GREAT ARTICLE

Mr. Lambert has been telling this story as loud and often as anyone in the state and it is time for Louisiana's fisherman and hunters to get behind him. After spending the last 10 years hunting the Mississippi delta and growing up in in the Lake Pontchartrain basin I have witnessed first hand the effects of salt water intrusion and our land being washed away. The only hope we have is FRESHWATER DIVERSION PROJECTS. It is amazing to see the power of the Mississippi River. We complain about DU short stopping ducks but the ducks are noT stopping short they are flying north because there is no habitat. We must join together in a unified front and demand that the BP money be spent on the COASTAL MASTER PLAN.

Does anyone know the tentative dates for the 2015-2016 Duck season.

July 20, 2015 at 8:53am

Had to end my season a little early, stuck back at work and still telling stories and wishing I was duck hunting. Got to spend about 13 nights at the duck camp with my dad, sons, and great friends. And the bonus was this year we had awesome hunting!!!!Thanks to all that post pictures and keep all of us stuck in the office dreaming of good duck hunts.

With the Federal government shut down I was thinking about going Red Snapper fishing this weekend in Federal waters. Anybody want to join me?

This was the worst we have ever seen on Tangipahoa River. I raised my camp over 2 foot after Katrina/Rita and got about 6 inches. Most of the camps had some water and a few were completely blown away. The wildlife is taking a beating I don't see how any deer can survive this much water. Any word from Venice? My dad has a camp on Pass-a-loutre and we are wondering if its still there?

I recently broke the skimmer(depth finder)on my 2010 Blazer Bay. The replacemnt comes with a sealed wire from the back of the boat to the GPS system. Does anyone have any tricks to pull the wire through the hull. My son and i tried for about an hour but could not fish it thru. He has small hands and ran his hand thru the hole under the console while i pushed a string thru from the rear. I know it was close but I think the wire make a turn and i had a straight rod pushing it thru. Any help would be appreciated.

I know this doesn't relate to Hunting or fishing but maybe you guys can help.Yesterday evening my wife let our 3 year old Cairn terrier out and she didn't return. I live across the street from Memorial Park in Ponchatoula. I think someone must have picked her up thinking she was lost. We normally keep a collar on her but took it off to give her a bath and didn't put it back on her. She was last seen 1/4/10 at 4:30 in the afternoon. 985-969-1475

I have access to a blind southwest of Kaplan, thinking about making the 3 hour drive tomorrow. Nobodys hunted the blind this year. Any reports would be great before we make the drive.

Went down the big river Sunday to cut the jungle away from the camp and haul some supplies, water, gas. I'm starting to get nervous, there are no ducks. We rode south pass down to the mouth and stopped at few cuts and saw nothing. I checked the camp log from last year and the last week of October we were full of ducks on the WMA. Any thoughts on where they are?

Has anyone heard back from the Dept of Wildlife and Fisheries on the White Lake Lottery? I submitted an application and haven't heard anything.

Maybe this is a little premature but has anyone been down pass a loutre, we have a camp just past Dennis pass. Hope it's still there.

September 03, 2008 at 1:09pm

We had a great season in Venice this year wish i was down there today. I have one more hunt this year, a White Lake lottery hunt tommorrow. What a way to end a awesome season.

January 19, 2008 at 10:53am

I know he is ready to go back to Paw Paw's camp. Don't worry buddy schools out soon and we'll be back. Timothy killed his first limit and even had a double during the first split.

December 14, 2007 at 11:49am

The numbers aren't there but we have killed some pretty ducks this year.

It's habitat, we are loosing it. Not a little, a lot. Thousands of square miles of it. It's not de-icers, flooded food, mojos or any other BS reason. Louisiana was blessed with the Mississippi River that fed a highly productive ecosystem for thousands of years and we came along and cut it off. Choked it down and cut up the marsh. We are seeing the results of habitat loss, just like the fisherman.

agreed public land is exactly that, public land.

