New to the area

Hello everyone new to the area (New Iberia) trying to locate some public land I can take my son out squirrel hunting on. Any help would be great not looking for an exact spot just a general area. Don't got a boat at the moment so that limits me. Anyone looking to get out is welcome to join me.

Man all the places I know u need a boat. Only thing I could recommend is driving up to sherburne or thistlewaite to access by vehicle. Hour drive to both from new Iberia.

I do have a 2 man kayak and a single I went out today after studying the map thought I found a spot I could walk into but right before I get to the state land I hit a sign and gate saying the levee is private property that seems to be my worst enemy I find a spot I think I can launch, load the kayak drive over and I hit a levee I can't go on. what's the deal? Can I walk over the levee or will that get me fined and possible jail time? Just don't know this area don't want to start on the wrong foot. Boat is in the near future.

Most land in Louisiana is private. Best thing is to find a public launch and launch from their. You have vermillion bay right there for decent saltwater fishing. The Avery canal is close to you as well. Lake Fausse pointe is a nice place also. Palmetto island state park has a kayak launch and has pretty good fishing too. It's all close by. I would recommend palmetto for you. Whatever you do, don't get a new Iberia haircut

If you want to explore some,Little Alabama Bayou would be great place to launch a yak but you would need a tandem if you were taking your son, unless he has a yak.I take a pirogue when turkey hunting and paddle quite a ways down Little Alabama and I am hopeful I get selected for the Wild Turkey Lottery(March 26,27)but not a huge deal if I do not get selected as there is non-lottery hunt March 28-30.Look at maps and there are tons of spots to hunt off Little Alabama.I might even take along some ultra-lite spinning equipment for possible sac-au-lait action, should the wiley wild turkeys give me de slip!!

Thanks for the tips everyone went out today with the dog and kayak had a good day chasing tree rats around and I found out my lab retrieves squirrels for me hahaha a year and an half old every time out she impresses me. Had to go get a new hair cut today now I'm blending in. Can you put baw into a sentence for me? Not sure if it's a verb or a noun.
