Advice on a new bow

Reply

Hey, I thought I'd bounce something off of y'all. Lately I've had the itch to buy a new compound bow. I shoot a PSE Polaris that I've had since the late 80's. Not a speed demon, but it'll do the job. Now, I added some modern accessories like Limbsavers, New sights, shoot Carbon Express arrows etc, and it's quiet and reasonably accurate, but it does have it's issues. I mean let's face it, it's old. I don't shoot far with it, about 25 - 30 yards tops. I can't see farther than that where I hunt anyway. I can see a way off through the woods, but as far as taking a shot, it's thick in there and I simply don't have much room to take a long shot. I need a new string, and my shots seem to "corkscrew" downrange sometimes. Looks like the points fly true, but the vanes sometimes make a small spiral in flight. Understand me I'm not talking about the normal spin from the vanes, they "corkscrew" downrange viewed from behind. I mean it's reasonably accurate and it will do, and I keep all my shots in the kill zone. I've killed rabbits, a coon, and a few squirrels with it. Probably needs to be tuned. But sometimes I'd like a new rig. I'm sort of on the fence. Buy a new one? Spruce up my old one? If I do buy a new one, I'm looking to spend around $400.00. What would be a good buy in that price range? Set up and everything, maybe with a 7 arrow quiver. I like shooting a few rabbits while I'm on stand, so I like a big quiver. Thanks in advance. Later.

lil bit of both
Well with all the work and add ons your having to do with this old bow you might be better off gettin a lighter smaller and faster bow. All the stuff you just put on your old bow transfer to the new bow. You wont need to buy a package but just the bow itself. Bear makes some good bows as do PSE that arent too bad on the pocketbook. Hoyt and Bowtech good as well but might get up there in price. Go check out cabelas and bass pro. They running some good sales about now.

good bows
i wold stick with PSE, or if you would like to switch brands, look into Parker, Fred Bear, and Martin.

stay away from matthews's lower end bows. they are made much more cheaply than other brand's bows of comparable price. half of the price of any matthews is to pay for their jugrnaut of a marketing department.

Thanks Deadly! I was sort of thinking along those lines. I'm not really concerned about smokin' fast speed, although I don't want a deer to duck the arrow when I shoot. I figure most new bows on the market probably shoot carbon arrows around 300 fps. Plenty fast. Thanks!

Fred Bear
Mr Coon, You mentioned Fred Bear. Do you, or anybody, know where to find those old Fred Bear videos to either watch online or download? Real cool stuff. Ted Nugent wrote a song about him "...I felt his touch, I felt his guiding hand, the buck was mine forever more!... because of Fred Bear, I walk down these trails again..." Good stuff!

pse or bear
id go either bear lights our (small, fast and light) or the pse brute (brute strength, speed, a little bit bigger). but im looking into buying a bear lights out just because of its smallness and speed. accuracy idk about, but im about to buy one and sell my pse infinity.

New bow
I would go look around and test shoot a few different bows. Then I would order from huntersfriend.com. I did that last year and got a great bow for the best price, fully rigged and ready to hunt as their package says. When I got the bow in and shot it, it was only off 1 inch to the left. One minor adjustment and I was dead on, and this was my first bow ever.

By the way, you can add and subtract from their packages and they will adjust the price accordingly.

Martin Cheetah
I was in the same predicament last year. I did my research and tested several bows. I setteled on the Martin Cheetah. It is an extremely accurate and forgiving bow and can shoot with the best of them. Google search it and read the reviews. One shop tested it and immediately orderd 3 or 4 hundred because they new it would dominate the bows of this price range. Good luck to you and let us know what you decide.

Hey stingray,

A friend of mine has shot competion for PSE, and Martin. You can definitely find a good bow in the $400 range. Don't listen to the nay sayers. They are the guys that feel the need to by expensive euipment. Little man syndrome. If it aint expensive its not any good. I'll put my Cheetah against the more expensive bows. Maybe not quite as fast but just as accurate and very quite. Also put my cheap simmons scope up against any big shots Leuplod or any other scope in a shooting competion. Very confident out to 350 yards with only a $150 scope.

Kronik
Bought the Red Head Kronik package from Bass Pro for under 400 bucks and have been very happy with it. Lable says its made by Diamond.

hmm...
Diamond Rock runs around 400 I think and is exactly the same as my bow. I shoot a diamond triumph. Very sweet bow, no bells and whistles just a small, quiet, accurate bow.

Diamond Rock
I bought The Rock last year from huntersfriend.com. Very good bow...accurate, fast, silent, and very little shock on your hand. I have been very with my purchase from them.

PSE
I shot a Polaris for years. Was in the same boat last year. I went to Cabelas and shot bows on their little range. Ended up with a Parker for $550 with carbon arrows out the door. Go test out some new gear. I know from experience, almost everything they sell will feel better and shoot faster than the old Polaris!

Good Luck.

Bow choices
Lots of great info. Been doing some homework and narrowing choices down. I'm leaning toward Bear Showdown, Martin Cheetah, and PSE Stinger. Not necessarily in that order, but in that ball park. Still looking. Also, I'm not against looking into the rigs y'all are wanting to sell. So far I've just been looking at new bows but I'm ok with used ones in good condition. I don't care if there's a few scratches. Seems you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get something that will shoot fast enough, quiet, and accurate. Some of the ones I've looked at have 5 star customer reviews. All of them have good reviews. Several packages ready to hunt around $400.00. I may just swap out my s-coil, peep, rest, and other add-ons and go for even less. Getting pumped up!

Made my decision
Hey guys, I went and bought myself a brand new Bear Showdown yesterday. Quiver, sight, etc. included. Put my s-coil stabilizer on it and some string leeches, good to go! Shoots nice, tight groups and easy on the wallet. I'm pleased as can be. Can't wait to "whack'em and stack'em"! Thanks for all the advice. Later guys.
