Getting fish home

Reply

I'm new to fishing, I understand the best way to keep fish fresh while fishing is keeping em on a stringer. My question is what is the best (freshest) way to get the fish you catch from the boat launch to the house for cooking? I live 30 minutes from where I fish and fish for crappie and smallmouth bass. Thanks for the help.

We ice our fish down.

Just my opinion and may very well be wrong - but I've always believed putting fish on a stringer stresses them and has a negative effect on the quality of the meat. Mine go straight from the hook to the ice.

I will keep my fish in the live well until I have enough to bring home. From there like duck says ice slurry. Cheap igloo island breeze ($15 @ walmart) it keeps stuff cold but lets the ice melt during the day giving you that slurry. The only fish i will keep on a string are bigger catfish thats about all. The ice slurry also helps when you go to filet em too.

Ice them down. If you are catching smallmouth, you are a long way from Louisiana.
