Haven’t had turkeys here in years. Gonna be fun in the spring too.

Any private dove hunts available near Gonzales for this Saturday? I know Sherburne and Sandy Hollow have hunts but looking for something closer to Gonzales.

My nephew and I fished Venice downriver Friday afternoon and with a good tide caught 42 bass and 2 reds. Flipping the canes with soft plastics gave us a lot of fun and a good fish fry coming later this week

The deer are eating the red mulberry leaves and berries before they even get ripe. They did the same last year. I hope they leave some for me.

Come along on a little quail hunt with me and my two brothers and a dog in Tennessee a few weeks ago. Slidell raised boys now living in Memphis, Prairieville and the Woodlands, but still love to get together and hunt. First time I've ever quail hunted and first year to hunt for my brothers and the dog, Hudson. What a time!

Right after Christmas we did a little bass fishing with spinnerbaits in Venice and then followed that up with some deer hunting in Natchez where a nice 3.5 year old buck scraped up a sapling next to my stand.

Most things in life come with positive and negative aspects. Same with bow releases. I've used two different but similar types through the years. I've gone over a couple of considerations for a 'hook' style and a 'single jaw' style release in this video. Which would you choose?

I planted a couple of small soy bean plots and documented the process in this video. I hope they will continue to be successful and I will update with pictures as summer goes along. Enjoy.

Masters Casters Christian Bass Club held our monthly tournament at Okhissa Lake for the second time this year and for the second time this year a new club record has been set. Congratulations to Charles Deranger with 5 fish for 26.19#. Details and pictures on the club FB page.

This pic shows broken tops in the red mulberry bushes I planted a couple of years ago. This is the first year they've made berries and something is breaking the top branches. You'll notice the broken branches that are within the browse level of the deer have practically every berry and leaf eaten off. After thinking it over I think the coons are climbing to get the berries, breaking the branches which then fall over allowing the deer to clean off the the leaves and remaining berries. Has anyone else had this happen and can vouch for this explanation? I've got plenty of pics of the deer eating the mulberries at other bushes but I didn't have a camera on these. I've corrected that now and may have photo proof of what is going on next time I go back to the camp. But it's just as likely they'll move over to a different bush the camera is not watching. I'll post pics if I get proof. Let me know your thoughts.

I've been trying to force myself to learn to fish a little spin cast rod and reel but it's been nothing but a pain in the rear and I'd like a little input on what to do to fix it. After 20 or so minutes the line twists up so much it knots up. I don't want to use a swivel and I know I shouldn't have to but I don't know how else to prevent it from happening. I'm using 8 lb test which is the right size for the reel I use and I'm throwing either a shaky head finesse type worm or a fluke or senko. I try to let the line untwist a little at the end of each cast if it seems to need it but it still happens. My next move is to get this thing figured or break it over my thigh and forget the whole bad idea. Hoping for the first but not too ashamed to do he second. Any thoughts on what I can do different?

Got in 2 hours of fishing after pulling the kids around Okhissa Lake on a tube till they couldn't go any more and heading back home. Only got bit once but it was worthwhile.

It's getting to be that time to start getting the preliminary work done for food plots. Here is a little bit of a long winded (but I think helpful) video on preparing fall food plots by spraying with herbicide using a 4 wheeler prior to disking. Using a tractor mounted sprayer is quicker and easier, but many people like me are not planting enough area to justify that expense and this works very well.

Late getting the cameras out this year but got a nice one right away. A young one but the future looks good if there's a few more like this kicking around the place. I'm hoping to see some older class deer regardless of antler size.

Anybody else notice a near absence of banana spiders this year? Not that I mind as I HATE spiders, but just wonder if anyone else has noticed the same and if that is any indicator of anything out of balance in nature?

For those who may be considering buying a new bow, here are my thoughts on the one I bought (Hoyt Power Max) compared to my old one (Hoyt XTec) and two others (Bowtech Carbon Icon and Hoyt Defiant). Shout out to Bowies Outfitters in Baton Rouge for all their help in my decision making and answering a lot of questions.

Took an afternoon fishing trip Friday with a friend from Gonzales to Venice and had a fun time. Good times with a great guy.

I see a lot of posts regarding all kinds of saltwater species in Baptiste Collette but I am wondering if the bass fishing is as good there as it is in the downriver places. I don't see any reason it would not be and on those occasions when you may not want/be able to make the downriver run, it would be nice to have good bass fishing that close.

This is a trip my son and I took last week between deer hunts to bass fish in Delacroix. Enjoy.

I have always had the hard undercover tonneau. It sounds like you are not interested in that one but I like several features. One is that I can walk on it which is handy sometimes when launching and sometimes it’s nice to be able to set something fairly heavy on it. A second thing I like is that I can access the full size of the bed by easily removing it. With the fold up or roll up, you still have a length taken up by the stored cover. If it’s a soft roll up cover that may be a very small lost space. Another important feature is only the tonneau cover will keep water completely out. Lastly they cost a little less. Good luck on whatever you choose.

great listen. This is very bad stuff and I don't think everyone has had a chance to get the scoop and understand this yet. This can potentially ruin deer hunting and I don't mean make it harder or fewer deer. I mean NOBODY will be ALLOWED to hunt deer, but nobody will want to for fear of human infection. It has been discussed a lot but there is still a long way to go to get everyone understanding just what's going on here. Its not a scare tactic or blown out of porportion....its the real deal, something to be VERY concerned about and not take lightly.

For best results, weed kill about 3 weeks before disking and planting. If tall weeds, mow them 1-2 weeks before applying weed kill.

those dang things still giving you fits I see. I keep hearing rumblings about a bear season in LA but I don't guess there is one yet. That might end some of your misery if it starts. Those things are something!

January 16 at 1:58pm

Yes it is brackish. You can use a suction mount. I used a clip on mount to windshield but it's not the best way. You can permanently mount a stick on mount also. Many option available. Good luck.

I'll second that question, especially given the poor condition of the Rousseau cane due to the scale pest invasion and the close proximity of the eye of Nate. Anyone been there to see if we lost any passes, bayous, cuts, etc?

The thing I like about that idea is having the release hooked to the loop at all times. One less issue to deal with at moment of truth. I'll take a look at one. Thanks for bringing it up.

I have thought about it but have not tried it. Do you find that it is difficult to hold back when you're waiting for your shot without having the wrist strap to help? That's what kept me from trying one.

A comment titled: Re: Summer soybean plot in response to a report titled: Summer soybean plot

weeds are abundant, the soybeans are short, but they are doing what I wanted them to do and that's keeping the deer around. Not pretty soybeans, but successful nonetheless.

A comment titled: Re: Summer soybean plot in response to a report titled: Summer soybean plot

The soybeans are not looking any bigger than the last photos 3 weeks ago because the deer are keeping them mowed well. I was hoping they would be much taller but they are doing what they were designed to do and that is drawing and keeping deer around. Here are a few pics.

got mine, filled it out and glad to do it. I only hunted one day in LA and it was for squirrels but every data point matters and I want to help our state manage wildlife better than all the others. Everyone that got a survey please take a couple of minutes and fill it out.

Yes, definitely not bear, I'm pretty sure I'd have more signs and evidence. Btw, I'm getting ready to put in some soybeans at the months end. Looking forward to seeing how it works out. You still planning on planting yours again?
