Going to duck hunt Boloxi Marsh for the first time this weekend... I don't want to know what ponds you are hunting... but can anyone give me any information on a decent general area of the marsh to start? This place is pretty big and there are tons of ponds...so choosing one out of the bunch seems to be mind boggling... any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I took this picture with my phone at 20 yards. The bear got within 15 yards of me. I guesstimated him to be 4'-5' feet long from head to butt on all fours. His belly just about drug the ground. His head was wide and creased in the middle with his ears looking as if they were coming out the side of his head. He was clearly a very mature big black bear. I sighted his back height (on all fours) against a tree at 15 yards to give me a reference after getting out of the stand. I measured it to be as high as the lower part of my ribs. I never expected to see a bear this big in Louisiana. I've seen some sows and cubs in south central louisiana many times but never a bore of this caliber. It was an exciting thing to see in the woods...but it really wouldn't bother me if i didn't see another. This bear walked within 15 yards of me then crossed a feild and walked within 40 yards of my buddy. So we both had a taste of the excitment.

As far as deer.....We hunted for 4 days morning and evening with only one doe sighting and one bear. The deer were moving mainly at night. We would find fresh sign every morning. I'm guessing the moon had a bunch to do with it. In all we had a great time and I can't wait to get back up there again. Hopefully I'll be back within the next couple weeks.

I rode all through Davis Pond, front of the diversion, cypress canal, tank pond, and the rice pond on monday... no ducks... we only saw 5 teal out in the lake and two more flew over us while fishing in cypress canal... The food is there..but the ducks aren't.. might be a gallinue & rail shoot.

Yall have a Merry duck hunt.. i mean.. a Merry deer...nope nope.. Merry Hogmas...DOH!!! lol... Merry Christmas yall! Don't forget what it's about.

Christmas hunting tips for 2008:

1. drink the eggnog after you get back, not before you go
2. gumbo won't make you sober enough to get in the boat
3. pack extra toilet paper before walking to your stand
4. tonight, get your buddy two shots to your one (better your chances of hunting his stand/blind)
5. make sure your new hunting toys HAVE BATTERIES before you get in the woods
6. mud and lillies make for good excuses for being late getting back ("but baby i got stuck in the mud")

Yall be safe and have a good one!

This is what it looks like pretty much after every hunt in Salvador WMA... well.. maybe a few more pouldoo than that but not many ducks. I would say we average between 4 - 8 ducks per hunt and 40 - 65 pouldoo on each hunt. The ducks we have killed thus far are.... Dogrees, Ringnecks(more blackjacks than anything else), Grays, teals, blacks, widgeons.... Not as many redheads or as many teal as we saw last year.... but PLENTY, PLENTY, PLENTY POULDOO...and I like Gumbo so it works out good for me.

Had a really good Thanksgiving weekend hunting Pomme de Terre WMA. I saw several deer and a couple hogs most of which came out between 10am - 3pm. I only saw one deer right at outside of that middle of the day time frame. In total I saw 12 deer in 3 hunts. We got in the stands before day break and stayed until dark, unless one of us killed something. The place was pretty crouded with hunters but we didn't run into any problems.. I took a 6pt. (50 yards w/3030 160grn hornady) Friday the 28th @ 12:00 pm. Then I took a hog (120 yards w/ 3030 160grn hornady) Saturday the 29th @ 13:30 pm. I also missed a doe @ 90 yards broadside...phew...i'll never let myself live that one down... i guess i rushed the shot.. but can't get um all... still had a great weekend and can't wait to get back up there... I managed to squeeze a morning bow hunt in at Lake Ophelia on Monday. I saw one doe at 80 yards but she didn't close the distance.. I can't wait to get back...

Last Saturday morning in Lafitte. Kinda slow, saw a good bit of birds just not many in range...

November 19, 2008 at 10:35am

This was from last saturday on the Barataria side... two of us..6 birds... saw plenty but just not in range of us...still not bad

November 19, 2008 at 9:32am

busted this one in the early bow season at 5 yards while hunting on the ground... I wasn't sure what it was exactly walking through the needle grass on side of me... right before it popped out I went to full draw.. it stuck its head out onside of the palmetto bush and pinned its ears back when it saw me... i didn't know what to expect but i did know one thing... it didn't flench and wouldn't take that one more step i needed... getting the better of me i let it fly through the thin/half dead palmetto hitting the cat in the chest and exiting the rear end of the cat... he ran 60 yards before he let out a growling hiss that ensured me it was over... and my heart ran for another 160 yards before i could get up off the ground to go start tracking.... exciting stuff man... Bowtech Allegiance #70 Easton Axis 340's muzzy 100grn 4bld.... this is my second kill with this bow and hopefully there will be many more to follow..

