My daughter got selected for the youth hunt on White Lake. I've never been to this area before and it's about a 3 hour drive for me. Any advice or comments about this area would be appreciated. I've read what I could find on the internet, but wasn't able to find too much information.

My two kids and I had a good opening morning Saturday near Pointe aux Chien. Killed 6 teal and 1 pouldeau. Brought the kids make an afternoon hunt in Lake Boeuf for the youth weekend opening. They killed 8 pouldeau.

This is one of the reds caught by my daughter in the ponds near Bason's Marina. The water was fairly clear and the fish had a lot of color. My daughter decided to release it because she said it was too pretty to keep. Gotta love those lil girls.

I want to take my two kids to Lake Boeuf to hunt pool-doe. We have been duck hunting all season and have been doing OK, but I want to bring them somewhere that they can do a little more shooting. I have a surface drive with a boat blind, and I would like any tips or advice that can make this a productive hunt for my kids. I have never been to this area before. Thank you.

I've only hunted Wax lake a couple times and every time, we planned to be there on a low tide. The water went from dry land or a couple inches of water to over 3' of water depth in a couple hours. This was on a normal day with no wind extremes.

If you arrive on a high tide and the water falls out on you, you could spend a long time on the sand flats waiting for the tide to rise.

This is the only area I have hunted in Louisiana where this occurs.

You should be fine as long as you stay in the main channels. The area is full of sandflats. I would suggest going on a rising tide. The other big risk is fog. I would recommend having a GPS to help with navigation.

I love reading his articles. That dude is hardcore and a little on the crazy side. Reminds me of a few guys I grew up with. Lol.

A couple years ago on a really slow morning I shot a merganser that locked his wings and headed straight for my head. It hit the back of the blind and nearly passed through it. Looked like a big giant lawn dart headed straight for my head. I yelled like a little girl. Lol.

So what do y'all propose? Just let the marsh continue to erode away and nothing be done. For those of us who live in the affected area, it's a matter of whether or not my children will be able to live in the same area that we do now. I understand that most of the marsh is private and is owned by the oil companies, and using 'public funds' to restore this property is questionable. If we don't restore/replace some private marsh then we will lose all of the public marsh as well.

Who are the biggest taxpayers in the state? Isn't a large portion of this money from the BP settlement?

Of course this is not an ideal situation and the oil companies should have been more responsible in the past, but not sure what can be done to fix that now.

It's easy to point out what the problem is, but what is your solution?

I don't know why, but those are my 13 year old son's favorite ducks to shoot. We kill a mix of ducks and for some reason he gets excited to kill a ruddy duck.

I was in the marsh near PAC Sunday afternoon and only saw a couple mottled ducks. No teal yet. Hopefully they show up.

I prefer the old format where I could see all the most recent postings without having to figure out what category something was posted in.

There may be a way to do this already, but I would suggest having a way to see all of the most recent posts no matter what category they are in. I would exclude classified ads from this like they have always been.

If my grandma, God rest her soul, ever found out that I breasted a duck, I think she would come down and whip my butt or haunt me or something. Lol.

To each his own, but I have to agree with the original post. I think breasting out a duck is a waste. Both my son and daughter hunt with me and I'm trying to teach them the same way that I was brought up, which is if you kill it you better plan to clean it and eat it.

A comment titled: No gators in response to a report titled: White Lake Rice Fields

We hunted the White Lake rice fields opening day and their were no gators. The water is very shallow and not connected to any canals. I would be surprised if any gators are there. We killed our limit of 18 ducks with a mixed bag of teal, grays, pintail, redheads, one woodie, and a couple spoonbill. Saw a bunch of geese, but they wouldn't come close. Place is covered in teal and spoonbill, but we saved a few shots for some bigger ducks that flew a little later. Good luck.

My daughter and I had a great time on the White Lake youth hunt. She killed her limit with a mix of teal, ringnecks, and spoonbill. Everything was passing shots and it took her 67 shots to kill her 6 ducks. We must have seen over 1,000 ducks and geese that morning. She has a sore shoulder and memories that will last a lifetime. Definitely a beautiful place.

Bloody,

Thanks for the generous offer, but we have what we need to duck hunt. Both my son and daughter have been duck hunting with me for a few years. I've always let my kids blow my calls as well and now they have their own. When my kids were really young, I couldn't wait to take them hunting and fishing and now my friends that used to come with me don't get to come as much. My kids rarely let me leave without them in the boat. Thanks again for the offer and we are really excited about this hunt.

I don't have any experience with that model, but my 9 year old son shoots the 20 gauge Mossberg Mini Bantam and my daughter shoots the 20 gauge youth 500 Bantam. Both of these guns are very light and designed for kids.
