I have a 4 month old lab that I plan on making a duck dog and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on any videos or books that I can follow? I want to teach her myself and I have already taught her the basics, any info / tips help thanks.

Richard Wolters - water dog

Best training book ever written. I train labs based off this book. I’ve probably read it 10+ times.

Nothing better than a you and your dog.

In addition to a book, I would suggest joining or at least going to a hunting retriever club day. There is normally years of experience there, other people (along with you taking your turn) can throw dummies for your dog and you can handle him, and you can get some experience that you just cannot get out of a book.

Dog people are good people and most remember when they started and are not uppity, well, there are always exceptions but for the most part you will be helped.
I am not too familiar with where the groups are now, been out of it for some years but there used to be groups in Houma, Baton Rouge, Bonnet Carre spillway and quite a few other places. Go to United Kennel Club or AKC and look up hunting retriever clubs.

Just go check them out, it will be worth it and it will make for a better partnership with your buddy.

Regards,
Chuck

Water Dog is extremely out dated and really wasn't that good in its day. Richard Wolters was a good writer for self help books but NOT a dog trainer! Yes many have used it and I do have an old copy but there are better books and programs. Contact the Pontchartrain Hunting Retriever Club, you can find them on FB and I think they have a website. They train and meet in the Spillway. For books/videos try Bill Hillman Training a Retriever Puppy, Danny Farmer, Mike Lardy, Rick Stawski Fowl Dogs, or Evan Graham's Smartworks. What ever one you choose, stick with the program. No short cuts and be very patient. Even better than this and if you have time go hang out with a pro and learn first hand. I know several in the area if you need information.
