What do I need to register a boat bought from Mississippi?

Reply

Hi,

I probably posted to the wrong place... anyhoo..

My son and I are into fishing and thinking to get a used Jon boat. We found a used one in Mississippi. It is a aluminum boat 14'; with trailer from academy with a 9hp motor. The owner never registered the boat. He has receipts from Academy for boat and trailer (bought 2015 new), and motor receipt from Cabelas (same time). He said a bill of sale is all I need to register the boat in LA. Is that the case? Does the Bill of Sale needs to be notarized or just witnessed will be fine? Do I need the title for the boat? and title for the trailer?

Any other issues I might've missed?

Thanks much!

Will

If my memory is correct, in previous reports on this site people stated it is better to get separate bill of sale for boat and trailer if coming from another state as you will be dealing with LDWF and Ofice of Motor Vehicle. (Separate bill of sale with amount paid for each item = each agency knowing how much tax they can get.) If you go on LDWF website you can read regulations and print out forms if needed.

Great idea! I posted earlier to a wrong forum and got similar idea. Never thought of that.
Much appreciated!
By the way, some said I should pay the tax but one post from several years ago said they actually hated if you go about paying the tax etc. Too much paperwork for them?
