Area 9 Marsh Buck

Dec. 4 Area 9 Terrebonne Parish First deer hunt in the marsh this year. Had been hunting the swamp deer pretty hard, with out no luck. So got invited to Hunt the Marsh, they said the bucks were hot on the Does. Saw a big doe at 344 yards with A nice 7 point behind her. Watched for a while because the furthest shot I have ever made was 305 yds. So I was not the confident in shooting that far. Well it was less than a hour left to dark, so I talked myself into taking the shot. Held about 3 inches over his back and let him have it. Lost him with the shot and the does was gone as well. Thinking he just ran away, I still went check for blood, good thing he as standing next to a white maker on a bayou. So I drove the mud boat right to the area. He was dead as a door nail, never took one step.

I admire your wisdom on those long shots...why cripple and/or lose tracking let the ego slide !!!...cheers

No ego... I shoot regularly on paper out 300 yds. just not further. I knew my drop on my bullet just never practiced it past 300. It was not just a hell Mary shot. Bullet hit exactly where I want it. That why I have shot 32 deer and have found all of them. If the deer would have been in the middle of the marsh I would have never taking the shot. TO hard to find the exact point where you shot even if he when straight down. This deer was on a bayou bank and had a white maker right next to him. Which if he ran would make tracking the point of impact very easy.

Good job reel. beautiful marsh buck! Great shot also, going to try to get one in the morning. if you shoot one in the middle of open marsh where there are no cira trees or landmarks try bringing a compass with you and get a good bearing to the deer from your stand and walk that compass bearing to the deer. this has worked for me in the open marsh before. Again good job!
