Brian from Texas battled this bruiser redfish for over 40 minutes on the Homerun Charters and Lodge 25' Shearwater. Captain Brian Sherman thought several times that this had to be a Jack Crevelle, but no, it was a BRUISER REDFISH!!!! Great job to Brian from Texas for being patient and not ever trying to horse this big red!!!!

Yes, you need to take two boats. But, now you can take an inshore trip with inshore guides to the rigs, we can catch snapper. Out of Venice you can fish 4 on one boat and 3 on another and run together so you are fishing along side each other all day. We do this all the time with larger groups. Call Home Run Charters at the Venice Marina and we can set you up with two inshore trips for snapper and such, we just can't go passed the Nine Mile limit. (504)909-TUNA ask for Evey!!!!! You and your guests should have a Offshore Landing Permit which is free and available on the LW&F licensing website - you will be visiting there for your licenses anyway!!!!

There are alot of areas you can fish. I am partial to Venice because we are guides there. But there are several closer areas along highway 23. Lake Hermitage, Myrtle Grove, Happy Jack, Port Sulpur, Buras and then Venice. All have incredible fishing at certain times. The river is high in Venice making it tricky, but the further north launches should be great. When fishing in Happy Jack, Port Sulphur and Grand Bayou areas you need to watch the tide. A falling tide from the high is a great time to fish these areas. Small grass islands and small bayous and ponds draining out hold fish. Use your ears!!! Many times I hear them feeding back in the grass in tight areas, I listen then paddle back thru the grass and small canals to them. you will find them feeding on small crabs and shrimp in tight little ponds!
It takes a while to learn the area's but enjoy learning! Be adventurous. CaptainBrian@KayakVeniceLa.com

The weather has been difficult!!!! The river is extremely high and has the water muddy and messed up! March, can be great fishing - it's just one of those springs. Sometimes we go out and get 20 or more fish and the next day we catch 2 or 3! Sorry you found it tough! I hate to tell you, but next week it could be crazy good!!!! We catch 20 to 45 lb fish in the areas you fished this past weekend. Wish you great fishing on your next trip to the Venice-Buras area!!!
PS we went bow fishing last night could not see a thing the water was so dirty in Happy Jack!!

I would go to Venice for that! The Homerun Lodge sleeps 23 people and they have two 32 Yellowfins that can fish 12 persons and they can hire out a couple more boats if you need more people fishing.

March 30, 2015 at 1:50pm

Look the fish are biting in Venice and Buras when the weather is not all goofed up! The past two weeks we have had terrible NE winds and now rain, if it would settle down and stay near 79 degrees the fishing will be great for your trip, bring some gold spoons - the bull reds have been eating them up. A popping cork with LSU or Lemondrop has been very productive on smaller reds and black drum.

Go to Pack and Paddle events - they let you try many different kayaks and find out what feels comfortable to you. I would recommend the Jackson Coosa HD if you like to paddle or the Hobie outback if you prefer foot pedals - you will be happy with either.
You could come fishing with us for a day and see what you like, Kayak fishing is about keeping yourself in position!!!! It is incredible, but you must learn techniques to keep yourself in position and on the fish!!!!

I recommend you investigate Kayak fishing, find a cheap kayak $150 to $300 and start out. Go to seminars on fishing by Massey's outfitters, CCA groups in each Parish and learn to fish close to shore and bayous - then work your way up over time into bigger yak or even a small boat.

if you want to try it first, give me a call it is reasonably inexpensive to go out with us but the knowledge you will gain on the trip will help you exponentially!!!

Get some buddies together and come down to Venice. We caught and released over 150 fish on Saturday's afternoon trip with 3 guests from Denham Springs.
The cost is very reasonable. $115 per person with three people - we provide kayaks, bait, rods and tackle and guide!

Includes 5 hours plus of fishing and fish cleaning.

There are several areas we fish even when inshore and offshore fishing are a scratch due to weather. Many protected bayou's in the area you can fish even in 15-20 mph winds and be successful. Feel free to give us a call. We fish from Venice to Myrtle Grove - 45 mile stretch of Plaquemines Parish in kayaks.
