Alligator Gar Fishing

Reply

Hey I was wonderin if anyone could give me some advice on some good alligator gar fishing around the southwest portion of the state. Really anywhere is fine, but I live in the Lake Charles area so its more convenient. Also what kinda gear do I need in order to go after the monsters?

i went down the atchafalaya yesterday looking for catfish and couldn't keep the gars ooff our line. its a long trip for oyu but it may or may not be worth it. you would definately need some braid and if you can find some lady fish i think is the best garfish bait... we were catching them on live bait(mullet, shiners, pogey etc...) but we caught some cats q one big flathead on jugs... good luck

I would recommend launching around the Gibbstown bridge and cruising along it finding marshes along the intercoastal. We hunted gar there last year and there are some great places along the intercoastal. I think your best bet would be to head towards east along the intercoastal. I would even launch at the grand chenier park and head upstream; we hunted some big gar up that way. We launched at the grand chenier park one evening and hunted at night and landed 12 gar with the smallest being 3 1/2 ft.

Sabine and Orange Area
Have you ever tried the southern parts of the Sabine River?
We bowfish on the northern parts of the river near the dam and see lots. Also What about those bodies of water by Orange, TX. Thats only a short drive from you but that just looks like Gar country over there. Finally if you really wanna get into em head to the Trinity River between LC and Houston. They say the gar there are unreal.

Ok, I would recommend jug fishing for gar's. It's not as fun as catching them on rod and reel, but you can cover more ground and it still is fun. I use 1 gallon jugs with a 16' rope along with a 12' leader. I use cut mullet with the leader ran through the bait. Along the Gibbstown bridge area is good spot.

As far as the picture, that is a nice fish but no way possible it is 5'. Unless you are over 8' tall that is........Definately a fishin 'story'.... Good eattin gar still though....
