birds were north of us and when they hit the ground they went west and fast.. The last time we heard them, they were 300 from us.. We tried to get in front of them, but they were gone in no time.. We sat for a couple of hours just calling every now and then with no luck.. We started walking and cold calling, and at 12:35 I got a bird to answer and he was hot and not alone!! We moved up about 20 yards and sat down quick.. A couple more calls and there they were.. Two long beards!! They got a 40 yards, and started looking.. We tried to double, but when my buddy shot, the second birds was behind a tree and when he left, he went straight away.. NO CHANCE FOR ME.. We started our way out cold calling again with no luck...

Saturday was a good day.. I got some birds to answer, but no luck..

Sunday morning I hunted alone for the first time in several years. The morning started off with the birds to the north gobbling good.. It was the same group that we hunted friday.. I knew that they were going to go west so I ran west and then went north.. I got within 200 yards and when I heard them on the ground I called.. He was gobbling to everything that I threw at him... The next thing I knew they were 300 yards west... I got up and headed back to another roost.. At 9:00 I got a bird to answer a couple of times them he shut it down..
I had told my wife that I would be home early, so I started back to my bike.. I would call every 60 yards or so.. I was almost back to my bike .10 on the GPS, when I made my last call..... GOBBLE GOBBLE... He was 60 yards.. All I had time to do was take the gun off my back and sit... One more call and he was there... He started siding me. I could not reach for my call, so I yelped with my mouth.. He stoped and strutted, then keep going.. Once he got clear, I putted at him and he stoped! BOOM!!!..
It was 10:25 when he gobbled the first time and he was dead at 10:29.... I didn't even have time to start breathing heavy!!!
What a great EASTER MORNING.... THANK YOU GOD!!!!

Good luck ruger & lilruger

Just the rest of the pictures!!

March 16, 2008 at 1:58pm

Well guys, We connected this morning at 7:20.. My hunter was an 11 year old named "Hunter" Webb from Bossier City, and his dad was also with we (John).. I started the morning in the same place where I worked birds yesterday late morning.. I didn't know where they were roosted, but I knew that they wouldn't be too far off.. At 6:45 we heard the first gobble(came from behind us) After a few more gobbles, John and I knew that he was the one to go after.. We made the move and got close(almost too close). The set up was great. I put them in some trash just before the opening and I got back about 40 yards.. It was so open that I had to lay down.. Once they hit the ground, it was on.. There were 2 longbeards, with about 4-5 hens. John & I started cutten at them and 3 of the hens got very upset with us.. We would let them cut at us, but as soon as they would go to yelping I would cut them off with some VERY aggressive cutting... They were madd.. I could see the two toms to the left and they were giving Hunter the complete show,,, spiting, drumbing the works.. I lost sight of the toms for a minute.. Well a minute later,, there was a huge BOOM!!! Hunter connected!! 35 yards, 20ga. The bird was only 16 pounds?? 1" spurs and 2 beards one at 9" & 6 1/4.. A Great 2 Year Old!!!!

I have renamed Hunter to "KILLER".. This was his third turkey hunt, but his first kill... His father John is a very experienced turkey hunter. All he needed for me was to show him the spot...
Once Hunter shot, John got up and went to the bird. As soon as I saw him running I got up, and there were about 10 birds that had came up from behing us.. I had a jake on my left at 10 yards.. He got out of there in a hurry..HA... I might have to go back there for the weekend lottery....

What a great hunt... Taking this kids out sure makes those pre-season scouting trips worth wild.. Now it's the big boys turn...

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!

March 16, 2008 at 1:25pm

Well guys I tried!!! I have a great kid.. His name is Lane Leblanc, he is 13.. a great kid and a true hunter.. The morning started off a bust.. No word from the roost. We had a stiff wind all morning, and I guess that shut them up.. At 8:15 we made a move into where my youth hunter killed last year.. I didn't get a chance to make it that far... I got nasty and loud on my box call and had one answer me.. We moved on them and their hens took them off in two different directions.. We then move up to where they were and waited.. Every now and then they would gobble... Then nothing.. We got up to move and they came back... I got Lane down quick enough & we didn't get busted.. We could both see 2 LONGBEARDS.. I hit the slate call and they both gobbled and then went into full strut.. All of this was at 50yards.. (and he has my gun) There are just too many small trees and trash to get a clean shot. They stayed there for about 10 minutes struting and gobbling... Then the hens showed back up and took them away... We got around them and got in front and worked them again,,, and again no luck... After that it was 12:00 and there just was not any more gobblen....

