Wahoo Plentiful at Venice Winter Invitational

The 5th Annual Venice Invitational Tournament wrapped up last night at Venice Marina. Although the event hosts inshore, offshore and dive catagories, the wahoo action garnered most of the attention with plentiful catches of the toothy striped speedsters hitting the docks.

Pictured are (L to R) Phillip Darbonne, Donald Guice, Marshall O'Neal, Jamie Gregory and S.J. Guercio of Baton Rouge, LA. with the 7 wahoo that they caught during a trip with Capt. Bill Delabar and Jeff Thiery. Unfortunately, these guys didn't register for the tournament.

The guys told me, "Due to the rough seas, three of us got the 'chum line' started early and that's what made the fish bite."

Also pictured is Capt. Hunter Caballero's crew with their prize winning wahoo which weighed a whopping 79-pounds and took top honors in the wahoo division.

Getting in on the bottom fishing action was Capt. Brett Falterman and the crew from Southside Cafe. Brett boated a 23.40 scamp which took 1st place in the grouper division and the rest of his crew swept the division. Brett's scamp will place in the top 10 in the state record books.

After the awards were handed out, participants were treated to boiled crawfish, roast pig and plenty of cold beer.