We can bring it back to life, we need to give it fresh water. We need to let nature do what it has done before. We need to open up the Mississippi River on the west side Lake Maurepas. There is a diversion project in the state master plan for a sediment/freshwater diversion on the west side of the Lake. We need to hold our elected officials accountable and make sure we do not squander this BP money and spend it on something else.

I'll watch the pitchforks, I think sometimes we think that this is the only platform to discuss these types of issues. I know there is more support than you think for the earlier open dates. Ryan Lambert was on Don Dubuc earlier in the season supporting last years opener and I recon he's got a little more stroke than me or you. It's crazy to not want to open early, there are no ducks in the coastal area right now.

I will be at the Ponchatoula meeting to try to convince the powers that be to leave the opener where it was this year. I hunt in Venice and for the past 5 years we have had more ducks in Oct than in late Jan. We also got to have a real split this year instead of last year which ended on a Sunday and reopened on Saturday. I wish they would open in October, we shoot more ducks.

January 30, 2016 at 1:44pm

Why is a freshwater diversion not feasible? Is there not one happening right now with the opening of the spillway. There is a diversion planned in the state master plan. We would see real numbers of ducks if we had a large scale diversion on the west side of Lake Maurepas.

I grew up on south pass right across from the SLU camp, my dad shed soft crabs. I killed my first deer in a big living cypress tree on what was the south end of Joyce off of old 51 (the south end now is about three miles from that tree). That was 1988. That tree is now dead and you can barely walk in that area with low water; forget about walking this year with the high water. I now have a camp on Tangipahoa river and spend a bunch of time fishing, hunting, birdwatching, or just enjoying the view from Tickfaw River to the Tchefuncte River. My dad who is a retired biologist, fisherman, trapper preached to us for years that the only thing that can help this estuary is DIVERSIONS. He recognized this 40 years ago. If we don't have a big real diversion we can all forget about the cypress forest and habitat. We should already be opening the Bonne Carrie every year in the fall and winter. Why not? We could close it before the hot weather and algae blooms. Why not open the diversion canal to the Mississippi RIver? Isn't that why it was dug and named the diversion canal? FRESHWATER IS THE ONLY OPTION!!! FRESHWATER IS THE KEY!! Yet we cannot even get publications like this website Louisiana Sportsman to fully completely get behind diversions and make it the #1 issue for all sportsman in this great state. We can spend money spraying salvinia, building levees, dredging islands, whatever it's all for naught. Until we get real volume diversions we are DONE. DIVERSIONS ARE THE ANSWER AND WE MUST START NOW!!!! We can argue about DU and Delta and the chicken scratch money they spend while our elected officials piss away the 50 billion BP money that fell from the sky. Its time for us to unite and demand real diversions from Morgan City to Pearl RIver we are all affected!! LOOK AT ALL THE LAND WE ARE DUMPING INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO!!!

Someone emailed me from this post asking me a question but you cannot reply to the email sent through the website. Send me an email at brad@berrylandcampers.com. And to answer your question I think it would be hairy trying to run from Venice marina to main pass in a 17ft boat.

Water is too fresh right now, it is clearing up and looks good though. I ran trot lines this weekend and caught a bunch of catfish that were full of small shad (menhaden) which is a good sign.

I spent all weekend at cleaning my camp on tangipahoa river and saw dead fish all weekend. We were really starting to catch fish(bass) on the river the last two years, I guess thats going to be over now.

No Bird Dog you make the point great when you state that you told someone about YOUR pond... BIRD DOG you don't have a pond not on any WMA in the state no matter how much you scout it or how how close you live or whether or not you believe you were the first guy to find that spot. There is no one reading or writing this report that was the FIRST person to discover any spot. We must all share and be respectful. i think alot of hunters believe that they have some kind of birthrite to some of these hunting areas because they've been there for years well the next guy may work just as hard to kill ducks.

pul deaux and duckhunter7777 you guys are still missing the point! We understand that its public and its first come first serve but when you tell someone about your pond just bein friendly and the next day they are in it something is wrong!
