When and what to plant?

Reply

Hey guys, I am leasing about 500 acres that backs up to the amite river. We have mixed hardwoods and pines. I am trying to figure out the best time to plant spring/summer plots, and what is best to plant in this area. We are in the process of getting the soil tested and adding lime. We are trying to hold as many deer as possible as well as make the property attractive to turkeys and other game. Thanks for the help.

depends on how big your plots are. If you have any that are 20 acres + I'd plant soybeans or alfalfa. For smaller plots, your easiest and cheapest option is clover. Not only is it easy to grow, you can throw it out now without tilling. These rain showers will sow it into the soil because the seeds are so small. It'll continue to grow year after year also. It is one of the few crops that can outlast deer pressure. We hunt in Mississippi (SE Zone) and have success keeping deer around on 450 acres. Just be careful if you cut the clover (which is recommended once or twice a year) not to run over fawns. I've seen quite a few of them over the years laying in the plot and would've been processed prematurely if i wouldn't have stopped the tractor.

For best results, weed kill about 3 weeks before disking and planting. If tall weeds, mow them 1-2 weeks before applying weed kill.