November 19, 2008 at 9:27am

We scouted Friday before the season opener and found good numbers of grays and teal.... but... i think the ducks wrote the dates instead of the WLF... ha ha ha...the ducks played a disapearing act on us... Thank the good Lord for a decent number of pouldoo... even with that the pouldoo numbers aren't as high as normal for this place...it's usually much much higher... we ended opening morning with 43 pouldoo and 4 teal.. Sunday we hit Timken Island for hopes of change... finished even worse with 1 gray, 1 teal, 9 pouldoo... Hopefully some more will push in with the coming fronts...

These are a couple marsh deer in the Lafitte Barataria area. The pictures were taken in early to mid August with a wildview extreme 2 camera. The dates and times were all wrong...we forgot to set that when we put up the cameras.

The deer stopped hitting this feeder soon it showed up. This in South Alabama. Turnerville....

After all of the hunts I put in this year....finally drew blood... He's no monster but he still managed to get my blood pumping..

Being the deer are starting to rut down here, I got out early.. 12pm. I saw two deer at 2pm. at 390yds according to my range finders.... I watched them running back and forth through the cut grass for a while.. they disappeared for a while...then at 3:30pm they stepped back out so I pulled out the rattle bag and the buck roar and made some noise... with these deer being upwind of me they couldn't hear my calls...so I picked watched them through the scope for a second and was putting the rifle down when I caught movement from my left side... I looked over to see this buck walking straight to me..he heard it.. I set up on him in and waited for the shot... he presented it to me at 85yards broad side..i stopped him and tried my hardest to keep the crosshairs still... I squeezed one off and shot right over his back... the deer started to run straight towards me... i ejected one from my 30-30 and when I did...the deer stopped at 65 yards facing me... I put one in his chest.... He stumbled for another 10yds and fell over.... what a relief... I've been carrying my bow in the woods for a while and have seen a few deer just out of range of it.. I needed to get the bug out..so I pulled out the rifle... It did the job and I'm happy as can be...

Have any of yall ever tried the Buck Roar? results? I just purchased one yesterday and i'm pretty excited about it...I've heard really good things about it from others but haven't brought it to the woods yet. I know its that time of the year so I think my timing is perfect. Let me know if you have tried it and what happened... thanks!!

December 05, 2006 at 8:43am

I purchased a 35mm Stealth Cam 2years ago from Louisiana Archery. It sat in the case untill this year. Got it in the woods and the thing don't work... It shows that it is taking pictures..but the film never moved... The film didn't move from its original position when loading the camera.. I don't know whats the matter...maybe its junk... Do any of yall have any advice? I am thinking of going buy another camera...digital this time...unless someone may know a possible fix. Thanks!!

Anyone have any duck reports about the Lafitte, Barataria area? I believe the season opens this coming weekend and I haven't had the chance to go check things out...but was debating on going deer hunting or duck... It's been a while since there have been any amount of ducks down there. Just curious..

November 07, 2006 at 8:17am

I found out where all the ducks from down home went. There in Texas. I spent this past weekend hunting ducks in El Campo, Tx with South Texas Waterfowl (southtexaswaterfowl.com). The ducks are in extremly high numbers down there right now.... A blind of 5, we limited opening morning by 0730 and 0700 on Sunday morning... The guides were awesome and the lodging was nice.. We all had a great time... It's been a while since I've seen that many ducks and geese except for on TV. We killed mostly teal with some pintail, widgeon and a couple spoonys. Great place and people...

T-Rivers down on the lower end of 1077... hwy 22 right next to the bridge on the northeast side... I think you can put in at fairview state park just north of the 22 launch... 3 rivers road off of 190... 4th ave in covington... I'm sure there are a few more launches, but I'm new to the area and still learning.

I ended up putting the yak in on the Liberty at Jefferson Ave. Fished ultra light with tube jigs, road runners, and ripple shads. Brought home 11 shell crackers, 4 blue gill, and 2 bass. It was a really enjoyable paddle up there...very little boat traffic and pretty water.