Maybe my youth sunday will have better luck... I marked that spot on gps and my white a$$ will be there for gobble 30

Good Luck

Well I have had alot of crazy sh*t happen to me over the years hunting...

When one goes in the woods, we are to expect crazy, weird stuff to happen... Well I had one of my most strangest things happen yesterday evening.. I was bow hunting my favorite stand.. There are 2 fresh rubs within 30 yards of me... So when I get there I put out some sent. I use the Southern Whitetails Hyper Heat. I got there at 3:00,, well at 5:00 a doe came in.. It took her over 20 minutes to come 25 yards.. Once she got 35 yards from me she hung up.. I think that the sent was making her nervous.. I was thinking that she was not going to get any closer. The trail that she was on splits where she was standing, and she was facing on the trail that goes into a swamp.. I decided to take the shot.. She was almost broad side with her head turned to the left hard.. almost on her back.(i was on her right side).. I drew back, went to my second pin(30yards), put it right behind the shoulder and touched off the release. I watched the arrow go right over her back.. MISSED.. She broke and ran to me and pass just feet away from my stand.. When she came by I could see blood spraying out from her neck... She ran in the swamp and I watched her go down... I gave her 2 hours.... No problem finding her... the blood trail unbelievable. Those Spitfires sure do a great job!!

Yep... smooth miss---right over her back, and into and through her neck..... How lucky is that..... What a way to end a great season....

And yes that is camo duck tape... beats camo paint or a face net...HA

February 03, 2008 at 8:27am

Well today at 5:45 my wife made her first kill.. After 3 hunts with no luck she made a great shot on this doe with her brand new Savage youth mdl. 243, with a Burris 4X16... We got in the stand at 2:00pm on our pipeline.. The side of the pipeline that I hunt is 645yards long.. Well after putting out over 1000# of corn and ricebran the deer came out on the other side of a canal on the pipeline which is almost not shootable. We kept looking where the feed was and I just happened to look the other way and there she was... Emily got the gun up and I told her to hold on.... There was a huge doe that was feeding towards us, but never would come into the open.. So she took the first one.. The shot was 72 yards and she didn't go but 20 yards..... What a way to end the season...

It's time for the Bullsh*t to stop and the real hunting to start.... Can You Smell It!!! It's close just a couple of more weeks and the clucks, yelps and purrs....GOBBBBLLLLE.... CAN YOU SMELL IT!!!!

A co-worker of mine had this Fallow buck killed at his stand Monday afternoon.. Their club borders Thistlethwaite on the east southeast side. Two years ago I had seen 2 Fallow deer in Nuba.

December 13, 2007 at 8:40am

It sure puts a smile on my face to see all of the kids that killed these past couple of weeks!! There are so many posts to comment on I thought that this would be the best way to say CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!! Keep up the good hunting!!

October 29, 2007 at 4:47pm

Has anybody been out to Catahoula Lake to see if they have
any birds..... I'm sure that they have some, but a few years back we went and it was a dove shoot.... There were 8 of us and we all limited out in under 10min... And it was just after a small tropical deperision... That was the year the the LDWF. had cut all of the grass on the flats around the area called the Bluff.. We found out later that the Feds. were looking into it because of it being baited..

September 14, 2007 at 11:29am

Took the wife this morning to Holly Beach to do a little surf fishing.. A few weeks back we went and the trout were on the outside of the rocks and we had a ruff time getting to them.. This time I took my ocean going pirogue!! We caught 17 specks and 4 reds.. I lost a speck that might have won a boat in the CCA.. I had it in the boat and lost it when I went to put in the surf net!! Oh well maybe next year.. The Trout were there until the lady fish showed up, and I mean they were thick.

