Re: Cull buck?

That’s a personal choice. The deer is obviously at least 2 1/2 yrs old and with good genetics should be carrying at least 6 or 8 points. With that being said the King Ranch did an intensive cull removal program on 10,000 acres for several years and compared deer quality of rest of ranch and it made absolutely zero difference in quality. So in the end if you need some deer meat it would be much better to take him and leave the 8 point for one more year. You will eliminate feeding a deer that has little chance of improving much and leave a better deer, have more food and some backstraps. Next year the 8 point may improve significantly if he survives and you switch your trough feeder to protein in a few weeks thru summer. The most important time to feed protein is January 15 thru March and till end of summer if you can afford. Good luck.