Congrats on the beast bud!!! I'm happy for you. I still haven't tried the 3 rivers launch yet... I may give it a shot next weekend. I'm thinking the pipeline you and I talked about for this evening. Either there or the north side of Liberty. I skipped this morning to get a few things done....but should be out after lunch sometime.

I put the kayak in at 4th ave yesterday morning... water was like chocolate milk, but the area is really nice. I went up the Abita River then back towards the launch and up the Bogue to just south of the park... was a really nice paddle...only had 2 bites but I wasn't expecting much once I saw the water. Then I put in at main st. yesterday evening and headed north for a couple hours. The water was really clean there, but only 2 small bass went for a ride. One on a pop r and the other on a chartreuse spinner bait with a single colorado blade. Was really pretty up there also.

It was nice to get to chat with you out there on the Cane. It's a really beautiful spot. I ended up making a follow up trip there on the 3rd I believe. The water was much cleaner. I didn't knock it out the park but managed a couple nice bass (one just under 3lbs) and some goggleye. Almost all were caught on a chug bug. I lost a brand new lip gripper scale, right around where the first big osprey nest is, while weighing one of the bass...lol. I'll try to redeem myself soon with some fly gear on perch and goggleye.

A comment titled: Hogs, Gators and Bears in response to a report titled: Lethal hunting stands R.Y. WMA

A bud of mine and myself were scouting in Lake Ophelia a couple 3-4 years ago.. The slough we were paying attention to had dried up.. There was only one spot next to a big cypress that had a dug out hole with water... maybe 20' in diameter.. In that hole was about a 10-11' alligator... around that hole were tons of hog tracks.. within 50 yards of that spot were bunches of fresh bear sign.. we ended up walking up within 20 yards of a few hogs really close to the same spot..

My only bear incounter, while on stand, was in Lake Ophelia... which didn't surprise me, because there is bear sign all over the place in there.

The joys of hunting Louisiana!! many different species of critters roaming around...some might hunt you.

try big branch WMA.. it's not to far from you and if you can put your hands on a pirogue you should be able to get to a few ponds.. personally I haven't hunted it but know somebody who does.. look it up online and you will see the specs..

how is the bottom around that place? hard? soft?
The reason I am asking is because we have two different types of mudboats, one inboard 96hp subaru and a 35hp gator tail... if the bottom is slush, the subaru is the better deal.. but if it's hard the gator tail is much better.. and thanks for your help fellaz!! it is much appreciated. I will be out there this coming weekend.. the duck hunting in Lafitte is really bad man..so time to try another spot

A comment titled: bears in response to a report titled: Lake Ophelia Bear

I guess it'll be just the same as Tensas with the population before long. This is the first bear i've seen up there in three years hunting off and on... i've seen bear tracks in several different locations within Lake Ophelia but never stumbled across one. If it was legal to hunt black bears in Louisiana, this bear would have been a trophy. He is respectable by any standards across the United States and most other provinces.. I would guess him to be at or just over 300lbs. and if up on hine legs atleast 6'-7' ... just a monster of a black bear.

You can put 33's on the truck without the lift... the only problem is when you turn they will rub on the inside of the finder, on the spring and on the frame behind the tire... I put 33's on my tundra without the lift... i went to the MUDHOLE in Kenner and talked to craig... the leveling kit wouldn't have fixed the problem... i went with a 3" lift all the way around.. but the tires still rub on the spring and frame.. it doesn't touch the fenders anymore.. but there is only two ways to fix that problem... either put wheel spacers on the hub (1" or better) or get rims with a negative offset... either way, the tire needs to be further away from the truck... I put 33x11.50 on... It's been about 6 months and i still haven't put the spacers or new rims...but it is a little aggravating not being able to turn all the way... i make some really wide turns.. ha ha ha... eventually i'll work up the extra cash and get it done... good luck.. shoot me an email if you have any questions about it... i have done my homework on this issue

It wasn't a problem Charlie. I told your son that I might be in the same shoes one day and need his help. I know he would do the same for me. The big thanks needs to go to Agent Keith Fox and the Federal Agent for leaving their off time from their families to save some people's lives. My hat is off to them.

A comment titled: let it rip in response to a report titled: Davis Pond Diversion discussed in Waggaman Tonight !!!

i would like to see it at full capacity year round... the more fresh sediment dumped into the wetlands from the river the better the marsh will be.. it will increase all aspects of fresh water marsh life in years to come.. if at half capacity it will take twice as long to build up... I say let it rip and reep the benefits sooner.