If the area that you are scouting has a youth hunt, that area will be closed during the hunt weekend, but before and after it is open for souting.. Also the ATV trails are closed at Sherbrune... That is the only thing that I know of.. Good Luck!!

A comment titled: Good Pattern in response to a report titled: The Verdict is In!

Man>>> that is a very good pattern... Try this once you feel up to it.. Clean your choke very good and then Lube it up.. Any good gun will work.(i use break free). Then take another shot at 40 yards... Out of most chokes it will tighten the pattern 10 to 20%...

Winchester SuperX 2, 3.5" 28"bbl
Briley XXX Straight Rifled Choke
Winchester 3.5" #6 2oz
A good trick that I have learned from an old PA turkey hunter... Clean your choke good... Take a shot, then lube the choke very well with a good gun oil.. Take another shoot.. Out of most chokes it will tighten the pattern by 20%...

A comment titled: ANYTIME in response to a report titled: Dumb Azz Question ?

The problem with planting them down here is that the deer will never let them get tall.... I plant some in the wifes flower bed every year just to piss her off.... It takes about 30-35 days to get tall.. There are several types of seeds also... What I use for the food plots are the Black Oiled SunFlower... They cost just a bit more, but they do seem to grow well...

I plant sunflowers every year.... they hit them before they get 5" tall... And like you said,, very little water or soil prep.. I know that up in the north, deer love them once they get tall also... I plant 1 - 2 50# bags every year.....

Did you get new ammo?? Even if it the same brand, bullet weight, and bullet type, there is a very good chance it will change POI.. When ever I get new ammo, I make sure that it is the same lot number on the box.. Last season I was getting low, so I bought 3 new boxes. After the range my old ammo was shooting 1"low and 1/2"left... still could or would kill @ 100 yards..

A comment titled: ??? in response to a report titled: Etiquette

Well I lost a good hunting buddy back in the late 90's because of this... Him and I scouted and hunted together for a few years.. WE found a great spot on public land to turkey hunt.. For two years we hunted that area together... During the second year, he lost his dad to a heart attack. He didn't want to hunt that year at all... I had to beg for him to come with me,, he did and he brought a friend from his work to join us... This guy is a good guy and is not a hunter... For the opening day of turkey season it was me hunting alone(which is fine) and them two together.. After the morning hunt he wanted to leave and not go back.. Well I was stuck with his buddy for the rest of the lottery hunt... No big deal... During the public weekend I asked a good friend to come with me, so I would not have to be alone for a very early morning boat ride... Well I killed, and when my X-buddy asked me about the hunt, I started the story off by saying Me & Him... Well that did it... Got all Bit@hy and mad... "I CAN'T BELIVE THAT YOU BROUGHT HIM WITH YOU"... and that is how it ended...

If you take a buddy to your best spot, and if he is a true friend, I don't think that person would go back without you,,, I know that I would not

A comment titled: Remington 275grn Core-Lokt in response to a report titled: 44 Magnum Ammo Choice

I have been handgun hunting since the early 90's and I have used most of the 44mag ammo on the market.. I have found that the 300grn is just a bit too slow(no pass through) and that the 230grn is just a bit too light... I have been using the remington core-lokt 275grn for the last 10 years... It's fast enough to shoot long distance and great for the close shots.. I have only had one not pass through within 50 yards... You will not find them at Wal-Mart... Just the upper line hunting shops.. You might even have to find someone to order you some... They are good. I'm shooting them out of a Super Blackhawk 7.5" bbl... and getting just under an inch groups at 50 yards.
Hope this helps...

A comment titled: SAME PROBLEM in response to a report titled: I HAVE GOT A PROMBLE

I have had that same problem.... I have several people that I let hunt my place,, so it's hard to tell who is doing the hunting!! What I have done when I think that someone is hunting a stand that does not belong there,,, I tie string around the stand... Very small and tie it loose so no one will be able to tell it is there... Also remember how you tied it, just incase they do notice it and try to re-tie.. Most of my stands are lock-ons, so what i do is keep the bottom sticks very loose... Once they start to climb the sticks move alot,,, that is a good deterrent... With the use of a camera,,, it will probably get stolen....
